  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of health behavior on oral health of Korean adolescents. Methods: The study subjects were 1,071 adolescents of 13-18 years old from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010-2012. Male students were 54.5% and female students were 45.5%. The study consisted of two groups: 13-15 years old and 16-18 years old groups. Data were analyzed by SAS 9.13 version. Results: Those who ingested alcohol had gingival bleeding in 41.0% and 31.0% in those who did not. Those who did not have regular oral examinations had 38.5% of gingival bleeding while those with regular oral examination had 29.7% of gingival bleeding (p<0.01). Students between 16 to 18 years old without oral care products tended to have more gingival bleeding than those who use auxiliary oral hygiene devices (OR=2.658, 95% CI=1.327-5.324). Conclusions: The oral health management of adolescents is closely related to health behavior. Cessation of alcohol ingestion and smoking is very important to improve the adolescent oral health.

  • For the assessment of changes in the bone architecture of the maxilla and mandible in renal osteodystrophy, 31 chronic renal failure patients who were undergoing hemodialysis therapy were selected. They were evaluated through clinical oral examination, radiographic and biochemical examination. The results were as follows: 1. In 17 cases (54.8%), there were evidences of bony change in jawbone. 2. The most common dental radiographic finding was decreased bone density (14 cases, 45.2%). 3. The second most common dental radiographic finding was total or partial loss of lamina alveolar dura (11 cases, 35.5%). 4. The third most common dental radiographic finding was total or partial loss of inferior canal wall (8 cases, 25.8%). 5 cases showed evidences of bony change only in jawbone, and 5 cases only in hand, and 12 cases in both. 6. Serum creatinine, urea nitrogen and alkaline phosphatase values in hemodialysis group were much higher than in control group. 7. There were statistically significant correlation between bone density and lamina dura, and inferior alveolar canal wall.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between body mass index(BMI) and periodontal disease in Korean adult from the data of the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). Methods: The subjects were 3,309 adults from 25 ro 45 years old in the fifth KNHANES. The subjects were divided into three BMI categories: normal weight 1,549(BMI ${\leq}22.9kg/m^2$), overweight 792(BMI $23.0-25.0kg/m^2$) and obesity 968(BMI ${\geq}25.0kg/m^2$). Periodontal disease was assessed by community periodontal index(CPI) and periodontitis was defined as ${\geq}$ code 3. Results: Increased BMI adults had no significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis than those having normal body weight after adjusting for variables; the odds ratio(OR) was 1.06 in overweight and 1.23 in obesity. BMI and periodontitis had no significant relation to increased age, but the age increase tended to have high odds ratio. Women had a higher OR than men. Conclusions: Through this study, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between the obesity index and periodontitis in the further study.

  • Objectives: Internal exposure to certain heavy metals is thought to be associated with periodontitis. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the relationship between blood levels of heavy metals and periodontitis among the Korean population. Methods: Data from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed. A total of 1,968 adults aged 19 years or above were included. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between blood lead levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury, and periodontitis. Confounders such as sex, age, brushing frequency, smoking, etc. were adjusted. Results: Blood levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury showed a significant relationship with periodontitis in a crude model of logistic regression analysis. However, participants with the highest blood levels of cadmium showed higher risk of periodontitis, than those with lower blood levels of cadmium (OR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.11-2.70) after adjusting for the confounders. Conclusions: High blood levels of cadmium may be associated with periodontitis among the Korean population.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the socioeconomic status and oral health of adults. Methods: Data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018) were analyzed, and 13,199 adults aged 19 years or older were selected as study subjects. Various oral health indicators were used to analyze the effect of socioeconomic status on oral health. Disparities in oral health according to socioeconomic status were analyzed using the complex sample chi-squared test and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: A statistically significant difference was observed between income level, medical aid, and all oral health indicators, which indicated that the lower the income level, the lower the oral health level (p<0.001). Furthermore, all oral health indicators displayed statistically significant differences, with the exception of the prevalence of dental caries and education level. The lower the education level, the lower the oral health level (p<0.001). Therefore, the oral health level of adults presented significant differences according to different socioeconomic status indicators. Conclusions: To prevent oral health inequalities, the government and local governments need to intervene not only in the field of health care but also in the social determinants. Additionally, concerted efforts should be made to eliminate oral health disparities by improving policies and systems.
