ACCELERATED CONSTRUCTION OF URBAN INTERSECTIONS WITH PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT (PCCP)

  • The frequent maintenance required on some asphalt concrete (AC) pavement sections has made reconstruction with Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) a feasible alternative. However, many constructability issues need to be addressed in order to realize the full potential of this alternative. Accelerated paving encompasses three classes of activities: methods to accelerate the rate of strength gain, methods to minimize the construction time, and traffic control strategies to minimize user delay. Three major AC intersections with severe rutting problems were reconstructed with PCCP. The entire reconstruction of each intersection, including demolition of the AC pavement and its replacement with PCCP, took place over a period of three days, starting on Thursday evening and opening the intersection to the traffic on Sunday afternoon. This paper discusses the use of PCCP for accelerated reconstruction of major urban intersections with minimal user and traffic disruption, using innovative construction techniques and traffic management optimization principles and demonstrates that concrete pavements can be constructed efficiently and quickly.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) design has been mandatory in Korea since 2016, and it has been gradually expanding in the industry, with a slow attempt to apply it in remodeling constructions. This is because Korea is facing a situation where many buildings are over 30 years old and require remodeling or reconstruction. The remodeling industry is also a growing market, as it saves construction time and cost compared to reconstruction. BIM is an ideal technology element for a competitive remodeling construction, as remodeling constructions face a complicated construction process from the start, including demolition, maintenance, and reinforcement to save the change process. However, there are still limitations in applying BIM to remodeling constructions, due to considerations of the existing building and the complicated requests of the inhabitants. BIM still has technical and environmental limitations for general use. In this study, I analyzed BIM application cases from existing studies and suggest what improvement points should be strengthened.

Significance and Limitations of Chinese Rural Villages Reconstruction - Focusing on the Critical Study on'Farmers' Upstairs(農民上樓)' Phenomenon - (중국 농촌마을 재편의 의의와 한계 - '농민상루(農民上樓)' 현상에 대한 비판적 고찰을 중심으로 -)

  • The purposes of this study are to explain the background and significance of the 'Farmers' upstairs'(農民上樓) phenomenon which has been currently promoted as part of the "New Socialist Countryside Construction" in contemporary China, and its positive and negative aspects, and analyze the limitations of 'Farmers' upstairs'phenomenon. 'Farmers' upstairs'means the building of concentrated farmhouses by means of reconstruction of scattered farmhouses here and there, simultaneously by installing cultural, social welfare, and environmental facilities where rural farmer also could enjoy the convenience of urban living. It brings, however, the positive effects such as the improvement of living conditions of rural farmers, the simultaneously expanding of urban construction land and agricultural land, and the new influx of population from urban areas, whiles the negative effectives such as the forced demolition of farmhouses by governments or real estate developers with very lower compensation costs for the demolition of farmhouses, the gap from the standard of living, and above all, the inconvenience caused by the living in a multi-stories building in the rural villages. As a result, it is pointed out that the ongoing 'Farmers' upstairs', promoted as a kind of rural movement beyond a phenomenon, has similarities with the Rural Cooperative Movement(農村合作化運動) of Mao Zedong era(1953-61), namely the People's Commune Movement(人民公社運動) finally failed.

  • As the waste concrete is increased by demolition according to the plan of city-reconstruction and preperation of city-environment etc, the production of waste concrete in the country is being very increased every years. Because the use of recycled aggregate is low, the cases of unlawful reclamation and disuse are increased. These occur the social and economic problems. This experimental study is to investigate the fluidity, compressive strength and durability of flowing recycled aggregate concrete using the river sand and recycled coarse aggregate according to the replacement rate of fly-ash and to present the fundamental data for the using of flowing recycled aggregate concrete.

  • With the recent global trends in environmental preservation, the importance of sustainable construction is being highlighted in Korea. In particular, the trend is being discussed about life cycle of the apartment houses in various aspects. However the Korean construction market and housing policy have been increasingly focusing on supplier. Structures become progressively obsolete after a certain period, but their durability can be extended with proper maintenance management. Accordingly, if maintenance management on the structures is made efficiently, waste of construction energy and damage to the environment and economic loss due to early demolition and reconstruction can be effectively prevented.   • Technology based civilization has made a sustained advancement, resulting in economic growth and material prosperity. The outcome was the beginning of environmental destruction. Especially, in regard to construction, it has been recognized as a key culprit for pollution. As such, the construction industry has recently shown interest in the environment, as it has been applying environment friendly method of construction and reducing wastes. As the number of old common housing increases in our country, reconstruction and remodeling are implemented as a means of improvement. However, it can be said that remodeling is the inevitable option because of cost and environmental problems associated with reconstruction. As part of its feature, remodeling work is preceded by removal work. And, removal work inevitably creates construction wastes. Treatment of wastes that takes into consideration environmental aspects is important and for this, removal work that is based on environment friendly remodeling to ensure selective separation must be implemented. Yet, a removal work based on environment friendly remodeling has a lower level of output compared to existing methods. Because remodeling work by its nature has a post construction work which proceeds after it, securing work efficiency is important as the removal work is a critical path activity. Thus, the present study improves the work process of a removal work that is based on environment friendly remodeling so that it becomes a work process that includes work efficiency. For this, as a case study, old common housing has been selected, and a TACT process has been developed which is based on data acquired from environment friendly removal work. And, this study develops an optimal TACT process which is based on environment friendly remodeling by conducting a simulation for a 15 floor apartment.

  • The periodic maintenance of bridges is necessary once they have been constructed and its cost depends on various factors, such as their condition, environmental conditions and so on. To make a decision support system, it is essential to establish a basic reconstruction cost model. In this study, a regression model is suggested for calculating the reconstruction cost for typical cases and influential factors, depending on the type of bridge and its components, by analyzing the basic bridge specifications based on the data of the Bridge Management System (BMS). The details for each case were estimated in consideration of the cost calculation variables. The details for each case were estimated in consideration of the cost calculation variables. The cost model for the new construction of the superstructure, substructure and foundation and the temporary bridge construction and demolition costs were drawn from the regression analysis of the estimation results of typical cases according to the cost calculation variables. The reconstruction costs for different types of bridge were obtained using the cost model and compared with those in the literature. The cost model developed herein is expected to be utilized effectively in maintenance decision making.

  • Among Korea's national folk cultural heritage, eight villages have been designated, and 37 years have passed since Hahoe Village was first designated in 1984. All eight villages have been constantly inhabited by residents from the past to the present, so the cultural value of inferring the lives of our ancestors in the past is very high. However, due to the inconvenience of the settlement environment in existing houses due to changes in the living environment, buildings such as various residential facilities and warehouses have been installed and expanded without permission, losing the original cultural property landscape and building. In addition, complaints and conflicts from residents are accumulating due to the poor living environment in the village. Therefore, this study intends to present guidelines for conservation and maintenance that can embrace changes in resident's housing and living environment, based on the 'maintenance of original form', the grand principle of the Cultural Properties Protection Law about the Jeju Seongeup Village. In particular, the maintenance plan is largely subdivided into legalization, demolition, expansion and reconstruction, and detailed standards for each item and examples applied are proposed. Through this, it aims to become basic data on the starting point of realistic improvement measures for cultural properties and residents to coexist.

  • From an sustainable perspective, one unique characteristic of Open Housing is its ability to individualize variable elements (infill) from the permanent elements (support) in accordance with the residents' needs. Such environment-friendly elements of Open Housing can contribute to increasing the life span of the building, reducing the scope of reconstruction, and minimizing the amount of disposed building materials during demolition. The purpose of this research is to analyze the flexibility concept from a typological perspective, so that the concept of open housing can be better understood and its development can be promoted. The main method of this study was content analysis. Based on literature review of flexibility concept in a typological approach, a primary categories were established to describe the flexibility concept such as time for flexibility, scope, and the degree of openness. Subsequently each criterion was elaborated as follows: planning, supply, and utility in the time stage; internal and external flexibility in its scope; and fixed, semi-free, and free flexibility in its openness degree. This research exposes the lack of comprehensive knowledge of Open Housing caused by rather uniform features of previous studies. This research establishes and promotes a systematic approach for a more holistic meaning of Open Housing. This approach should contribute to the proper utilization and further development of sustainable housing.
