The subjects were 204 elderly who lived in the whole country. The data were collected from Sep. to Dec., 1998, using a 36 items questionnaire and analyzed by SAS program for t-test, ANOVA. Scheffe test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of knowledge about senile dementia was $9.33\pm2.68$(range 0-15), The elderly who was unschooled, lived in Kyung Sang province, didn't have any hobby or interest, didn't access to informations about senile dementia got lower score than the others. 2. The examples of knowledge test items about senile dementia that the subjects above fifty percents answered uncorrectly were 'the patient of senile dementia doesn't die soon', 'senile dementia is uncurable disease', 'the symptoms of senile dementia is apparent in new and strange circumstances', 'the pood and lonely elderly is apt to have senile dementia'. 3. The mean score of attitude about senile dementia was $15.87\pm2.25$(range 0-20) and attitude about senile dementia was relatively positve. Attitude about senile dementia by general characteristic was not significantly different. 4. The examples of attitude test items about senile dementia to which the majority of subjects agreed were 'It is a pity to see the patient suffered from senile dementia', 'It is difficult to take care of senile dementia patient' and so on. 5. The correlation between kowledge and attitude about senile dementia was very low. Therefore this study suggests that it is crucial to educate the elderly and their family to induce positive attitude about senile dementia.

The data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. Results: There were significant interactions between two groups and times in self-efficacy (p=.011), cognitive function (p<.001), depression (p=.005), spiritual well-being (p=.002), and quality of life (p=.037). The integrated dementia managing programme of this study showed significant positive effects on the quality of life for the elderly with mild dementia. • Purpose: This study tries to explore experiences with a special rating dementia service among family caregivers of elderly people with dementia. Methods: The participants were 11 family caregivers of elderly people with dementia and had used a day-care service from the special rating dementia service for more than 3 months. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Results: Three categories emerged: "reminiscence of an entangled life", "feeling relieved from a stifled life", and "hope for a better life through help and support" with 8 sub-categories and 23 codes. By using the special rating dementia service, the participants experienced relief from the burden of caring for their elderly family member with dementia and restored their social relations or family relationships. They experienced a positive transition in which their caring for elderly family members with dementia was integrated into their daily lives, and they expressed their desires for better policies. Conclusion: These findings imply the importance and necessity of the special rating dementia service. Practical and systematic family support programs are necessary and proactive publicity activities by the government and public agencies are suggested to ensure that family caregivers can easily use the special rating dementia system.

  • Objectives: The Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease (QOL-AD) scale is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the quality of life (QOL) in the elderly with dementia. This study aimed to develop the Korean version of Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease (KQOL-AD) scale for the demented elderly living in the community. Methods: KQOL-AD was administered to two groups: 24 demented elderly and 72 cognitively impaired elderly with no dementia (CIND) who were living in the community Each elderly person and their caregiver rated the elderly QOL. The Korean version of mini-mental state examination (MMSE-K), the clinical dementia rating (CDR), the activities of daily living (ADL), and the neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI) were also assessed. The reliability and validity of the KQOL-AD were examined. Results: In the dementia group, the internal consistency (Cronbach's $\alpha$), the split half and the test-retest reliabilities of the KQOL-AD were excellent. Scores on the KQOL-AD were significantly correlated with the scores of the NPI, but they were not significantly correlated with scores of the MMSE-K, CDR and ADL. In addition, the CIND group showed similar results to the dementia group. Conclusions: KQOL-AD might be a reliable and valid instrument for assessing QOL in the elderly with dementia It could be used as an important outcome measure for research on the demented elderly.

  • Background : The conventional electroencephalography(EEG) is commonly used as aid in the diagnosis of dementia. Recently developed quantitative electroencephalography(qEEG) provides data that are not achievable by conventional EEG. The aim of this study was to find out the usefulness of quantified-EEG in dementia. Method : Twenty elderly women(10 normal elderly, 10 demented elderly) were participated in this study. EEG power and coherence was computed over 21 channels; right and left frontal, central, parietal, temporal and occipital areas. Result : The activity of ${\alpha}$ wave was more higher than others significantly at frontal and parietal areas in normal elderly, but the activity of ${\theta}$ wave was higher in demented elderly. And the activity of ${\theta}$ wave in demented elderly women was more higher than normal elderly women significantly. Conclusion : In conclusion, we discovered that quantitative EEG was used to diagnose dementia.

  • The purpose of this study is to objectively examine the effects of integrated art therapy on cognitive function and depression in the early dementia elderly, and to identify and discuss the process of change in the early dementia elderly through a comprehensive analysis through behavior change observation diary. As a research method, a mixed study was designed using in-depth analysis through qualitative studies as well as quantitative studies on the effect of integrated art therapy on cognitive function and depression in the elderly with early dementia. The quantitative study conducted a pre-post examination of 20 elderly people with early dementia using the day care center in P-gu, Suwon, and the qualitative study analyzed the behavioral change observation diary of 10 elderly people with early dementia. These findings show that first, integrated art therapy had a significant effect on the cognitive function of the elderly with early dementia (p<.001, t=-5.871). Second, integrated art therapy had a significant effect on the depression of the elderly with early dementia (p<.001, t=5.325). Third, the integrated art therapy program changed to a positive attitude before and after cognitive function and depression of the elderly with early dementia. By revealing the effect of integrated art therapy on cognitive function and depression of the elderly with early dementia through the results of this study, it is meaningful as basic data for research related to the elderly with early dementia as well as providing effective information on integrated art therapy programs related to the elderly with early dementia.
