Small-Sample Inference in the Errors-in-Variables Model (소표본 errors-in-vairalbes 모형에서의 통계 추론)

  • We consider the semiparametric linear errors-in-variables model: yi=(${\alpha}+{\beta}ui+{\varepsilon}i$, xi=ui+${\varepsilon}i$ i=1, …, n where (xi, yi) stands for an observation vector, (ui) denotes a set of incidental nuisance parameters, (${\alpha}$ , ${\beta}$) is a vector of regression parameters and (${\varepsilon}i$, ${\delta}i$) are mutually uncorrelated measurement errors with zero mean and finite variances but otherwise unknown distributions. On the basis of a simple small-sample low-noise a, pp.oximation, we propose a new method of comparing the mean squared errors(MSE) of the various competing estimators of the true regression parameters ((${\alpha}$ , ${\beta}$). Then we show that a class of estimators including the classical least squares estimator and the maximum likelihood estimator are consistent and first-order efficient within the class of all regular consistent estimators irrespective of type of measurement errors.

  • It has been known that elevated levels of COX-2 is associated with resistance to apoptosis in cancerous or transformed cells. However, recent studies have shown that up-regulation of COX-2 may be implicated in induction of apoptosis. Previous studies from this laboratory have shown that a novel alkylphospholipid type antitumor agent ET-18-O-$CH_3$ (l-O-octadecyl-2-0-methyl-glycero-3-phosphocholine) induces COX-2 expression in H-ras transformed human breast epithelial cells (MCF10A-ras) while it causes apoptosis in the same concentration range.(omitted)

  • Time-series observations were carried out using a 155mm refractor and a $2k{\times}3k$ CCD camera at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. We found 38 new variable stars in the $2.3^{\circ}{\times}2.4^{\circ}$ region around the Cepheid variable TU Cas: 22 eclipsing binary stars, 11 ${\delta}$ Scuti type stars and an RR Lyrae star, and 4 unclassified variables.

  • One hundred forty two digital spectra of 110 standard stars with 1 A resolution in ${\lambda}{\lambda}\;3000\;A\;{\sim}4150\;A$ region were analyzed to determine the spectral indices sensitive to the atmospheric parameters. The standard stars cover the temperature in the range of $T_eff$ from ${\sim}4000^{\circ}$ to ${\sim}7000^{\circ}\;K$ and the surface gravity in the range of log g from 0 to 5 and the metal abundance [Fe/H] from -2.7 to 0.4. We have derived physical parameters, theta(=T/5040), log g, and [Fe/H] for the standard stars using indices, P(38/93), Fe I(A), Fe I(B), SrII, and $H{\delta}$, with overall accuracies of 0.067, 0.617, and 0.466, respectively. However for some region of spectral type and metallicity, those can be obtained with better accuracies. Those indices are found to be useful especially for stellar gravity determination.

  • Solar air heaters (SAHs) are simple in design and widely used for solar energy collection devices, and a packed bed is one of typical solar energy storage systems of thermal energy captured by SAHs. This paper presents mathematical modeling and simulation on the thermal performance of various packed bed energy storage systems. A MATLAB program is used to estimate the thermal efficiency of packed bed SAH. Among the various packed bed energy storage systems considered, the wire mesh screen packed bed SAH shows the best thermal efficiency over the entire range of design conditions. The maximum of thermal efficiency of packed bed SAH with wire mesh screen matrices has been found to be 0.794 for Re=2000 - 20000 and ${\Delta}T/I=0.002-0.02$.

Dielectric Properties and a Equivalent Circuit of ZnO-Based Varistor (ZnO 바리스터의 유전특성과 등기회로)

  • In this study a low-signal equivalent circuit based on the Double Schottky Barrier model is proposed for ZnO-based varistor. Since pin-lead inductance and stray capacitance are considered in pin-lead type ZnO varistor these inductance and capacitance could be removed from the experimental dielectric data of the varistor. According to the equivalent circuit simulation results the higher the varistor-voltage of varistor sample the capacitance of dielectric layer is larger, and the capacitances of semiconducting layer and depletion layer are smaller, while the parallel resistances of semiconducting layer and depletion layer are more larger values. Spectra of the dielectric loss factor $tan{\delta}$ show 2 peaks in low frequency and high frequency regions respectively. The low-frequency peak is due to the relaxation by deep donors and the high-frequency peak is due to the relaxation by shallow donors. Above results are well consistent with the theoretical mechanism of ZnO varistor.

  • The purpose of a fatigue crack arrest desing is to prvent a fatigue fracture of machine and structure resulted from unstable crack growth. In all cases of load transfer to second elements such as stringers, doublers or flangers, crack arrest is possible; arrest occuring when the fatigue crack reaches the second element. In the present work, the possibility of crack arrest and the design criterion of fatigue crack arrest in the variable thickness plates are examined numericaiiy by using fatigue crack arrest thresthod $\Delta$K$_{th}$of SA-508 reactor vessel steel and stress intensity factor which was obtained in the previous work as a result of 3-dimensional finite element analysis for CT type variable thickness plates having discontinuous interface.e.

  • Effect of vortex generator on the heat transfer enhancement of electronic chips is investigated using naphthalene sublimation technique. Experiments are performed for a single chip and chip arrays, and shape of vortex generator, position of vortex generator, stream wise chip spacing and air velocity are varied. Local and average heat transfer coefficients are measured on the top surface of simulated electronic chips, and compared with those obtained without vortex generator. In case of a single chip, heat transfer augmentation is seen only on the upstream portion of chip surface, while heat transfer enhancement is found on the whole surface for chip arrays. Rectangular wing type vortex generator is found to be more effective than delta wing.

Effect of Specimen Thickness on the Statistical Properties of Fatigue Crack Growth Resistance in BS4360 Steel

  • In this paper the effect of specimen thickness on fatigue crack growth with the spatial distribution of material properties is presented. Basically, the material resistance to fatigue crack growth is treated as a spatial stochastic process, which varies randomly on the crack surface. The theoretical autocorrelation functions of fatigue crack growth resistance with specimen thickness are discussed for several correlation lengths. Constant ${\Delta}K$ fatigue crack growth tests were also performed on CT type specimens with three different thicknesses of BS 4360 steel. Applying the proposed stochastic model and statistical analysis procedure, the experimental data were analyzed for different specimen thicknesses for determining the autocorrelation functions and probability distributions of the fatigue crack growth resistance.

3.5kHz seismic images of the gas-charged shallow sediment at Kwangyang Bay and the Yeosu Sound on the southern coast of Korea (광양만과 여수해만의 가스함유 표층퇴적물의 3.5kHz 탄성파 영상)

  • The 3.5kHz sub-bottom profiling was carried out over both Gwangyang Bay and the Yeo Sound . High -resolution digital images of uppermost sediment layers are obtained from the field data which were originally recorded in analog mode. Most prominent feature along the acoustic profiles is the chaotic reflections which imply the presence of shallow gas within the silty sediments. In the western part of Gwangyang Bay, the gas-charged sediments are assoicated with the acoustic turbidity of the blanket type. Across the Seomjin Delta in the eastern part of Gwangyang Bay, the gas-charged seismic facies are observed just beneath the sea bottom. In the western Yeoul Sound , the gassy seiments occur widely , whereas it is rare in the eastern counterpart with the <30-m-deep channel. We postulate that this gas was biogenetically produced within the organic-rich deposits.
