In search and rescue mission, micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) are typically used to capture image and video from an aerial perspective and transfer the data to the ground station. Because of the power limitation, a cluster of MAVs are required for a large search area, hence an ad-hoc wireless network must be maintained to transfer data more conveniently and fast. However, the unstable link and the intermittent connectivity between the MAVs caused by MAVs' movement may challenge the packet forwarding. This paper proposes a delay tolerant packet forwarding algorithm based on location estimation for MAV networks, called DTNest algorithm. In the algorithm, ferrying MAVs are used to transmit data between MAVs and the ground station, and the locations of both searching MAVs and ferrying MAVs are estimated to compute the distances between the MAVs and destination. The MAV that is closest to the destination is selected greedy to forward packet. If a MAV cannot find the next hop MAV using the greedy strategy, the packets will be stored and re-forwarded once again in the next time slot. The experiment results show that the proposed DTNest algorithm outperforms the typical DTNgeo algorithm in terms of packet delivery ratio and average routing hops.

Communication infrastructure supports wide variety of mobile services such as photo and file sharing, location tracking, social network services and instant messaging. However, instances like power-loss and natural disasters disrupt these communication infrastructures unable to render support to these mobile services. Delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) offer a solution to these problems at hand. By utilizing mobility and opportunistic contacts among mobile devices, a plausible communication network can be establish and enable support to mobile applications. This paper presents an energy-efficient, reliable message delivery routing scheme with message prioritization rules for DTN. It uses the context information of nodes (mobile devices) such as the contact history (location and time of contact), speed/velocity, moving direction to determine the best forwarders among nodes in the network. The remaining energy of the nodes is also used to determine the message types a node can deliver successfully. The simulation results show that proposed approach outperforms Epidemic and Prophet routing schemes in terms of delivery ratio, overhead ratio, delivered messages per types and remaining energy.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm that select efficient relay nodes using information of network environment and nodes. The proposed algorithm can be used changeable weight factors as following network environment in node density. The routing protocols adopting store-carry-forward method are used for solving network problems occurred by unstable end-to-end connection in Delay Tolerant Networks(DTNs). Exiting DTN routing algorithms have problems that large latency and overhead because of deficiency of network informations. The proposed algorithm could be provide a solution this problems using changeable weight factor and prediction of network environment. Thus, selected relay nodes work efficiently in unstable and stressed network environment. Simulation results show that enhancement performance as overhead, delivery ratio, average latency compared to exiting DTN routing algorithm.

This paper considers mobility control to improve packet delivery in delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) under group mobility. Based on the group structure in group mobility, we propose two mobility control techniques; group formation enforcement and group purposeful movement. Both techniques can be used to increase the contact opportunities between groups by extending the group's reachability. In addition, they can be easily integrated into some existing DTN routing schemes under group mobility to effectively expedite the packet delivery. This paper is divided into 2 parts. First, we study how our proposed mobility control schemes reduce the packet delivery delay in DTNs by integrating them into one simple routing scheme called group-epidemic routing (G-ER). For each scheme, we analytically derive the cumulative density function of the packet delivery delay to show how it can effectively reduce the packet delivery delay. Then, based on our second proposed technique, the group purposeful movement, we design a new DTN routing scheme, called purposeful movement assisted routing (PMAR), to further reduce the packet delay. Extensive simulations in NS2 have been conducted to show the significant improvement of PMAR over G-ER under different practical network conditions.

DTN flooding based routing protocol replicate the message copy to increase the delivery like hood that overloads the network resources. The probabilistic routing protocols reduce replication cost by forwarding the message to a node that holds high predictability value to meet its destination. However, the network traffic converges to high probable nodes and produce congestion that triggers the drop of previously stored messages. In this paper, we have proposed a routing protocol called as Connection frequency Buffer Aware Routing Protocol (CFBARP) that uses an adaptive method to maintain the information about the available buffer space at the receiver before message transmission. Furthermore, a frequency based method has been employed to determine the connection recurrence among nodes. The proposed strategy has performed well in terms of reducing message drop, message relay while increases the delivery probability.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm that analyzes characteristic nodes to select efficient relay nodes using message distribution. Existing delay-tolerant network (DTN) routing algorithms have problems with large latency and overhead on account of the deficiency of network information in an unsteady network. We must solve this problem, predict future networks using node state information, and apply a weight factor that changes according to the message distribution. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides enhanced performance compared to existing DTN routing algorithms.

This paper describes a novel Context-awareness Markov Chain Prediction (CMCP) algorithm based on movement prediction using Markov chain in Delay Tolerant Network (DTN). The existing prediction models require additional information such as a node's schedule and delivery predictability. However, network reliability is lowered when additional information is unknown. To solve this problem, we propose a CMCP model based on node behaviour movement that can predict the mobility without requiring additional information such as a node's schedule or connectivity between nodes in periodic interval node behavior. The main contribution of this paper is the definition of approximate speed and direction for prediction scheme. The prediction of node movement forwarding path is made by manipulating the transition probability matrix based on Markov chain models including buffer availability and given interval time. We present simulation results indicating that such a scheme can be beneficial effects that increased the delivery ratio and decreased the transmission delay time of predicting movement path of the node in DTN.

The existing prediction algorithms require additional information such as a node's schedule and connectivity between nodes. However, network reliability is lowered when additional information is unknown. To solve this problem, we proposed an algorithm for predicting a movement path of the node by using Markov chain. The proposed algorithm maps speed and direction for a node into state, and predict movement path of the node using transition probability matrix generated by Markov chain. As the result, proposed algorithm show that the proposed algorithms has competitive delivery ratio but with less average latency.

Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is a networking architecture that is designed to solve network problem in unstable and stressed environments using the Store-Carry-Forward method. Different form general networks, DTN does not guarantee the end-to-end connectivity, it is hard for the exiting TCP/IP based protocols to normally work due to the characteristic such as large latency and unstable link connectivity. And the condition that send massage without the information of the destination occurs frequently. Thus, suitable routing protocols for DTN are required and being researched. In this paper, we propose a novel routing protocol for DTN utilizing epidemic and prediction based algorithm to prevent the defect of previously DTN routing protocols such as the absence of the holistic view of the network. Proposed algorithm predicted destination using the mobility information recorded in neighbor node's history and utilize epidemic based algorithm when occurred condition without destination's information. This algorithm is enhanced in terms of delivery ratio, decreases latency and overhead in sparse network such as DTN.

Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant Network (DTN) has been considered as a key technology to overcome main challenges in interplanetary communications such as an intermittent connectivity and high bit error rates. The lack of end-to-end connectivity between source and destination results in long and variable delays and data loss, hence the Internet Protocols cannot operate properly in such environments because it requires an end-to-end connectivity. The DTN, which utilizes 'store-and-forward' message passing scheme between nodes, can overcome the lack of end-to-end connectivity in Interplanetary Network (IPN). In this paper, DTN is applied to 3-hop relay IPN, where messages are transmitted from Earth ground station to Lunar lander through Earth satellite and Lunar orbiter. ONE simulator is used to reflect the real environment of IPN and an efficient resource management method are analyzed to guarantee the message delivery by optimizing a message TTL (Time to Live), buffer size and message fragmentation.
