Degree-Of-Freedom(DOF) for most power transmission system varies according to the operation status which consists of friction elements to change the power flow or to adjust the speed ratio such as clutches, brakes or one-way clutches. To simulate the dynamic characteristics of automatic power transmission system which is a typical example of such a variable DOF systems, many sets of governing equations and complicated phase decision routines are necessary. In this paper dynamic constraint theorem is derived explaining the torque transmission characteristics during the clutch engagement process and a robust stable algorithm is developed describing this phase transition phenomenon effectively by introducing the concept of direct torque and virtual damping. Finally, applying this algorithm to a passenger car automatic transmission gear consisting of several friction elements, an efficient simulation methods for such a complex system will be suggested that is very simple and systematic.
The most important thing in the container terminal is to handle the cargo effectively in a limited time. To achieve this objective, many strategies have been introduced and applied. If we consider the automated container terminal, it is necessary that the cargo handling equipment is equipped with more intelligent control systems. From the middle of the 1990s, an automated rail-mounted gantry crane (RMGC) and rubber-tired gantry crane (RTG) have been developed and widely used to handle containers in the yards. Recently, in these cranes, equipment like CCD cameras and sensors have been mounted to cope with the automated terminal environment. In this paper, we try to support the development of more intelligent automated cranes that make the cargo handling be performed effectively in the yards. For this plant, we ought to consider modeling, tracking control, anti-sway system design, skew motion suppressionand complicated motion control and suppressing problems. In this paper, the system modeling and a tracking control approach are discussed, based on a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) servo-system design. From the simulation results, the good control performance of the designed control system is evaluated.
Thermally induced errors have been significant factors affecting the machine tool accuracy. In this paper, the spindle thermal error has been focused, where the 5 degree of freedom thermal error components are considered. An effective measurement system has been devised for the 5 DOF thermal errors, consisting of gap sensors and thermocouples around the micro-computer interfaced environment. Several thermal error modeling techniques are also implemented for the thermal error prediction: multiple linear regression, neural network and system identification methods, etc. The performance of the thermal error modeling techniques is evaluated and compared, giving the system identification method as the optimum model having the least deviation. The developed system for the thermal error measurement and modeling was practically applied to a CNC machining center, and the spindle thermal errors were effectively compensated around the micro computer-machine tool interfaced networks. The machine tool accuracy was improved about 4-5 times typically.

This paper presents a robust nonlinear controller for a f degree of freedom (DOF) parallel manipulator in the task space coordinates. The proposed control strategy requires information on orientations and translations in the task space unlike the joint space or link space control scheme. Although a 6 DOF sensor may provide such information in a straightforward manner, its cost calls for a more economical alternative. A novel indirect method based on the readily available length information engages as a potential candidate to replace a 6 DOF sensor. The indirect approach generates the necessary information by solving the forward kinematics and subsequently applying alpha-beta-gamma tracker With the 6 DOF signals available, a robust nonlinear task space control (RNTC) scheme is proposed based on the Lyapunov redesign method, whose stability is rigorously proved. The performance of the proposed RNTC with the new estimation scheme is evaluated via experiments. First, the results of the estimator are compared with the rate-gyro signals, which indicates excellent agreement. Then, the RNTC with on-line estimated 6 DOF data is shown to achieve excellent control performance to sinusoidal inputs, which is superior to those of a commonly used proportional-plus-integral-plus-derivative controller with a feedforward friction compensation under joint space coordinates and the nonlinear controller under task space coordinates.
This paper presents the results of prediction of maneuverability of KCS about 4 degree of freedom(DOF) including roll motion. The prediction is carried out by CPMC captive model test. The CPMC(Computerized Planar Motion Carriage) with captive model test equipment including roll moment gage is installed at Ocean Engineering Tank of MOERI. KCS is the container ship open to the world by MOERI. To predict the 4 DOF maneuverability of a ship some tests with roll angle are conducted. And the prediction results of maneuverability by simulation are compared with the results of free running model test. The simulation results agree well with those of free running model tests.
The purpose of this study is to analyze how the human body having more muscles than its degree-of-freedom modulates an effective stiffness using redundant actuation, and to apply this concept to the design and control of advanced machines which requires adaptable spring. To investigate the adaptable stiffness phenomenon due to redundant actuation in the human body, this paper derives a general stiffness model of the Human body. In particular, for a planar 1 DOF human arm model, a planar 2 DOF human arm model, a spherical 3 DOF shoulder model, a 4 DOF human arm model, and a 7 DOF human arm model, the required nonlinear geometry ad the number of required actuator for successful modulation of the effective stiffness are analyzed along with a load distribution method for modulation of the required stiffness of such systems. Secondly, the concept of motion frequency modulation is introduced to show the usefulness of adaptive stiffness modulation. The motion frequency modulation represents a control of stiffness and / or inertia properties of systems. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, simulations are performed for 2 DOF anthropomorphic robot.
The conventional PID controller has been widely employed in industry. However, the PID controller with one degree of freedom(DOF) can not optimize both set-point tracking response and disturbance rejection response at the same time. In order to solve this problem, a few types of 2DOF PID controllers have been suggested. In this paper, a tuning formula for a 2DOF PID controller is presented. The optimal parameter sets of the 2DOF PID controller are determined based on the first-order plus time delay process and a real-coded genetic algorithm(RCGA) such that the ITAE performance criterion is minimized. The tuning rule is then addressed using calculated parameter sets and another RCGA. A set of simulation works are carried out on three processes with time delay to verify the effectiveness of the proposed rule.
Wind tunnel experiments are often performed for the identification of aeroelastic parameters known as flutter derivatives that are necessary for the prediction of flutter instability for flexible structures. Experimental determination of all the eighteen flutter derivatives for a section model facilitates complete understanding of the physical mechanism of flutter. However, work in the field of identifying all the eighteen flutter derivatives using section models with all three degree-of-freedom (DOF) has been limited. In the current paper, all eighteen flutter derivatives for a streamlined bridge deck and an airfoil section model were identified by using a new system identification technique, namely, Iterative Least Squares (ILS) approach. Flutter derivatives of the current bridge and the Tsurumi bridge are compared. Flutter derivatives related to the lateral DOF have been emphasized. Pseudo-steady theory for predicting some of the flutter derivatives is verified by comparing with experimental data. The three-DOF suspension system and the electromagnetic system for providing the initial conditions for free-vibration of the section model are also discussed.
This paper presents inverse kinematics and workspace analysis of a planar three degree-of-freedom (DOF) parallel manipulator. Furthermore, optimization problem of the manipulator is presented. The manipulator adopts PRR (Prismatic-Revolute-Revolute) mechanism and the prismatic actuators are fixed to the base. This leads to a reduction of the inertia of the moving links and hence enables it to move with high speed. The actuators are linear electric motors. First, the mechanism based on the geometry of the manipulator is introduced. Second, a workspace analysis is performed. Finally, design optimization is carried out to have large workspace. The proposed approach can be applied to the design optimization of various three DOF parallel manipulators in order to maximize their workspace. The performance of mechanism is improved and satisfies the requirements of workspace to align micro-components.
In this paper, a 3-DOF(Degree Of Freedom) rigid body model is developed for dynamic analysis of a hydrostatic table. The dynamic coefficients, stiffness and damping constant of each pad are calculated from the mass flow continuity condition. The validity of this model is examined in theoretical and experimental method. The dynamic behavior when mass unbalances and local variations of stiffness and damping of pads present is analyzed for real applications of hydrostatic table. Since the theoretical and experimental results show goof agreement. it can be said that the 3-DOF rigid body model is useful for the dynamic model of the table. The analysis reveals that the pitching motion is the dominant mode of vibration, It also reveals that unbalanced loads can increase amplitude of tilting motion and reduce natural frequencies and damping capacity of the hydrostatic table.
