Studies were processed to confirm the difference of the shiitake productivity according to different spawn shapes(sawdust, plug-shaped and liquid spawns) on middle-temperature type strain. A tendency of fruiting was similar among three treatments, and treatments inoculated with plug-shaped spawn and liquid spawn produced over 50 % of total yield until 2nd flushing period and 80 % of total yield until 4th flushing period. In investigation of deformed fruit-bodies, all of three treatments occurred until 2nd flushing period. However, in rate of deformed fruit-bodies, treatment inoculated with liquid spawn was lower than others. In investigation of yield, the amount produced on treatment inoculated with liquid spawn was 411 g per medium and it was highest among treatments. And the amount of fruit-bodies over 10 g was higher than others. Also, the number of fruit-bodies between sawdust and plug-shaped spawn was different, but each weight of fruit-bodies among three treatments was not different.

A survey was conducted during February-March 2003 to determine the occurrence and population density of plant-parasitic nematodes in strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) fields, cultivated under plastic houses in major strawberry growing regions of Gyeongbuk and Chonbuk provinces, Korea. The survey revealed presence of eleven species of plant-parasitic nematodes viz., Aphelenchoides fragariae, Criconemoides morgensis, Ditylenchus dipsaci, Helicotylenchus dihystera, Hirschmanniella imamuri, Meloidogyne arenaria, M. incognita, Pratylenchus penetrans, Psilenchus hilarulus, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni and Xiphinema sp. Frequency and density of each species were highly variable from field to field and within the field. Plant growth was not uniform in the surveyed fields under plastic houses; stunted growth, chlorotic leaves, small curled or crinkled leaves, deformed buds and flowers and wilted plants with fewer fruits were observed in patches.
The effect of the particle size of perlite and irrigation amount on the growth, root activity and mineral competition of tomato was investigated in a recycling system. The particle sizes used were small (SPP, øl∼2 mm), medium (MPP, ø2∼3 mm), (LPP. ø4∼5 mm). Plant height, fresh weight and dry weight of tomato at the earlier growth stage were good at 3.0 L/day in MPP and LPP, but these were not significantly affected by irrigation amount in MPP, Fruit number, weight and yield increased at 1.5 L/day in SPP and 3.0 L/day at MPP or LPP, Deformed fruits tended to increase at higher irrigation amounts regardless of particle size. Root activity increased with increasing particle size with higher irrigation amount during early stage after transplanting, but remarkably decreased at 3.0 L/day in SPP as compared with the others at 100 days. Mineral contents of plants after harvest were higher at MPP and LPP than SPP, but were highest at 3.0 L/day in LPP. In conclusion, it was regarded that tomato growth in a recycling system was optimal at MPP or LPP with irrigation amount of B.0 L/day.
BACKGROUND: The buds of persimmon trees are susceptible to cold damage, often with the late frost, at the time of budburst. This study was conducted to determine effect of the cold damage on shoot and fruit growth the current season. METHODS AND RESULTS: 'Fuyu' trees, grown in 50-L pots, were placed for 1 h at $-2.2{\pm}0.5$, $-2.6{\pm}0.5$, or $-3.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ within a cold storage, at their budburst on April 5. Some trees under ambient temperature at $10-17^{\circ}C$ served as the control. Cold damage of the buds containing flower buds was 54% at $-2.2^{\circ}C$, and significantly increased to 95% at $-3.0^{\circ}C$. The bud damage included the complete death of all, complete death of main buds only, or the late and deformed shoot growth in the spring. Number of flower buds in early May dramatically decreased as the damage ratio increased. Since the thinning of flower buds in mid-May and fruitlets in early July was done in no or slightly damaged trees, the final number of fruits and yield did not decrease compared with the control when the damage increased by 60% and 70%, respectively. Average fruit weight and skin coloration tended to be better with increasing bud damage. Shoot growth was more vigorous in those trees whose buds were severely damaged by low temperature. CONCLUSION(S): Shoot growth and the yield may depend on the number of flower buds and percent fruit set after the cold damage.
The effect of vertical stratification of perlite by particle size on the growth and yield of tomato In a recycling hydroponics was examined. Vertical stratifications were composed of mixed form of small medium and large size (MP), divided forms of small and large size (smal1/1arge, DP I), and medium and large size (medium/large, DP II). Tomatoes showed higher growth in divided form, specially in DP II than DP I. Deformed fruits had higher occurrence by 17.8% in the mixed form than divided forms, while they were not significantly different between mixed forms. Root activity tended to increase during 20 days to 50 days after transplanting (DAT) in all treatments, but showed highest value at 50 DAT in DP II. After harvest electric conductivity and pH of stratified perlite were slightly higher in upper zone of DP I, but were not different in the other treatments. Mineral contents in the medium after harvest were higher in lower zone than the upper zone in MP and DP II, but vice versa in DP I.
We isolated the Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus(CGMMV) particles from watermelon leaves and designated as CGMMV-HY1 as a watermelon isolate and attempted to characterize the pathogenic isolate responsible for such an epidemic in watermelon and also to monitor dominant viral isolates in greenhouse. The watermelon plants infected with CGMMV generally showed mottle mosaic, mosaic, growth stunting, necrosis and deformed fruit. The reactions of indicator plants to CGMMV-HY1 were the local lesions on Nicotiana tabacum cv. White Burley, Nicotiana tabacum cv. Samsun, and Chenopodium amaranticola, and the mosaic symptoms only on Cucumis sativus, but the CGMMV-HY1 did not infect Nicotiana sylvesytis, Datura stramonium, Chenopodium quinoa, and Petunia hybrida. Purified virus particles were rod-shaped and about 300 nm long. The coat protein (CP) of purified CGMMV-HY1 was single band with molecular weight of about 16.5 kDa which was confirmed by western blot analysis probed with monoclonal antibody of CGMMV-HY1. The genomic and subgenomic RNAs of 6.4 kb and 0.75 kb were revealed by the electrophoresis on 1.2% formaldehydedenatured agarose gel. Viral and complementary CGMMV-specific primer sets were designed for spanning the genome using previously reported CGMMV sequences. A 464bp of CP gene of CGMMV-HY1 was amplified by RT-PCR and cloned into PGEM-T easy vector. The nucleotide sequence of CP gene of CGMMV-HY1 shared 98%, 99%, and 100% identities with that of CGMMV strains W, KOM, and KW respectively. Based on these results, we identified CGMMV-HY1 as a CGMMV isolate of watermelon, a member of Tobamovirus.
Attempts were made to investigate the physiological and genetic changes when two different shiitake (Lentinula edodes) strains are mixed. Mycelial growth of KFRI 180 strain and KFRI 1 strain were investigated 82 mm and 80 mm, respectively. Concerning the weight loss percentage of medium, KFRI 1 strain decreased 2.4% and KFRI 180 strain 1.6%. Plug-shaped spawn had no-problem to incubate and there were no differences among the ratios of mixture. Also, conditions of plug-shaped spawns were similar, When the isolated mycelia from plugshaped spawns was incubated again, KFRI 1 50%-KFRI 180 50% showed decreased growth of mycelia compared with other treatments. The same results were obtained from test tubes filled with sawdust. When surface of spawn bottles were observed, KFRI 1 50%-KFRI 180 50% showed spots, but other treatments were not different from KFRI 1 and KFRI 180. Test was made to confirm the strains by confrontation culture. The mixture of two strains was proved to be KFRI 1 regardless the ratios of mixture. However, by the RAPD primer analysis, when KFRI 1 was mixed with KFRI 180, KFRI 180 was stronger. Thus, the confrontation line on PDA was different from the bands analysis by primers. Attempts were made whether the fruit-bodies were made at the generating condition of spawn bottles. The results were that KFRI 1 100%, KFRI 1 90%-KFRI 180 10%, KFRI 1 80%-KFRI 180 20%, KFRI 1 50%-KFRI 180 50% treatment showed fruit-body formation. The shape of fruit-body was deformed, but the gill was made normally.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the optimal media for 'Pechika' ever-bearing strawberry grown in hydroponic culture system in summer highland. Three mixed media (1:1, v/v) of peatmoss with perlite, rice hull, and granular rockwool, and four solution strengths of EC 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and $1.25 dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ were tested. Root zone temperature in peatmoss+perlite media was 1 to $3^{\circ}C$ lower than in the other media. The culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was most effective in producing good yield and fruit quality. The culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was the highest about 1,632kg/10a to yield yearly average, but was very undulating 732 kg/10a to yield in 2004 year and 3,013kg/10a in 2003 year. The deformed fruits were increased when the solution strength was increased, especially in EC $1.25dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The soluble solids and the acidity content of fruits were increased with higher solution strength regardless of media. The uptake of Ca and Mg was inhibited at higher solution strength, and the uptake of N, P and K was promoted. Therefore, the culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was the most suitable culture medium to product strawberry in summer, because it had the highest yield even though fruit quality among treatments was not significant.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the hydroponic culture possibility and the optimal solution strength of 'Pechika' ever-bearing strawberry in summer highland. Maximum room temperature and minimum root zone temperature of plastic house were $30.8^{\circ}C\;and\;19^{\circ}C$ in highland respectively and $4^{\circ}C\;and\;3^{\circ}C$ lower than in level and. The growth of 'Pechika' was better in highland. There was effective in producing the good yield and fruit quality in highland and the deformed fruits also were decreased. The soluble solid and titratable acidity content increased in highland. Early growth was the most effective in standard solution $(EC\;0.75dS\;m^{-1})$ and had a tendency to be inhibition with increasing nutrient concentration. Standard solution was also the highest to yield about 2,064kg/10a among treatments, and 2/3S, 4/3S, 5/3S by turns. The browning roots and root activity increased when the solution strength was increased, especially in EC $1.25dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The soluble solids and acidity content of fruits were increased with higher solution strength. Therefor, the summer hydroponic culture of 'Pechika' ever-bearing strawberry was suitable in highland and effective in standard solution $(EC\;0.75dS{\cdot}m^{-1})$ in solution control.
