  • Isolation technology has been proven effective in reducing the seismic response of superstructures, where most of the deformation is concentrated in the isolation layer. However, in cases of earthquakes with intensities surpassing the fortification level of the area, or severe near-fault earthquakes, the isolation layer may experience excessive deformation, resulting in damage to the isolation bearings or collisions with the retaining wall or surrounding buildings. In this study, a finite element model using ABAQUS is established and compared with experimental test results to deeply investigate the influence of limit devices on the isolation layer and its response to the superstructure. The findings reveal that a larger limiter stiffness and a smaller reserved gap can achieve a more effective limiting effect. Nevertheless, a smaller reserved gap and a larger limiter stiffness may result in increased response of the superstructure. Therefore, rational selection of the reserved gap and limiter stiffness is crucial to reduce the acceleration response.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) is a common method for measuring out-of-plane deformation and in-plane deformation and applied for vibration analysis and strain/stress analysis. However, ESPI is sensitive to environmental disturbance, which provide the limitation of industrial application. On the other hand, Shearography based on shearing interferometer which is insensitive to vibration disturbance can directly measure the first derivative of out-of-plane deformation. In this paper a technique that extract out-of-plane deformation from results of shearography by numerical processing is proposed and measurement results of ESPI and Shearoraphy are compared quantitatively.

  • In this work, some inaccuracies and limitation of prior indentation theory, which is based on the deformation theory of plasticity and experimental observations, are first investigated. Then effects of major material properties on the configuration of indentation load-deflection curve are examined via incremental plasticity theory based finite element analyses. It is confirmed that subindenter deformation and stress-strain distribution from the deformation theory of plasticity are quite dissimilar to those from incremental theory of plasticity. We finally suggest the optimal data acquisition location, where the strain gradient is the least and the effect of friction is negligible. This data acquisition point increases the strain range by a factor of five.

  • For a fill dam, when a long time has passed since its completion, it is very hard to judge its safety and to maintain effectively it due to limitation and restriction in data showing safety status. Conventional method based on a specific point data by surface settlement gauge is commonly used to define deformation characteristic of dam. However, point data-based deformation analysis cannot provide deformation data of the entire dam. In this study a state-of-the-art terrestrial laser scanning technology is introduced to analyze the entire deformation of dam. As a result, it is known that 3D scanning technique can also be effectively used in evaluating dam safety and then establishing adequate maintain plan.

  • The ASCE formula of lifeline.soil interaction force is the basis of semi-analytical relationship for buried pipelines subjected to longitudinal permanent ground deformation due to seismic induced liquefaction. However, since the ASCE formula has been developed based on the stiffness of non-liquefied region, it is needed to modify for the varied stiffness of liquefied region. With this object, the consideration of decreasing effect of soil stiffness in liquefied region is made: i.e. the spatial distributions of pipeline-soil interaction force in liquefied region. It means that the improved formula can reflect various patterns of permanent ground deformation more realistically. Through the comparative analyses using both the improved and ASCE formula, the applicability of the improved and the limitation of the ASCE formula and semi-analytical relationship are discussed. Also, relative influences of various parameters are evaluated for the clarification of behavior of pipeline subjected to longitudinal permanent ground deformation due to liquefaction.

  • High speed railway bridge is affected on safety of bridge by dynamic amplification effect, when dynamic response of bridge is equal to effect cycle load for rolling stock axle according to high speed operation train. And excessive deformation of structure has negative effect on operation safety of train and comfort of passenger due to fluctuation of wheel load by torsion of track etc. and decrease of contact force on vehicle wheel-rail. To ensure the safety of track and train operation safety, it is have to perform the study on resonance and deformation of structure. That criteria and requirement of railway bridge is limitation of vertical acceleration on deck for dynamic behavior of structure, contact of vehicle wheel and rail, limitation of face distortion and rotation angle of end deck, and limitation of vertical displacement by train. Unlike KYEONGBU High Speed Railway, New constructed HONAM High Speed Railway have to applied the new requirement for dynamic behavior safety according to change of condition which is type of ballast (slab ballast), interval of track, and actual rolling stock load. Therefore, in this paper, it was conformed the dynamic characteristic due to parameter, which related with above mentioned criteria, for steel composite bridges.

  • In recent studies, the creep rate of Zircaloy-4, one of the basic property parameters of the nuclear fuel code, has been commonly used with the axial creep model proposed by Rosinger et al. However, in order to calculate the circumferential deformation of the fuel cladding, there is a limitation that a difference occurs depending on the anisotropic coefficients used in deriving the circumferential creep equation by using the axial creep equation. Therefore, in this study, the existing axial creep law and the derived circumferential creep results were analyzed through a circumferential creep test by the internal pressurization method in the isothermal conditions. The circumferential creep deformation was measured through the optical image analysis method, and the results of the experiment were investigated through constructed IDECA (In-situ DEformation Calculation Algorithm based on creep) code. First, preliminary tests were performed in the isotropic β-phase. Subsequently in the anisotropic α-phase, the correlations obtained from a series of circumferential creep tests were compared with the axial creep equation, and optimized anisotropic coefficients were proposed based on the performed circumferential creep results. Finally, the IDECA prediction results using optimized anisotropic coefficients based on creep tests were validated through tube burst tests in transient conditions.

  • In this paper, we introduce an intelligent robotic arc welding system which exploits sensors like as LVS (Laser Vision Sensor), Hall effect sensor, voltmeter and so on. The use of industrial robot is saturated because of its own limitation, and one of the major limitations is that industrial robot cannot recognize the environment. Lately, sensor-based environmental awareness research of the industrial robot is performed actively to overcome such limitation, and it can expand application field and improve productivity. We classify the sensor-based intelligent arc welding robot system by the goal and the sensing data. The goals can be categorized into detection of a welding start point, tracking of a welding line and correction of a torch deformation. The Sensing data can be categorized into welding data (i.e. current, voltage and short circuit detection) and displacement data (i.e. distance, position). This paper covers not only the explanation of the each category but also its advantage and limitation.
