To design ship channel is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. Bends in channel should be avoided if possible, but the channel should be widened, if channel bend is unavoided, to account widened path of a ship in bend for the safe passage of a ship. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to determine ship channel width in bend and channel-bend geometry. The result of this study shows that the width of a channel in bend may be designed as wide as the width in straight lane provided the angle of deflection is less than 30 degree, should be widened for 60degree deflection based on the length of the largest ship using the channel and the angle of deflection.
To design ship channels is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. Bends in channels should be avoided if possible, but the channel should be widened, if channel bend is unavoidable, considering the swept path of a ship for safe passage. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to determine the channel widths in bends. The result of this study shows that the width of the bend may be designed as nearly same size of that in straight channel in case that the angle of deflection is less than 30 degrees, and that of the bend with 60 degrees deflection should be widened based on the length of the largest ship using the channel and the angle of deflection.
Many novel materials exhibit a property of different elastic moduli in tension and compression. One such material is graphene, a wonder material, which has the highest strength yet measured. Investigations on buckling problems for structures with different moduli are scarce. To address this new problem, firstly, the nondimensional expression of the relation between offset of neutral axis and deflection curve is derived based on the phased integration method, and then using the energy method, load-deflection relation of the rod is determined; Secondly, based on the improved constitutive model for different moduli, large deformation finite element formulations are developed and combined with the arc-length method, finite element iterative program for rods with different moduli is established to obtain buckling critical loads; Thirdly, material mechanical properties tests of graphite, which is the raw material of graphene, are performed to measure the tensile and compressive elastic moduli, moreover, buckling tests are also conducted to investigate the buckling behavior of this kind of graphite rod. By comparing the calculation results of the energy method and finite element method with those of laboratory tests, the analytical model and finite element numerical model are demonstrated to be accurate and reliable. The results show that it may lead to unsafe results if the classic theory was still adopted to determine the buckling loads of those rods composed of a material having different moduli. The proposed models could provide a novel approach for further investigation of non-linear mechanical behavior for other structures with different moduli.
This paper shows the results of model tests on the lateral behavior of single rigid pile, which was constructed by driving, in homogeneous and non-homogeneous (two layered) NakDong River sands. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effect of ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length, relative density of sand and pile construction conditions (Driven & Embedded piles) on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. As a model result, the lateral behavior depends upon the pile construction condition in loose-density soil more than in high-density soil. If the pile construction depends upon driving construction, the decrease of deflection remarkably increases for both loose homogeneous sand and non-homogeneous soil$(E_{h1}/E_{h2}/=0.18)$ with high thickness of upper layer but the decrease of maximum bending moment shows the opposite result to the decrease of deflection. And, with respect to deflection, it was found that the deflection ratio $(y_{Driven}y_{Embedded})$ of embedded to driven piles has the ranges of 0.65 - 0.88 $(D_r=90%)$0.38 - 0.65 $(D_r=61.8%)$ for each relative density of homogeneous soil and the range of 0.6 - 0.88 for non-homogeneous soil. Also, in this study, the experimental equation for the effects of drop height (DH) and H/L on the ratios of $y_D/y_E\; and MBM_D/MBM_ E$ is suggested from model tests.
This research presents a nonlinear model to analyze the ball bearing nitration due to the waviness in a rigid rotor supported by multi-row ball bearings. The waviness of a ball and each races is modeled by the superposition of sinusoidal function, and the position vectors of inner and outer groove radius center are defined with respect to the mass center of the rotor in order to consider five degrees of freedom of a general rotor-bearing system. The waviness of a ball bearing is introduced to these position vectors to use the Hertzian contact theory in order to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force resulting from the waviness while the rotor has translational and angular motion. They can be determined by solving the nonlinear equations of motion with five degrees of freedom by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm. Numerical results of this research are validated with those of prior researchers. The proposed model can calculate the translational displacement as well as the angular displacement of the rotor supported by the multi-row ball bearings with waviness. It also characterizes the nitration frequencies resulting from the various kinds of waviness in rolling elements, the harmonic frequencies resulting from the nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of ball bearing. and the sideband frequencies resulting from the waviness interaction.

Recently, to improve performance and strength of circular steel columns, application of concrete-filled steel tube(CFT) type are gradually increased. To accurately predict the plastic design of concrete-filled steel tube columns, a plasticity model is required which can be describe large deformation behavior of concretes and steels. In this study, elastic-plastic large deformation analysis is developed by using the plasticity model of structural steels, and accurate and validity of the developed program is verified by comparing between the experiment and the analysis for concrete-filled steel tube column. In concrete-filled steel tube columns, influence of initial deflection on ultimate strength behavior is investigated by using developed program.
On mesoscopic level, concrete can be treated as a three-phase composite material consisting of mortar, aggregates and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between mortar and aggregate. A lot of research has confirmed that ITZ plays a crucial role in the mechanical fracture process of concrete. The aim of the present study is to propose a numerical method on mesoscale to analyze the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under mechanical loading, and then it will help precisely predict the damage or the cracking initiation and propagation of concrete. Concrete is meshed by means of the Rigid Body Spring Model (RBSM) concept, while the reinforcing steel bars are modeled as beam-type elements. Two kinds of RC members, i.e. subjected to uniaxial tension and beams under bending, the fracture process of concrete and the distribution of cracks, as well as the load-deflection relationships are investigated and compared with the available test results. It is found that the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental observations, indicating that the model can successfully simulate the failure process of the RC members.
The minimum thickness of long-span deck slab is proposed by checking the limit state according to the Korean highway bridge design code(limit state design). Both minimizing thickness and ensuring safety of deck slab are important design factors to increase a competitive price of the long span deck slabs. The required thicknesses for satisfying flexural capacity, preventing punching shear failure and limiting deflection were calculated by considering KL-510 load model which has increased total load compared to DB 24 from 432 kN to 510 kN. The results of the required thickness for various limit states were compared to propose the minimum thickness as a function of span length of deck slabs. The proposed minimum thickness is influenced by satisfying flexural capacity and limiting deflection. It turns out to be similar compared to the results of the previous study by ultimate strength design method even if the live load model was increased in total weights.

In this study a methodology to evaluate fatigue life of the electronic parts for the fighter radar unit under random vibration loading is presented. To do this, one parameter for the 3-σ RMS quation of Steinberg fatigue model is modified to come up with a printed circuit board(PCB) with multiple electronic parts, while fundamental frequency and dynamic deflection of the PCB are calculated from a MATLAB based finite element computer code. For the RIFA structure selected in this study, the 3-σ RMS fatigue limit displacement is reduced to 0.741 times as much as the Steinberg model. This investigation allows to assess the life of multiple electronic parts mounted on the PCB with reinforced metal cover/body showing non-sinusoidal deflection patterns.

Wind tunnel test for Forward-Swept wing airplane model, a part of the Korea-Russia technical cooperation program has been conducted at both TsAGI T-102 and KARI LSWT. The results of TsAGI T-102, obtained by using a unique wire-suspension model support system, and KARI LSWT, used tripod and tandem strut arrangement configuration, are compared with various model conditions including control surface deflection such as flap, aileron, elevator and rudder. Good agreement in the value of drag-polar is observed between TsAGI T-102 and KARI LSWT data. The lateral and directional stability coefficients with rudder and aileron deflection represent a good agreement in both facility.
