  • DGA(Dissolved Gas Analysis) is regularly performed to detect internal defects of power transformers and prevent failures. The overheating or discharging in the transformer can be confirmed by DGA but the defective parts should be identified by internal inspection. However, winding or iron core defects cannot be checked by internal inspection, so it is impossible to establish actions by DGA alone. In this paper, the internal defect mode is analyzed and presented based on the transformer internal inspection reports, and the internal defect can be predicted by considering DGA.

  • Partial discharge(PD) test for simulated insulation defects of used hydro generator stator winding was conducted to analyze the PD Parameters. Simulated insulation defects are classified by 5 types corona, slot, internal, multi and aging defect. Phase resolved partial discharge, statistical parameter (skewness, kurtosis), PD magnitude as a function of the test voltage(Q-V curve) and PD magnitude change under test voltage for 2 minutes are used as PD parameters. The analysis of PD parameters by 4 types are proved to be useful methods. In particular, PD parameter characteristics of aging defect could help to assess the aging condition of stator winding because aging defect has more weak insulation strength than other insulation defects : PD distribution is wide and flat, PD rises rapidly near $0^{\circ}\;and\;180^{\circ}$ and Q-V curve rises sharply and then gently drops.

  • A study on optimal shape selection of a mechanical fastening for the repair of crack defect of ROK Air Force F-5 fighter wing was conducted. The crack defect occurred in the spar of the wing, and the technical manual does not specify the repair method. However, ROK Air Force decided to develop a repair technology for this defect in consideration of various logistic conditions. Three repair shapes for the proper repair were devised and the finite element analysis was performed to examine the structural safety of these three connection members. As a result of the structural safety review, two connection members except one were structurally safe with safety margins over zero because the calculated stress values were at or below the yield strength level. Therefore, two connection members were determined to be able to use for repair under the condition that the aircraft operated within the design limit load. The results of this study would be very useful if the same defect occurs in long-term aircraft operated by the ROK Air Force.

  • Based on the Internet of Things, a web system that can check the condition around the fire extinguisher, whether a fire has occurred, and an application that can receive fire notifications in real time is implemented. Minimize errors that occur during development by using software engineering to clarify the goals of the system and define the structure in detail. In addition, for IoT-based fire extinguishers, a method of reducing defects by finding product defects in the demand analysis, design, and implementation stages and analyzing the cause thereof is proposed. Through the proposed research, it is possible to secure the reliability of defect management for IoT-based smart fire extinguisher.

  • Although it is widely accepted that a fire can occur due to electrical causes even when an engine stops, there is little introduction of detailed case analysis. This study analyzed a fire case caused by an electrical cause during engine stopping at parking lot in detail. Moreover, it was revealed that the fire was mainly caused by design defect.

  • The important point of MPI is the analysis of leakage field in the defective regions. The analysis of leakage field depends on many factors such like geometry and character of defect. In general the calculation of magnetic leakage fields arising from such defects presents an extremely complicated mathematical problem and is practically insoluable, since the inhomogeneities have complex geometrical shapes and may differ in physical nature. Therefore, this paper describes Hall probe measurements of residual leakage field around artificial flaws in alloy steel bar, and shows how the results to recent developments in 2D dipole and analytic models of the magnetic field defect interaction.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop defect assessment technology for integrity evaluation of CANDU pressure tubes. In fracture mechanics analysis, three-dimensional and two-dimensional (line-spring model) finite element analyses were performed to obtain the stress intensity factor for axial and circumferential surface cracks. In leak before break (LBB) analysis, heat transfer analyses for through-wall cracks were performed by considering the cooling effect and the LBB application time was computed. It was shown that the analytical results obtained in this study provide less-conservative but accurate solution for defect assessment of CANDU pressure tubes.

  • Ultrasonic infrared thermography is an active thermography methods. In this method, mechanical energy is introduced to a structure, it is converted into heat energy at the defects, and an infrared camera detects the heat for inspection. The heat generation mechanisms are dependent on many factors such as structure characteristics, defect type, excitation method and contact condition, which make it difficult to predict heat distribution in ultrasonic infrared thermography. In this paper, a method to simulate frictional heating, known to be one of the main heat generation mechanisms at the closed defects in metal structures, is proposed for ultrasonic infrared thermography. This method uses linear vibration analysis results without considering the contact boundary condition at the defect so that it is intuitive and simple to implement. Its advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. The simulation results show good agreement with the modal analysis and experiment result.

  • A series of 132 consecutive cases of secundum type atrial septal defect operated from 1963 to 1980 in the department of Thoracic Surgery of Seoul National University Hospital is analysed. The ages of the patients ranged from 12 months to 57 years and the ratio of men to women was 1 to 1.4. Clinical analysis revealed 33 patients [26%] were asymptomatic and 15 patients [12%]had congestive heart failure. Hemodynamic analysis revealed that severe pulmonary hypertension which is the most serious risk factor is ASD developed in 10 patients [9%] and pulmonary artery pressure significantly increased after the age of 20 years. There were 10 patients with sinus venosus defect and 7 patients with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. The operative mortality was 2.2%.

  • In practice, there may be various defects in an insulating system, so that the PD signals can be produced from these defects simultaneously. Regarding these situations, we have to discriminate the type of defect as well as determine whether the PD occurs or not. In this paper, some analysis results of the PD signals from multi-defects insulating system were presented. We measure the PD signals by using three kind of electrode system, IEC(b), Needle-Plane and mixed electrodes. To simulate multi-defect systems, we combined to electrode systems and apply test voltage simultaneously. Neural network, statistical analysis methods were tried, and the possibilities and limitations of each method were clarified.
