  • To reduce the complexity of video transcoder, transcoding techniques generally use intermediate data such as macroblock types, motion vectors, DCT coefficients, which are extracted from incoming video bitstream. In this Paper, we Propose a new adaptive INTRA update scheme utilizing the importance of each macroblock in a given frame. The importance measure is calculated from the motion vectors which are extracted from the decoding procedure of a incomming video data.'rho ratio of the macroblock to be referred by the next frame is calculated by the motion vectors of the next frame and the macroblocks to be refered higher ratio has more effect on the next frame and the followed frames. The proposed scheme can obtain transcoded bitstreams which has better image quality and more improved resilience against transmission errors.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive error concealment technique for compressed video. Since redundancy is extracted out during compression process, compressed video is vulnerable to errors which occur during transmission of video over error prone networks such as wireless channels and Internet. Error concealment is a process of reconstructing video out of damaged video bit stream. We proved that scalable encoding is very useful for error concealment. Analysis of experiments shows that some part of image is better concealed by using base layer information and other part of image is better concealed by using previous frame information. We developed a technique which enables to decide which methodology is more effective, adaptively, based on motion vectors and regional spatial activity. We used H.263v2 for scalable encoding, but, our approach could be applied to all DCT based video codec.

  • Video compression exploits statistical, spatial, and temporal redundancy, as well as transform and quantization. In particular, the transform in a frequency domain plays a major role in energy compaction of spatial domain data into frequency domain data. The high efficient video coding standard uses the type-II discrete cosine transform (DCT-II) and type-VII discrete sine transform (DST-VII) to improve the coding efficiency of residual data. However, the DST-VII is applied only to the Intra $4{\times}4$ residual block because it yields relatively small gains in the larger block than in the $4{\times}4$ block. In this study, after rearranging the data of the residual block, we apply the DST-VII to the inter-residual block to achieve coding gain. The rearrangement of the residual block data is similar to the arrangement of the basis vector with a the lowest frequency component of the DST-VII. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the luma-chroma (Cb+Cr) BD rates by approximately 0.23% to 0.22%, 0.44% to 0.58%, and 0.46% to 0.65% for the random access, low delay B, and low delay P configurations, respectively.

  • Various models incorporating Human Visual System (HVS) with the Hadamard transform (HT) represented by Walsh functions are considered. Using the exact frequency components of HT basis functions, the optimum modulation transfer function (MTF) which has a higher peak frequency than DCT schemes is obtimum modulation transfer function (MTF) which has a higher peak frequency than DCT schemes is obtained analytically and visually. The main criterion, for error measurement, is errors at the block boundaries which is an important factor in transform coding. The scheme which has no inverse HVS is proposed. It causes some degradation of image data but it is insignigicant. Crossing area of 4 blocks is equalized by the HVS weighting coefficients. The HVS weighted coding results in perceptually higher quality images compared with the unweighted scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a new watermarking method using isolation of invalid blocks for image authentication. We embed messages into the high frequency band in the DCT domain because of its imperceptibility and fragility. And we were able to inspect the identity of valid blocks between error corrected original images and watermarked images through experiments. As a result, we found that the watermarked image is enough to extract binary messages. Therefore, the extra information such as the original image or watermark was not necessary in our extracting process. Experiment results show that the proposed method can be used successfully for image authentication.

  • Images play the most important role in human perception. In order to send the image information by the digital type, the compression is essential. Recently, a lot of studies on encoding algorithms for image by wavelet transform are going on. In this paper, a quadtree-based method of image compression applied to the images decomposed by wavelet transform by using the correlations between pixels and '0' data grouping is proposed. For the proposed method, the experimental gray image with $256{\times}256$ size and 8[bit], is used. And, the performance of proposed method is evaluated to compare with DCT compression method.

  • Purpose: 4DCT scans performed for radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed to assess the possible benefits of respiratory gating in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and established the predictive factors for identifying patients who could benefit from this approach. Materials and Methods: Three treatment planning was performed for 15 patients with stage I~III NSCLC using different planning target volumes (PTVs) as follows: 1) PTVroutine, derived from the addition of conventional uniform margins to gross tumor volume (GTV) of a single bin, 2) PTVall phases (patient-specific PTV), derived from the composite GTV of all 6 bins of the 4DCT, and 3) PTVgating, derived from the composite GTV of 3 consecutive bins at end-exhalation. Results: The reductions in PTV were 43.2% and 9.5%, respectively, for the PTVall phases vs. PTVroutine and PTVgating vs. PTVall phases. Compared to PTVroutine, the use of PTVall phases and PTVgating reduced the mean lung dose (MLD) by 18.1% and 21.6%, and $V_{20}$ by 18.2% and 22.0%, respectively. Significant correlations were seen between certain predictive factors selected from the tumor mobility and volume analysis, such as the 3D mobility vector, the reduction in 3D mobility and PTV with gating, and the ratio of GTV overlap between 2 extreme bins and additional reductions in both MLD and $V_{20}$ with gating. Conclusion: The additional benefits with gating compared to the use of patient-specific PTV were modest; however, there were distinct correlations and differences according to the predictive factors. Therefore, these predictive factors might be useful for identifying patients who could benefit from respiratory-gated radiotherapy.

  • This paper proposes a adaptive video watermarking algorithm according to bitrate and motion vector size in MPEG2 system. The watermark strength in the I-frames is adapted for quantization step size and the strength in the P-B-frames is adapted for quantization step size and motion vector of macroblock to make the watermark more robust against the accompanying degradation due to aggressively compression. A realtime watermark extraction is done directly in the DCT domain during MPEG decoding without full decoding of MPEG video. The experimental simulations show that the video quality results almost invisible difference between the watermarked frames and the original frames and the watermark is resistant to frame dropping, MPEG compression, GoP conversion and low pass filter attacks.

  • The transcoding is needed to modify the bit rate of the video bitstream in accordance with the bandwidth of a variety of channels in order to provide users with a realtime multimedia service and more stable and credible VOD(Video On Demand) service on various wire/wireless network. This paper suggests how to guarantee the video quality in the transcoding process, taking the activity and direction of the macroblock into consideration, thereby reducing the calculation. The threshold of the macroblock's activity and direction is applicable to the different videos, with the DCT coefficients from the intermediate data in the decoding process. Moreover, the suggested video transcoding algorism enables us to maintain the proper video quality and reduce the calculation through the video bit rate change experiment in H.263 environment.
