Business intelligence has been attracting much attention these days. Despite such popularity of BI systems, it is widely known that about a half of BI system projects have failed. To grasp why many BI projects end in failure and what factors would make BI projects less failure-prone, a number of BI studies were made to produce a variety of CSFs. However, there is a paucity of information on whether these CSFs are distinctive from those of typical information systems. By identifying how BI CSFs differ from CSFs of typical information systems, we would be able to explain why most BI projects are more likely to be failure. It is believed that a corrective measure about CSFs will lead to more success in future BI projects. In addition, though there have been a number of similar types of BI systems such as decision support systems and executive information systems in existence, there was no study to determine whether there is ever a discrimination between CSFs of BI systems and the similarly-titled systems. This study is to answer these questions using a literature review analysis. The findings of our study are expected to be helpful in a successful implementation of BI systems.
One-dimensional time-series data have been studied in various database applications such as data mining and data warehousing. However, in the current complex business environment, multidimensional data sequences (MDS') become increasingly important in addition to one-dimensional time-series data. For example, a video stream can be modeled as an MDS in the multidimensional space with respect to color and texture attributes. In this paper, we propose the effective similarity measures on which the similar pattern retrieval is based. An MDS is partitioned into segments, each of which is represented by various geometric and semantic features. The similarity measures are defined on the basis of these segments. Using the measures, irrelevant segments are pruned from a database with respect to a given query. Both data sequences and query sequences are partitioned into segments, and the query processing is based upon the comparison of the features between data and query segments, instead of scanning all data elements of entire sequences.
Big Data is gathering all the attention from every business community. Pervasive use of machine-to-machine (M2M) applications and mobile devices bring an explosion of data. By analyzing this data, the private and public sectors can benefit in the areas of cost reduction and productivity. The Korean government is actively pursuing Big Data initiatives to promote its usage. This paper aims to select industries which fit for the development of Big Data with a verification of the experts. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to systematically derive the opinion of more than 50 professionals. Medical / welfare, transportation / warehousing, information and communications / information security, energy, the financial sector have been identified as promising industries. The results can be utilized in developing Big Data best practices thus contributing industrial development.
The major reason that spatial data warehousing has attracted a great deal of attention in business GIS in recent years is due to the wide availability of huge amount of spatial data and the imminent need for fuming such data into useful geographic information. Therefore, this research has been focused on designing and implementing the pilot tested system for spatial decision making. The purpose of the system is to predict targeted marketing area by discriminating the customers by using both transaction quantity and the number of customer using credit card in department store. Moreover, the pilot tested system of this research provides OLAP tools for interactive analysis of multidimensional data of geographically various granularities, which facilitate effective spatial data mining. focused on the analysis methodology, the case study is aiming to use GIS and clustering for knowledge discovery. Especially, the importance of this study is in the use of snowflake schema model capabilities for GIS framework.
In many scientific and commercial applications such as Earth Observation System (EOSDIS) and mobile Phone services tracking a large number of clients, it is a daunting task to archive and index ever increasing volume of complex data that are continuously added to databases. To efficiently manage multidimensional data in scientific and data warehousing environments, R-tree based index structures have been widely used. In this paper, we propose a scalable technique called seeded clustering that allows us to maintain R-tree indexes by bulk insertion while keeping pace with high data arrival rates. Our approach uses a seed tree, which is copied from the top k levels of a target R-tree, to classify input data objects into clusters. We then build an R-tree for each of the clusters and insert the input R-trees into the target R-tree in bulk one at a time. We present detailed algorithms for the seeded clustering and bulk insertion as well as the results from our extensive experimental study. The experimental results show that the bulk insertion by seeded clustering outperforms the previously known methods in terms of insertion cost and the quality of target R-trees measured by their query performance.

Recently the construction industry in Korea is facing problems such as low productivity, contraction of the domestic construction market, growing competition, and so on. To enhance the competitiveness continuously through efficiency in this business environments, construction companies need to make efforts to measure and accumulate performance data based on the strategic factors. When analysing performance of construction projects, the unique characteristics of each project should be considered properly, by which the managers can identify current status of project in various perspectives. This study proposes the performance analysis system using the concepts of balanced scorecard and data warehouse technology. The suggested system provides the management with the flexibility in analyzing performance data by applying the pre-defined key performance indicators and the function of multi-dimensional analysis.
Data warehouses are usually dedicated to the processing of quires issued by decision support system(DSS). The response time of DSS queries is typically several orders of magnitude higher than the one of OLTP queries. Since DSS queries are often submitted interactively, techniques for reducing their response time are important. The caching of query results is one such technique particularly well suited to the DSS environment. In this paper, we present a cache manager for such an environment. Specifically, we define a canonical form of query. The cache manager looks up a query based on the exact query match or using a suggested query split process if the query is found is non-canonical form or in canonical form, respectively. It dynamically maintains the cache content by employing a profit function which reflects in an integrated manner the query execution cost, the size of query result, the reference rate, the maintenance cost of each result due to updates of their base tables, and the frequency of such updates. We performed the experimental evaluation and it positively shows the performance benefit of our cache manager.

An important technique used by database administrators (DBAs) is to improve performance in decision-support workloads associated with a Star schema is multi-level partitioning. Queries will then benefit from performance improvements via partition elimination, due to constraints on queries expressed on the dimension tables. As the task of multi-level partitioning can be overwhelming for a DBA we are proposing a wizard that facilitates the task by calculating a partitioning scheme for a particular workload. The system resides completely on a client and interacts with the costing estimation subsystem of the query optimizer via an API over the network, thereby eliminating any need to make changes to the optimizer. In addition, since only cost estimates are needed the wizard overhead is very low. By using a greedy algorithm for search space enumeration over the query predicates in the workload the wizard is efficient with worst-case polynomial complexity. The technology proposed can be applied to any clustering or partitioning scheme in any database management system that provides an interface to the query optimizer. Applied to the Teradata database the technology provides recommendations that outperform a human expert's solution as measured by the total execution time of the workload. We also demonstrate the scalability of our approach when the fact table (and workload) size increases.

Korean Internet shopping malls, which provide customers not only with convenient shopping experiences but also with purchasing, warehousing, shipping, and customs clearance services, have been playing a significant role in rapidly transforming Korean consumers into global consumers especially in purchasing fashion goods. Utilizing Ajzen and Fishbein(1980)'s Behavioral Intention Model, which postulates that behavioral intention is determined by attitude and subjective norm, this study identified behavioral intentions toward purchasing foreign fashion goods through Korean Internet shopping malls and the differences of behavioral intentions according to consumers’purchasing experiences on the Internet shopping malls. The data were gathered by surveying female university students living in the Seoul metropolitan area, Korea, and 222 questionnaires were used in the statistical analysis. Mean, standard deviation, factor analysis, t-test, cross tabulation, and $\chi$$^2$ analysis were used. The results indicated that purchasers had more favorable attitudes and subjective norms and higher behavioral intentions than non-purchasers. With respect to attitude, there were significant differences in behavioral beliefs and evaluation of outcomes for the variety and scarcity value factor. With respect to subjective norm, there were no significant differences in normative beliefs and motivation to comply toward friends, people who had purchasing experiences, fashion magazines. and celebrities between the two groups.
