  • While the Virgo Cluster Catalog (VCC) is well established catalog from deep photographic plate survey, with available survey data recently released (e.g., SDSS), it can be further updated concerning the membership and morphology of galaxies. While membership and morphology of galaxies included in the VCC are based on the single band imaging data, thanks to the multi-color imaging and spectroscopic observations of SDSS, we are able to revise the membership and morphology of sample galaxies in the fields of the Virgo cluster. We present a new catalog of galaxies in the Virgo cluster using SDSS DR7 data, the extended Virgo cluster catalog. Using SDSS imaging and spectroscopic data, we introduce two kinds of galaxy classifications which are complementary each other. In addition to traditional morphological classification by visual inspection of the images ("Primary Classification"), we also attempt to classify galaxies with the spectroscopic features ("Secondary Classification"). The primary classification is basically based on the scheme of galaxy morphological classification of VCC. The secondary classification relies on the SED shape and presence of emission/absorption lines returned from SDSS. Our morphological classifications allow to study the evolution and associated star formation histories of galaxies in the Virgo cluster.

  • A method for resident space object detection in video stream processing using a set of matched filters has been proposed. Matched filters are constructed based on the connection between the Fourier spectrum shape of the difference frame and the magnitude of the linear velocity projection onto the observation plane. Experimental data were obtained using the mobile optical surveillance system for low-orbit space objects. The detection problem in testing mode was solved for raw video data with intensity signals from three satellites: KORONAS-FOTON, CUSAT 2/FALCON 9, and GENESIS-1. Difference frames of video data with the AQUA satellite pass were used to construct matched filters. The satellites were automatically detected at points where the difference in the value of their linear velocity projection and the reference satellite was close in value. An initial approximation of the satellites slant range vector and position vector has been obtained based on the values of linear velocity projection onto the frame plane. It has been established that the difference in the inclination angle between the detected satellite intensity signal Fourier image and the reference satellite mask corresponds to the difference in the inclinations of these objects. The proposed method allows for detecting and estimating the initial approximation of the slant range and position vector of artificial and natural space objects, such as satellites, debris, and asteroids.

  • A fast and inexpensive approximate analysis method to predict power output characteristics of the Stilting engines in a preliminary design stage was investigated. In basic equations proposed by Walker, typical temperatures of working fluids in expansion and compression spaces were treated as those of working fluids in heater and cooler respectively. While the temperature of working fluid in the expansion space was actually lower than that of working fluid in the heater, the temperature of working fluid in the compression space was higher than that of working fluids in the cooler. In this paper, the working fluid temperature of expansion space was treated as lower than the heater temperature and that of compression space was treated as higher than the cooler temperature. Also, according to them, the power output characteristics of the Stirling engine were evaluated with respect to the GPU-3 and 4-215 Stilting engines. The following conclusions were drawn from the analysis. 1. Using the available experimental data from the GPU-3 Stirling engine, it was shown that the approximate analysis predicts the brake power with a maximum error of 19 percent at 1, 000rpm and with a minimum error of 3 percent at 2, 000rpm. 2. The approximate analysis data which for the GPU-3 Stirling engine were much closer to the experimental data than those of adiabatic 2nd order and 3rd order analysis within 1, 500rpm to 2, 500rpm. 3. The approximate analysis data which for the GPU-3 and 4-215 Stilting engines were much closer to the experimental data than those of the Beal number analysis.

  • Text data has always accounted for a major portion of the world's information. As the volume of information increases exponentially, the portion of text data also increases significantly. Text classification is therefore still an important area of research. LDA is an updated, probabilistic model which has been used in many applications in many other fields. As regards text data, LDA also has many applications, which has been applied various enhancements. However, it seems that no applications take care of the input for LDA. In this paper, we suggest a way to map the input space to a reduced space, which may avoid the unreliability, ambiguity and redundancy of individual terms as descriptors. The purpose of this paper is to show that LDA can be perfectly performed in a "clean and clear" space. Experiments are conducted on 20 News Groups data sets. The results show that the proposed method can boost the classification results when the appropriate choice of rank of the reduced space is determined.

  • This paper proposes a sign reversal channel switching method in space-frequency block code for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system. In case of sending source data on other antenna, it is necessary for the receiver to change combining method according to the channel variation. If one does not know the predefined channel switching sequence, it is not possible to decode the received data precisely. In transmit data symbols' exchanges for a channel switching, data symbols are exchanged according to a format of space-frequency block code. In this paper, we proposes a simple sign reversal method except exchanging data symbols between transmit antennas. It is shown that this method occurs another combining method for a simple encryption in the receiver.

  • The main purpose of this study is to fit catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data about Korea chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) stock with a state-space production (SSP) model, and to provide stock assessment results. We chose a surplus production model for the chub mackerel data, namely annual yield and CPUE. Then we employed a state-space layer for a production model to consider two sources of variability arising from unmodelled factors (process error) and noise in the data (observation error). We implemented the model via script software ADMB-RE because it reduces the computational cost of high-dimensional integration and provides Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling, which is required for Bayesian approaches. To stabilize the numerical optimization, we considered prior distributions for model parameters. Applying the SSP model to data collected from commercial fisheries from 1999 to 2017, we estimated model parameters and management references, as well as uncertainties for the estimates. We also applied various production models and showed parameter estimates and goodness of fit statistics to compare the model performance. This study presents two significant findings. First, we concluded that the stock has been overexploited in terms of harvest rate from 1999 to 2017. Second, we suggest a SSP model for the smallest goodness of fit statistics among several production models, especially for fitting CPUE data with fluctuations.

  • The Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) from GPS with high resolution in terms of time and space might reduce the limitations of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model for easily variable phenomena, such as precipitation and cloud. We have converted to PWV from Global Positioning System (GPS) data of Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF). First of all, we have selected the heavy rainfall case of having a predictability limitation in time and space due to small-scale motion. In order to evaluate the effect for GPS PWV, we have executed the sensitivity experiment with PWV from GPS data over Korean peninsula in the Weather Research & Forecasting 3-Dimensional Variational (WRF-3DVAR). We have also suggested the direction of further research for an improvement of the predictability of NWP model on the basis of this case.

  • We report on development of a ground-based bi-axial Search-Coil Magnetometer (SCM) designed to measure time-varying magnetic fields associated with magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling processes. The instrument provides two-axis magnetic field wave vector data in the Ultra Low Frequency or ULF (1 mHz to 5 Hz) range. ULF waves are well known to play an important role in energy transport and loss in geospace. The SCM will primarily be used to observe generation and propagation of the subclass of ULF waves. The analog signals produced by the search-coil magnetic sensors are amplified and filtered over a specified frequency range via electronics. Data acquisition system digitizes data at 10 samples/s rate with 16-bit resolution. Test results show that the resolution of the magnetometer reaches $0.1pT/{\sqrt{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz, and demonstrate its satisfactory performance, detecting geomagnetic pulsations. This instrument is scheduled to be installed at the Korean Antarctic station, Jang Bogo, in the austral summer 2016-2017.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a period analysis algorithm for detecting new variable stars in the time-series data observed by charge coupled device (CCD). We used the data from a variable star monitoring program of the CBNUO. The R filter data of some magnetic cataclysmic variables observed for more than 20 days were chosen to achieve good statistical results. World Coordinate System (WCS) Tools was used to correct the rotation of the observed images and assign the same IDs to the stars included in the analyzed areas. The developed algorithm was applied to the data of DO Dra, TT Ari, RXSJ1803, and MU Cam. In these fields, we found 13 variable stars, five of which were new variable stars not previously reported. Our period analysis algorithm were tested in the case of observation data mixed with various fields of view because the observations were carried with 2K CCD as well as 4K CCD at the CBNUO. Our results show that variable stars can be detected using our algorithm even with observational data for which the field of view has changed. Our algorithm is useful to detect new variable stars and analyze them based on existing time-series data. The developed algorithm can play an important role as a recycling technique for used data
