  • The present study is to identify discharge characteristic from the mouth of floating debris in the Nakdong River through real time tracking of moving route and by analyzing hydrometeorologic environmental. To identify the path and route of outflow through the mouth of the river of floating debris, small-sized buoy equipped with satellite location transmitters was used. Moreover, to identify hydrometeorologic environmental, flux of the river, change of discharge of the River-Mouth Weir and wind direction of the mouth of the river area were analyzed. From now on, the present study is expected to be utilized as basic data to identify damage and flowing into nearby ocean of the floating debris of Nakdong River in time of severe rain storm.

  • In order to estimate the influence of wind stress in the southwestern coastal waters of the Japan Sea, the wind stress was estimated from the shipboard wind data of the Fisheries Research and Development Agency along the serial observation lines and Buoy No. 6 of the Japan Meteorological Agency. 5,100 wind data are used to construct a data set of monthly mean wind stress during 10 years from 1978 to 1987. The negative values of the mean zonal wind stress curl at Ulleung Basin in the study area seem to be responsible for the formation of the warm core. The volume transport of the East Korea Warm Current are estimated quantitatively by the variations of the Ekman transport associated with the reversing direction of the monsoon. And the distribution of the warm core is explained by the simple three layer model.

  • Analysis on the temporal variation of the stratification is carried out by using the continuous water temperature and salinity data observed in the coastal monitoring buoy in Mikawa Bay, Japan. The main analysis results are as follows. The stratification pattern have an obvious and dominant 1-year period variation and the occurrence frequency (days) are exponentially decreased as the stratification intensity (SI) defined as the density difference between surface and bottom layers linearly increases. The frequency distribution function of the SI is presumably close to the log-normal function type or exponential function type. From the water temperature and salinity scatter diagram analysis, the line and loop type patterns are shown in the bottom and surface layers, respectively. In addition, the analysis of the SI estimation show that the error bound in case of using the weekly-monitoring data is about 4.45 times greater than that in case of using the continuous (daily) monitoring data.

  • In this study, we apply a three-dimensional circulation model, MOHID (MOdelo $HIDrodin{\hat{a}}mico$), and reproduce oceanic variation around the East Asian seas including Korea in 2016. Simulation results are verified by using objective analysis fields (EN4, ARMOR3D, AVISO, and SIO products) and in-situ observation data (serial oceanographic and buoy data). Verification results show that general characteristics of the water temperature, sea level anomaly, surface velocity, and mixed layer depths simulated by MOHID are similar with those of the objective analysis fields in the East Asian seas. Especially, when buoy data in the coastal areas are compared, correlation coefficients of sea surface temperature and sea level anomaly are both over 0.8 and normalized standard deviations are between 0.85 and 1.15, respectively. However, it is analyzed that additional improvement would be necessary in the representation of thermocline structure in the East Sea and strong stratification phenomena in the Yellow and South Sea in summer.

  • For the evaluation of wind resources, numerical simulation was carried out as a tool for establishing wind map around the korean peninsula. Initial and boundary condition are given by 3 hourly RDAPS(Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System) data of KMA(Korea Meteorology Administration) and high resolution terrain elevation land cover(30 seconds) data from USGS(United States Geological Survey). Furthermore, Data assimilation was adopted to improve initial meteorological data with buoy and QuikSCAT seawinds data. The simulation was performed from 2003 to 2006 year. To understand wind data correctly in complex terrain as the korean peninsula, at this research, Wind map was classified 4 categories by distance from coastline and elevation.

  • It has been reported that the wave heights measured by Wave and Tide gauges (WTG) have been underestimated, and thus it is important to improve its measuring accuracy for enhancing estimation of harbor tranquility. In this study, the significant wave heights from WTG were calibrated using measured data from AWAC and Waverider buoys moored at the same four locations with the WTG. It was observed that the product of significant wave height and peak wave period, HT, was not underestimated but linearly proportional between the measurements by two instruments. This linearity was applied to develop 3rd order polynomial functions that best represented the relationship between HT and significant wave heights measured by WTG. These functions were then applied to calibrate the WTG significant wave heights that were lower than 0.7 m, the critical value established for the low waves in this study. The results showed that the linearity between the AWAC (or Waverider buoy) and calibrated wave heights were improved, and the magnitude of underestimated WTG wave heights were increased to be more realistic. The results of this study are expected to be effectively applied for other data sets obtained by WTG only, to increase the observation accuracy of WTG and to improve the estimation of harbor tranquility.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of wave transformation in the shallow water of the Nakdong River estuary due to variations in air pressure, air temperature, wind speed, and wind direction. We analyzed the correlation between weather factors and wind waves in offshore regions near Geoje Island and the Nakdong River estuary in April and May 2007. The weather and wind wave data were obtained from the automatic ocean observation buoy near Geoje Island operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). For the estuary region, the wind wave information was the result of field observations, and weather data were obtained from the Busan Meteorological Station. Field observations of water waves in April and May showed that the maximum wave height decreased by about 2.2 m. M oreover, wave height decreased significantly by about 1.3 m due to the reduction in wave energy caused by the water waves propagating from Geoje buoy to the Nakdong River estuary. We conclude that offshore or wind waves coming into the Nakdong River estuary showed considerable height variation due to the prevailing weather conditions, especially wind speed and direction. In particular, headwinds tended to decrease the wave size in inverse proportion to the wind speed.

  • In this study, in order to analyze the spatial distribution of cold water occurred in the Southeast Sea of Korea, the K-means clustering method was used to analyze the ocean observatory buoy of Gori and Yangpo and GHTSST Level 4 from 2016 to 2018. The buoy data was used to identify the change in sea water temperature and the cold water occurrence at Gori and Yangpo in the Southeast Sea. As a result, the sea water temperature of Gori and Yangpo decreased equally at the cold water occurrence. Therefore, the reciprocal of the sea water temperature and the variance of SST were compared to see the changes of SST when the cold water occurs. When the reciprocal of the sea water temperature increases, the dispersion of SST also increases. Through this, it can be seen that there is a change in the water temperature distribution of SST in the sea when the cold water occurs. After that, K-means clustering was used to classify the cold water. After analyzing the optimal K value for clustering by using the Elbow method, it was possible to classify a region with cold water. Through this, it is estimated that the spatial distribution and diffusion range of the cold water, and it can be estimated and used in future studies to identify damage caused by the cold water and predict spatial spread.

  • This paper introduces remote-sensing data which can be practically applied for offshore wind resource assessment. Development of offshore wind energy is inevitable for Korea to achieve the national dissemination target of renewable energy, i.e., 5% uptil 2010. However, the only available offshore in-situ measurement, marine buoy data would not represent areal wind characteristics. Consequently, remote-sensing technology has been started to apply to offshore wind resource assessment and is actively developing. Among them, NCAR/NCEP reanalysis dataset, QuikSCAT blended dataset, and offshore wind retrieval from SAR imagery are briefly summarized in this paper.

  • This paper describes on the real-time monitoring of net setting and hauling process for fishing operations of Danish seine vessels in the southern waters of Korea as an application of a PC based ECDIS system. Tracking of fishing process was performed for the large scale Danish seine vessel of G/T 90 and 350 PS class using the fishing gear which the length of net, ground rope, head rope and sweep line including warp in both sides were 86m, 104m, 118m and 3,200m, respectively. Tracking information for net setting and hauling process was continuously recorded for 23 fishing operations performed on November and December, 2003. All measurement data, such as trawl position, heading, towing course and past track which was individually time stamped during data acquisition, was processed in real time on the ECDIS and displayed simultaneously on the ENC chart. The results indicated that after the separation of a marker buoy from Danish seiner, the averaged running speed of vessel and the averaged setting period while shooting the seine on the course of diamond shape to surround the fish school in the 23 fishing operations were 8.3 knots and 13.1 minutes, respectively. And with the maker buoy taken on board, the averaged running speed of vessel and the averaged towing period while closing the seine on the straight route was 1.0 knots and 47.0 minutes, respectively. After the closing stage of hand rope, the hand rope was towed by the averaged speed of 2.2 knots during the 13.0 minutes. The average area for route of diamond shape swept by sweep lines of the seine in 23 fishing grounds was $709,951.6m^2$. Further investigation is also planed to provide more quantitative tracking information and to achieve more effective surveillance and control of Danish seine vessels in EEZ fishing grounds.
