  • This study tried to analyze the problems by critically examining how the chance is taught in relation to the concept of chance and randomness in the Korean elementary school mathematics curriculum. To this end, the concepts of chance and randomness were first examined, and problems were presented in based on this by the literature analysis on mathematics curriculum material and textbooks for elementary school in Korea. As a result, there was a lack of experience in reasoning based on data, and randomness instruction was not performed properly. In addition, as the teaching of the sample space was omitted, contradictory materials were being used. Moreover, it was pointed out that the teaching of chance is focused on a specific grade level. For the improvement of the teaching of chance, a teaching of the probability experiment and the sample space were mainly suggested, and it was also suggested that the contents of the data area be adjusted for the composition focused on a specific grade.

  • The purpose of this paper is to construct a prediction system on the chance of rain in a local region using a fuzzy relational model. The prediction system consists of two parts. One is a prediction part on the chance of rain. The compositional law of fuzzy inference, proposed by Zadeh, is applied to predict the chance of rain. The other is a learning part of a fuzzy relational model using input-output data. A simple and fast learning algorithm is used in this part. Simulations are carried out by the actual weather data in our city and their results show the validity of prediction by the fuzzy relational approach.

  • This article presents a new measure of chance-corrected interobserver agreement among multivariate ratings of many observers. Modifying an approach by Berry and Mielke, a new agreement measure is proposed. The important modificaton is to use the volume of simplex composed of data points as the disagreement masure. The proposed measure accounts agreement for multivariate interval observations among many observers. Hypothetical and real-life data sets are analyzed for illustrative purpose.

  • In this study, by analyzing of types and functions of questions presented in Data and Chance area of the mathematics textbooks for grades 1-6 of the 2015 revised curriculum, the characteristics of the questions presented in the textbook were identified, and implications for teaching and learning related to the questions in this textbook were obtained. Types and functions of the presented questions showed different proportions of appearance according to the grade clusters, and this seems to be related to the learning contents for each grade clusters and the characteristics of grade clusters. In addition, it can be seen that the functions of questions are related to the types of questions. Teachers should have pedagogical content knowledge about Data and Chance area as well as developmental characteristics for each grade clusters. In addition, the teacher should present an suitable question for the level of grade clusters and the nature of the content to be taught so that effective learning can be achieved based on the understanding of the characteristics and functional characteristics of each type of questions. The results of this study can contribute to statistical teaching in a progressive direction by providing a foundation for textbook writing and teaching/learning.

  • The main purpose of this study is to describe the different life chances among various occupational groups in Chonbuk Province which has been excluded in the process of Korea's industrialization since the 1960s. More specifically, this study analyzed to what extent 6 occupational groups have the different life chances in the sub-levels such as health conditions and leisure life. According to our data analysis, it is found that the 6 occupational groups have the different life chances. That is, while those who are engaged in the higher prestigious occupation have a good life chance, those who in the lower prestigious occupation have a worse life chance. For example, among 6 occupational groups, professional-managerial who secure the higher autonomy and stability in their work have the highest life chance in the labor and health, and leisure life. Next, professional-technical, white-collar, sales-service occupants have the higher life chance after the professional-managerial. However, these 3 occupation groups are partially inconsistent in the two sectors of the life chance. Specifically, the professional-technical, despite their autonomy and stability in the work world, conceived that their work conditions are worse as well as badly influencing on their own health. On the other band, the sales-service workers group, despite their lower social status, is relatively autonomous and stable in their work environment and thus has the higher life chances. Finally, agricultural and productive workers have relatively the lower lift chances. Nevertheless, there are some clear differences among these 2 occupational groups. That is, the farmers have relatively the higher life chances in the sectors of socio-economic characteristics, and labor and health rather than productive workers. As a result, the productive workers are generally located in the lowest level of life chance. This fact is particularly attributed to the fragility of manufacturing industries in Chonbuk Province.

  • Imbalanced data sets are difficult to be classified since most classifiers are developed based on the assumption that class distributions are well-balanced. In order to improve the error back-propagation algorithm for the classification of imbalanced data sets, a new error function is proposed. The error function controls weight-updating with regards to the classes in which the training samples are. This has the effect that samples in the minority class have a greater chance to be classified but samples in the majority class have a less chance to be classified. The proposed method is compared with the two-phase, threshold-moving, and target node methods through simulations in a mammography data set and the proposed method attains the best results.

  • Purpose: This study sought to investigate health behavior (HB) and its affecting factors based on Anderson's behavioral model in Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR). Also, it attempted to identify the mediation of the health locus of control (HLC) between HB and the affecting factors. Methods: Secondary data from 694 people without noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) from a survey conducted by the Ewha Womans and the Laos University were used. The measurements included predisposing, enabling, and needs factors, HLC, HB (current non-smoking, low-risk drinking, physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, medical checkup). The mediating effect was analyzed using Baron and Kenny's method and the Sobel test. Results: Predisposing (gender, educational level, ethnic), enabling (social support, item ownership in household) and the needs factors (body mass index) were affecting HB. Internal HLC had a positive influence on HB. The stronger the others and chance HLC, the lower the HB. Chance HLC mediated the relationship between the educational level and HB. Conclusion: There is a need to recognize the importance of chance HLC as a mediator between the educational level and HB. Through this result, high-quality nursing education for the prevention of NCDs should be developed considering the impact of chance HLC.

  • This study examined a causal relation between employment and depression among low-income young mothers who participated in New Chance Demonstration Study(NC). Using baseline and first follow-up interview data from NC study, this study selected 756 young mothers who were at risk of depression and unemployed at baseline. About 18% of them were employed and 45% of them were no longer at risk of depression at the first follow-up interview. The young mothers grade level and their race/ethnicity were significantly related to the number of weeks employed between the two time points and employment at the 1st follow-up interview. It was also found that employment was negatively associated with depression at the 1st follow-up interview. These findings imply that employment can ameliorate depressive symptoms of low-income young mothers.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the levels of cognitive demand and questioning types in tasks of 'Data and Chance' presented in elementary mathematics textbooks in Korea, the United States, and Australia. The levels of cognitive demand of textbook tasks were analyzed according to the knowledge and process and thinking types required in the tasks. The tasks were also analyzed for questioning types, answer types, and response types. As a result, in terms of knowledge and process and thinking types in tasks, all three countries had something in common: the percentage of tasks requiring 'representation' and process was the highest, and the percentage of tasks requiring 'basic application of skill/concept' was also the highest. From a thinking types perspective, differences were found between textbook tasks in the three countries in graph and chance learning. The results of analyzing questioning types showed that in all three textbooks, the percentage of observational reasoning questions was highest, followed by the percentage of factual questions. The proportions and characteristics of the constructing questions included in the U.S. and Australian textbooks differed from those in the Korean textbooks. Based on these results, this study presents implications for constructing elementary mathematics textbook tasks in 'Data and Chance.'

  • The study is aimed to develop fuzzy logic system that has overcurrent and saturation time as input variable and possibility of electrical fire as output variable by making bad conductor area with physical damage to indoor wiring. Most previous studies focused on thermal characteristics depending on the current size and no study considered the current size and saturation time at the same time. Therefore, the paper made into account current value and saturation time together. To this end, it created bad conductor area half the size of IV conductor (1.6 mm) on purpose and transmit electrical current from 10A to 60A by unit of 2A to find out the thermal characteristics and saturation time for current. Based on the data that came out, the study applied fuzzy logic and established the current and saturation time as input variable and chance of fire as output variable. As a result, the center of area of the system that depended only on the existing current value was 75 while the system that applied both current and saturation time presented the chance of fire at 92. It is found that the chance of bad conductor area and deteriorated insulation of electrical wire had current and saturation time as important variables. The data can be used as basic data like deteriorated wire insulation or operation features of circuit breaker in investigating the cause of electrical fire.
