In the present paper, glass fibers are substituted partially with monofilament fishnet and polyester matrix for making the composites. The composite specimens were prepared in accordance with ASTM for analyzing the flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties. Furthermore, machinability revealed the interaction of glass fiber and partial substituted monofilament fishnet fiber with the matrix. Fiber pullouts on the fractured specimen during the physical testing of the composites are also investigated by COSLAB microscope. The results reveal that the fishnet based composites have appreciably higher flexural properties. Furthermore, the glass fiber, woven roving and fishnet composite has more storage modulus and significant mechanical damping. The composite specimens were fabricated by hand lay-up method. Hence, these composites are the possible applications to develop the value added products. The results of this study are presented.

This paper presents a robust vibration control methodology of smart structural systems. The governing equations and associated boundary conditions are derived by Hamilton's principle. A robust controller is designed using a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to the multiobjective synthesis. The design objectives are to achieve a mix of H$\sub$$\infty$/ performance and H$_2$ performance satisfying constraints on the closed-loop pole locations in the face of model uncertainties. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of LMI approach in damping out the multiple modes of vibration of the piezo/beam system.
This paper aims at demonstrating the feasibility of active control of beams with a multiobjective state-feedback control technique. The multiobjective state-feedback controller is designed on a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach for the multiobjective synthesis. The design objectives are to achieve a mix of Hoo performance and H2 performance satisfying constraints on the closed-loop pole locations in the face of model uncertainties. The controller is also designed to reject the effects of the noise and external of disturbances. For the theoretical analysis, the governing equation of motion is derived by Hamilton's principle to describe the dynamics of a smart structural system. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated robust controller in damping out the multiple vibration modes of the piezo/beam system.
Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) are smart materials in which the inherent stiffness and damping properties can be changed by the influence of an external magnetic field. The magneto-rheological (MR) effect depends on the orientation characteristics of the dispersed magneto-responsible particles (MRPs) in the matrix. In this study, natural rubber (NR) and ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) were blended and used as a matrix of an MRE. EPDM was pre-cured before blending with NR. The Mooney viscosity, curing characteristics, and mechanical properties were analyzed with various pre-curing conditions of EPDM and the NR/EPDM blend. The results show that excellent mechanical properties of the NR/EPDM blend-based MRE were obtained when the pre-curing time of EPDM was 60 min. The aging property of the NR-based MRE was improved by the introduction of pre-cured EPDM. Also, the anisotropic MRE showed a higher MR effect than that of the isotropic MRE.

Generally, a structural system with large inextensional deformations, or in other words, non-strained deformation is called as 'Unstable Structure', Truss-linked structures, cable structures, membrane structures and movable structures as foldable space structures etc, are included in this category. In this paper, a dynamic analysis method for unstable structural systems is presented. Governing equations for dynamic analysis of unstable truss structures with inextensional displacements are derived. Because of singularity of inverse matrixin in practical analysis of unstable structure, the generalized inverse matrix is Introduced to resolve the singular problem. Also, the RREF technique is used to get the inextensional displacement mode. Two unstable truss structures are analyzed by using presented method. Damping is not considered. From the given results, it is known that proposed method is useful to figure out the dynamic behavior of unstable truss structures.
The performance of a mixed $H_{\infty}/H_2$ design with pole placement constraints based on robust vibration control for a piezo/beam system is investigated. The governing equation of motion for the piezo/beam system is derived by Hamilton's principle. The assumed mode method is used to discretize the governing equation into a set of ordinary differential equation. A robust controller is designed by $H_{\infty}/H_2$ feedback control law that satisfies additional constraints on the closed-loop pole location in the face of model uncertainties, which are derived for a general class of convex regions of the complex plane. These constraints are expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) approach for the multiobjective synthesis. The validity and applicability of this approach for vibration suppressions of SMART structural systems are discussed by damping out the multiple vibrational modes of the piezo/beam system.

The dynamic behavior of crankshaft-bearing system in scroll compressor has been investigated using the combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The finite element formulation is proposed including the field element for a shaft section and the point element at balancer weight locations, bearing locations, etc., whereas the conventional method is used with the elements. The Houbolt method is used to consider the time march for the integration of the system equations. The linear stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated for a finite cylindrical fluid-film bearing by solving the Reynolds equation, using finite difference method. The orbital response of crankshaft supported on the linear bearing model is obtained, considering balancer weights of motor rotor. And, the steady state displacement of crankshaft are compared with a variation in balancer weight. The loci of crankshaft at bearing locations are composed of the synchronous whirl component and the non-synchronous whirl component.

Mechanical systems installed in transport devices, such as vehicles, airplanes, and ships, are mostly subject to translational accelerations at the joints during operations. This base acceleration excitation has a large influence on the performance of the system, therefore, its response must be well analyzed. However, the existing methods for dynamic analysis of structures have some limitations in use. This study presents a new numerical method using relative acceleration to solve these limitations. If the governing equation of motion is linear and the mass matrix, the damping matrix, and the stiffness matrix are constant over time in the finite element analysis, the proposed method can be applied to the transient behavior analysis and the harmonic response analysis of the structure. Because it is not necessary to introduce a virtual mass and the rigid body motions are removed from the analysis, it is possible to use not only the direct integration method in the time domain but also the mode superposition method to obtain the dynamic responses. This paper demonstrates with three examples how the present method is suitable for the dynamic analysis of a structure with multi-degree of freedom.
In this study, a wavelet-based covariance-driven system identification technique is proposed for damage assessment of structures under ambient excitation. Assuming the ambient excitation to be a white-noise process, the covariance computation is shown to be able to separate the effect of random excitation from the response measurement. Wavelet transform (WT) is then used to convert the covariance response in the time domain to the WT magnitude plot in the time-scale plane. The wavelet coefficients along the curves where energy concentrated are extracted and used to estimate the modal properties of the structure. These modal property estimations lead to the calculation of the stiffness matrix when either the spectral density of the random loading or the mass matrix is given. The predicted stiffness matrix hence provides a direct assessment on the possible location and severity of damage which results in stiffness alteration. To demonstrate the proposed wavelet-based damage assessment technique, a numerical example on a 3 degree-of-freedom (DOF) system and an experimental study on a three-story building model, which are all under a broad-band excitation, are presented. Both numerical and experimental results illustrate that the proposed technique can provide an accurate assessment on the damage location. It is however noted that the assessment of damage severity is not as accurate, which might be due to the errors associated with the mode shape estimations as well as the assumption of proportional damping adopted in the formulation.
