  • In this paper, an efficient dynamic analysis method of a building structure with viscoelastic dampers is proposed. Viscoelastic dampers are used for the purpose of controlling vibration of buildings. The matrix condensation technlque based on the rigid diaphragm assumption is not readily applicable for building structures with viscoelastic dampers. An improved procedure for damping matrix condensation is employed in the proposed method to increase the efficiency of analysis. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through analysis of an example structure.

  • Squeeze film dampers(SFDs) are designed and analyzed for radial superconducting bearings. The designed SFDs are mounted on the superconductors submerged in liquid nitrogen such that the dampers should supply additional damping to the relatively underdamped superconducting bearing support. Basic theory of SFD with superconducting bearing are introduced. Rotordynamic simulations are provided to support the feasibility of the superconducting magnetic bearings mounted on SFDs for a horizontal flywheel energy storage system.

  • In order to verify the effectiveness of adding viscoelastic dampers to full-scale steel frame structure on the reduction of their seismic and wind response, a experimental work was carried out. First, The test was conducted on the VE dampers subjected to sinusoidal excitations under a variety of ambient temperatures, frequency, and the damper strain. Results from these tests showed that the viscoelastic dampers have high energy dissipation capacity Second, (omitted)

  • In this paper, a systematic technique is proposed for the optimal placement and design of nonlinear dampers for building structures. The concept of Output Frequency Response Function (OFRF) is applied to analytically represent the output frequency response of a building frame where nonlinear viscous dampers are fitted for suppression of vibration during earthquakes. An effective algorithm is derived using the analytical representation to optimally determine the locations and parameters of the nonlinear dampers. Various numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the optimal designs. A comparison of the vibration suppression performance with that of the frame structure under a random or uniform damping allocation is also made to demonstrate the advantages of the new designs over traditional solutions.

  • A semi-active control platform comprising the mechanical model of magnetorheological (MR) dampers, the bang-bang control law and damage material models is developed, and the simulation method of steel plate shear wall (SPSW) and optimization method for capacity design of MR dampers are proposed. A 15-story steel frame-SPSW structure is analyzed to evaluate the seismic performance of nonlinear semi-active controlled structures with optimal designed MR dampers, results indicate that the control platform and simulation method are stable and fast, and the damage accumulation effects of uncontrolled structure are largely reduced, and the seismic performance of controlled structures has been improved.

  • Magnetorheological damper has received significant attention in recent years due to the reason that it can offer adaptability of active control devices without requiring the associated large power sources. In this paper, performance tests on a MR damper are carried out under different currents, excitation amplitudes and frequencies, the damping characteristics and energy dissipation capacity of the MR damper are analyzed. Elasto-plastic dynamic analysis on a space frame structure incorporated with MR dampers is conducted, and numerical analysis results show that MR dampers can significantly mitigate the structural vibration responses. Finally, the genetic algorithm with the improved binary crossover and mutation technique is adopted to optimize the arrangement of MR dampers. Numerical results show that dynamic responses of the optimal controlled structure are mitigated more effectively.

  • In this paper a comprehensive study for the structural control of Jacket platform with Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper is presented. The control is implemented as a closed loop feedback of the applied voltage in the MR Damper using fuzzy logic. Nine cases of combinations with MR damper are presented to complete the work. The selection of the MR damper (RD 1005-3) is based on the operating parameters (i.e., the range of frequency and displacement). Bingham model is used to obtain the control forces. The damping co-efficient of the model is obtained using empirical relationship between the voltage in the MR damper and input velocity from the structural members. The force acting on the structure is obtained from Morison equation using P-M spectrum. The results show that the reliable control was obtained when there was a continuous connection of multiple MR dampers with the lower levels of the structure. Independent MR dampers at different levels provided control within a range, while the MR dampers placed at alternate positions gave very high control.

  • An analytical model for the lateral vibration of beams with a bonded lap joint and partial layered dampers has been proposed in this paper. Both shear and normal forces acting along the interface between the elastic and viscoelastic layers were considered in the vibration analysis. Analytical results were compared with those obtained by a finite element method. Effects of the size and location of layers in partial dampers on system loss factor($\eta_s$) and resonant frequency($\omega_r$) were studied. which showed that partial dampers adhered to the site exhibiting the maximum amplitude of vibration were most influential in the increase of $\eta_s$ and the decrease of $\omega_r$. Specific system loss factor( $\eta_s$ divided by total mass of system) was also evaluated in the analysis.

  • An identification method for determination of the parameters of the rheological models of dampers made of viscoelastic material is presented. The models have two, three or four parameters and the model equations of motion contain derivatives of the fractional order. The results of dynamical experiments are approximated using the trigonometric function in the first part of the procedure while the model parameters are determined as the solution to an appropriately defined optimization problem. The particle swarm optimization method is used to solve the optimization problem. The validity and effectiveness of the suggested identification method have been tested using artificial data and a set of real experimental data describing the dynamic behavior of damper and a fluid frequently used in dampers. The influence of a range of excitation frequencies used in experiments on results of identification is also discussed.

  • Commercial vehicles are mostly subjected to relatively rougher ground environment than passenger vehicles. Many driver's seats of commercial vehicles have suspension system with spring and dampers. Then, impact or vibrative forces transmitted from the vehicle to the driver can be attenuated. This study deals with a ride evaluation method using sky-hook control algorithm for the suspension dampers. Vibration amplitude transmissibilities were compared between passive dampers and semi-active dampers with sky-hook control method.
