This paper is concerned with the design and application of an Electro-Rheological(ER) fluid damper to suppress the vibration of a rotor system. The system is flexible with a slender shaft and a thin disk, being supported by two ball bearings. In addition, to investigate the system performances also in the high speed range, the driving torque is made transmit through a speed increasing gear train. Along with the experiments, to predict and compare the ER damper effect, the rotor system is simulated as to its free and forced vibration characteristics by means of a finite element method code, which is assembled with the mathematical model of the designed ER damper.
Seismic response control has always been a grave concern with the damage and collapse of many buildings during the past earthquakes. While there are several existing techniques like base isolation, viscous damper, moment-resisting beam-column connections, tuned mass damper, etc., many of these are succumbing to either of large displacement, near-fault, and long-period earthquakes. Keeping this viewpoint, extensive research on the application of smart materials for seismic response control of buildings was attempted during the last decade. Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) with its unique properties of superelasticity and shape memory effect is one of the smart materials used for seismic control of buildings. In this paper, an exhaustive review has been compiled on the seismic control applications of SMA in buildings. Unique properties of SMA are discussed in detail and different phases of SMA along with crystal characteristics are illustrated. Consequently, various seismic control applications of SMA are discussed in terms of performance and compared with prevalent base isolators, bracings, beam-column connections, and tuned mass damper systems.
In recently, the vibration control of adjacent buildings have been studied and magneto-rheological(MR) fluid dampers have been applied to seismic response control. MR dampers can be controlled with small power supplies and the dynamic range of this damping force is quite large. This MR damper is one of semi-active dampers as a new class of smart dampers. In this study, vibration control effect according to the installation location of the MR damper connected adjacent buildings has been investigated. Adjacent building structures with different natural frequencies were used as example structures. Groundhook control model is applied to determinate control force of MR damper. In this numerical analysis, it has been shown that displacement responses can be effectively controlled as adjacent buildings are connected at roof floors by MR damper. And acceleration responses can be effectively reduced when two buildings are connected at the mid-stories of adjacent buildings by MR damper. Therefore, the installation floor of the MR damper should be selected with seismic response control target.
The present paper deals with the optimum performance of the passive hybrid control system for the benchmark highway bridge under the six earthquakes ground motion. The investigation is carried out on a simplified finite element model of the 91/5 highway overcrossing located in Southern California. A viscous fluid damper (known as VFD) or non-linear fluid viscous spring damper has been used as a passive supplement device associated with polynomial friction pendulum isolator (known as PFPI) to form a passive hybrid control system. A parametric study is considered to find out the optimum parameters of the PFPI system for the optimal response of the bridge. The effect of the velocity exponent of the VFD and non-linear FV spring damper on the response of the bridge is carried out by considering different values of velocity exponent. Further, the influences of damping coefficient and vibration period of the dampers are also examined on the response of the bridge. To study the effectiveness of the passive hybrid system on the response of the isolated bridge, it is compared with the corresponding PFPI isolated bridges. The investigation showed that passive supplement damper such as VFD or non-linear FV spring damper associated with PFPI system is significantly reducing the seismic response of the benchmark highway bridge. Further, it is also observed that non-linear FV spring damper hybrid system is a more promising strategy in reducing the response of the bridge compared to the VFD associated hybrid system.
In this study, new shock absorbing system was proposed using silica gel particles according to the nano-technology. For the design and real application of the proposed damper, an experimental investigations are carried out using colloidal damper, which is statically loaded. The porous matrix is composed from silica gel(labyrinth architecture), coated by organo-silicones substances, in order to achieve a hydrophobic surface. Water is considered as associated lyophobic liquid. Reversible colloidal damper static test rig and the measuring technique of the static hysteresis were described. Iufluence of the water volume and particle diameters upon the reversible colloidal damper hysteresis was investigated. Also, influence of the relaxation time on the hysteresis of the damper was investigated. As a result, the proposed new shock absorbing damper is proved as an effective one, which can be replaced for the conventional hydraulic damper.
The bracing members capable of active control against seismic loads to reduce earthquake damage have been widely utilized in construction projects. Effectively reducing the structural damage caused by earthquake events, bracing systems equipped with retrofitting damper devices, which take advantage of the energy dissipation and impact absorption, have been widely used in practical construction sites. Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are a new generation of smart materials with the capability of recovering their predefined shape after experiencing a large strain. This is mainly due to the shape memory effects and the superelasticity of SMA. These properties make SMA an excellent alternative to be used in passive, semi-active, and active control systems in civil engineering applications. In this research, a new system in diagonal braces with slit damper combined with SMA is investigated. The diagonal element under the effect of tensile and compressive force turns to shear force in the slit damper and creates tension in the SMA. Therefore, by creating shear forces in the damper, it leads to yield and increases the energy absorption capacity of the system. The purpose of using SMA, in addition to increasing the stiffness and strength of the system, is to create reversibility for the system. According to the results, the highest capacity is related to the case where the ratio of the width of the middle section to the width of the end section (b1/b) is 1.0 and the ratio of the height of the middle part to the total height of the damper (h1/h) is 0.1. This is mainly because in this case, the damper section has the highest cross-section. In contrast, the lowest capacity is related to the case where b1/b=0.1 and the ratio h1/h=0.8.
This paper conducts a parametric study of a new tuned mass damper with pre-strained superelastic SMA helical springs (SMAS-TMD) on the vibration reduction effect. First, a force-displacement relation model of superelastic SMA helical spring is presented based on the multilinear constitutive model of SMA material, and the tension tests of the six SMA springs fabricated are implemented to validate the mechanical model. Then, a dynamic model of a single floor steel frame with the SMAS-TMD damper is set up to simulate the seismic responses of the frame, which are testified by the shaking table tests. The wire diameter, initial coil diameter, number of coils and pre-strain length of SMA springs are extracted to investigate their influences on the seismic response reduction of the frame. The numerical and experimental results show that, under different earthquakes, when the wire diameter, initial coil diameter and number of coils are set to the appropriate values so that the initial elastic stiffness of the SMA spring is between 0.37 and 0.58 times of classic TMD stiffness, the maximum reduction ratios of the proposed damper can reach 40% as the mass ratio is 2.34%. Meanwhile, when the pre-strain length of SMA spring is in a suitable range, the SMAS-TMD damper can also achieve very good vibration reduction performance. The vibration reduction performance of the SMAS-TMD damper is generally equal to or better than that of the classic optimal TMD, and the proposed damper effectively suppresses the detuning phenomena that often occurs in the classic TMD.

The primary purpose of this investigation is to find out the shear behavior and the shear capacity of RC bare frames, brick-infilled RC frames, and damper-retrofitted RC frames and to evaluate the average shear strength of brick--infill wall. The main variables art the absence of brick infill wall and steel plate slit damper. The test results show that the shear capacity of specimen IF-DR is 2.8 times as high as that of the specimen BF and it presents the fact that the retrofitting effect and the possibility of RC frame reuse with changing the slit damper is verified. And the average shear strength of the brick infill wall is figured to be at $5.0 kgf/cm^2$.

In this paper, the performance of a toggle brace-MR damper system is evaluated for the control of the structure excited by earthquake load and the non-linearity of the toggle system is investigated. Considering that the control force of MR damper described by Bingham model is a function of velocity, velocity amplification factor by toggle brace system is calculated and the effect of toggle configuration on the amplification factor is also evaluated. Numerical results show that the control performance can be largely enhanced using toggle brace system especially for the case that the MR damper installed with conventional brace system such as Chevron and diagonal cannot provide enough control force under severe earthquake load.
Simple and effectively developed learning control logic is used to control vibration of U type Tuned Liquid Damper system. The purpose of this paper is design optimal control system to deal with unknown errors from nonlinearity and variation that cost modeling difficulty in complex structure and is followed with the desired behavior. Finally this hybrid control method applied to U type Tuned Liquid Damper structure gives the benefit from better performance of precision and stability of the structure by reducing vibration effect. This research leads to safety design in various structure to robust unspecified foreign disturbances such as earthquake.
