  • In order to reduce the amount of damage from natural disasters, we needs prevention meteorological database classified into the cause of disaster, damage elements etc. For this, we have analyzed four data, such as Statistical yearbook of calamities issued by the National Emergency Management Agency and Annual Climatological Report issued by the Korea Meteorological Administration and Recently 10 years for natural disaster damage and Statistics Yearbook from the Ministry of Government Administration and Human affairs. Through the analysis of disaster data, we have selected input variables, such as causes and elements, occurrence frequencies, vulnerable areas of natural disaster, etc. In order to reduce damage from natural disaster, the prevention activities and forecasting based on meteorological parameters and damage datas are required. In addition, it is necessary to process meteorological information for disaster prevention activities. Through these procedure, we have established the foundation of database about natural disasters. This database will be used to assess the natural disasters and build risk model and natural disasters mitigation plan.

  • Coastal cities suffer a great deal of storm and wind damage. The storm and wind characteristics vary between cities. Therefore, a storm and wind damage management system suited for specific characteristics is required for each coastal city. In this study, we analyze the current situation and establish the problem of storm and wind damage management system in regards to urban management, coastal management and disaster management. We also review the storm and wind damage management system for the USA and Japan. We consequently propose a plan to improve the storm and wind damage management system. As a result of the study, in terms of city management, we recommend the compulsory identification of disaster prevention districts, implementation of the integrated coastal city management plan, designation of natural disaster risk mitigation area as disaster prevention district, the division of disaster prevention district into wind damage prevention district, storm damage prevention district, erosion damage prevention district, the building of restrictions at the disaster prevention district by ordinance, etc. In regards to coastal management, we suggest the delegation of authority to delegate coastal erosion management area to the local government, the subdivision of coastal erosion management area into erosion serious area, erosion progress area, erosion concern area, the building restrictions at coastal erosion management area by ordinance, development of erosion prediction chart, etc. In relation to disaster management, we recommend the integration of "countermeasures against natural disasters act" and "disasters and safety management basic act", the local government-led disaster prevention system, the local disaster management network, and the customized local disaster prevention plan, etc.

  • To reduce the damage from the coastal disaster such as typhoon and tsunami, a possible option is the eco-friendly approach to minimize the destruction of ecological system. One of feasible idea is the forest for damage prevention artificially arranged along the beach. To understand a precise physics on the flow before and after the forest, we use a CFD method. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model has been constructed based on tree cases in a real forest located at Byin-myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungnam. The CFD computation using a commercial code COMSOL multiphysics is performed for the distribution of real spatial coordinate of each tree. Through this investigation, the CFD techniques are shown to be applied to the research of forest composition plan. The physics in the regime from laminar to turbulent flow is qualitatively explained, and the obtained data are compared one another quantitatively.

  • Stone pagoda structures have continued to be aged due to the combination of various damage factors. However, some studies on nonstructural damage have been carried out, but assessment studies on structural damage have not been done in various ways. Therefore, in this study, structural and nonstructural influencing factors according to the damage types are classified and the damage assessment according to the structural influencing factors affecting the behavior of the stone pagoda structure is performed. In addition, the damage rating classification criteria for each type of structural damages or damage locations are presented, and the damage index is calculated by providing the criteria for the classification of damage according to the degree of damage to which the damage is caused. Therefore, this study can evaluate quantitatively the damage status of stone pagoda structures.

  • This study was designed to assess, whether a new chemotherapeutic microtubule inhibitor, Epothilone B (EpoB, Patupilone), can induce DNA damage in normal ovarian cells (MM14.Ov), and to evaluate if such damage could be repaired. The changes were compared with the effect of paclitaxel (PTX) commonly employed in the clinic. The alkaline comet assay technique and TUNEL assay were used. The kinetics of DNA damage formation and the level of apoptotic cells were determined after treatment with IC50 concentrations of EpoB and PTX. It was observed that PTX generated significantly higher apoptotic and genotoxic changes than EpoB. The peak was observed after 48 h of treatment when the DNA damage had a maximal level. The DNA damage induced by both tested drugs was almost completely repaired. As EpoB in normal cells causes less damage to DNA it might be a promising anticancer drug with potential for the treatment of ovarian tumors.

  • This study shows the differences among residents’ consciousness for general infectious disease and sterilization mediated by vermin. We categorized both industry-related people who work in restaurants, hygiene service shops, whole sales, government organizations, PC shops, factories, department stores and non-industry-related people who work in schools, general offices into two groups for this study. The discovery of vermin held 86% of total exam cases. The vermin included mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, flies, and so on. People thought these vermin might mediate bacteria infection to human. 80.3% of persons thought mite might exist in blankets, beds and couches. Among 66.6% of total experience of vermin damage, the main damage came from mosquitoes. Frequently used methods of prevention from vermin damage were as follows: "spray of effective chemicals", "install traps" and " report to a prevention company" in order. It indicated that people did not take special actions to repel vermin in spite of their knowing seriousness of damage. Furthermore, just half cases were executed regular sanitization.

  • The slope stabilization method is constructed on bedrock, but performance degradation occurs during an impact (earthquake, blasting, etc.) after construction, which may affect service life and factor of safety. In particular, the top-down method implies the possibility of damage caused by blasting vibration due to the construction procedure. However, the current blasting design only reflects damage to nearby facilities, so there is a limit in its ability to assess the damage of reinforcement methods caused by blasting vibration within the scope of influence. In this study, we aim to evaluate problems and damage levels caused by close blasting effects on rock-integrated structures, such as panel-type retaining walls, anchor-combined structures, and small nails, which are mainly constructed using the top-down method. We will also analyze factors affecting long-term performance according to changes in conditions after construction, such as tunnel excavation, to establish optimal design measures.
