A method for damage detection in a plate structure is presented based on strain waves that are generated by impact or damage in the structure. Strain responses from continuous sensors, which are long ribbon-like sensors made from piezoceramic fibers or other materials, were used with a neural network technique to estimate the damage location. The continuous sensor uses only a small number of channels of data acquisition and can cover large areas of the structure. A grid type structural neural system composed of the continuous sensors was developed for effective damage localization in a plate structure. The ratios of maximum strains and arrival times of the maximum strains obtained from the continuous sensors were used as input data to a neural network. Simulated damage localizations on a plate were carried out and the identified damage locations agreed reasonably well with the exact damage locations.

Structural health monitoring along with damage detection and assessment of its severity level in non-accessible reinforced concrete members using piezoelectric materials becomes essential since engineers often face the problem of detecting hidden damage. In this study, the potential of the detection of flexural damage state in the lower part of the mid-span area of a simply supported reinforced concrete beam using piezoelectric sensors is analytically investigated. Two common severity levels of flexural damage are examined: (i) cracking of concrete that extends from the external lower fiber of concrete up to the steel reinforcement and (ii) yielding of reinforcing bars that occurs for higher levels of bending moment and after the flexural cracking. The purpose of this investigation is to apply finite element modeling using admittance based signature data to analyze its accuracy and to check the potential use of this technique to monitor structural damage in real-time. It has been indicated that damage detection capability greatly depends on the frequency selection rather than on the level of the harmonic excitation loading. This way, the excitation loading sequence can have a level low enough that the technique may be considered as applicable and effective for real structures. Further, it is concluded that the closest applied piezoelectric sensor to the flexural damage demonstrates higher overall sensitivity to structural damage in the entire frequency band for both damage states with respect to the other used sensors. However, the observed sensitivity of the other sensors becomes comparatively high in the peak values of the root mean square deviation index.
Majority of the damage in engineering structures is nonlinear. Damage sensitive features (DSFs) extracted by traditional methods from linear time series models cannot effectively handle nonlinearity induced by structural damage. A new DSF is proposed based on vector space cosine similarity (VSCS), which combines K-means cluster analysis and Bayesian discrimination to detect nonlinear structural damage. A reference autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model is built based on measured acceleration data. This study first considers an existing DSF, residual standard deviation (RSD). The DSF is further advanced using the VSCS, and then the advanced VSCS is classified using K-means cluster analysis and Bayes discriminant analysis, respectively. The performance of the proposed approach is then verified using experimental data from a three-story shear building structure, and compared with the results of existing RSD. It is demonstrated that combining the linear ARMA model and the advanced VSCS, with cluster analysis and Bayes discriminant analysis, respectively, is an effective approach for detection of nonlinear damage. This approach improves the reliability and accuracy of the nonlinear damage detection using the linear model and significantly reduces the computational cost. The results indicate that the proposed approach is potential to be a promising damage detection technique.

In this study, an investigation of a damage detection methodology for global condition assessment is presented. A particular emphasis is put on the utilization of wireless sensors for more practical, less time consuming, less expensive and safer monitoring and eventually maintenance purposes. Wireless sensors are deployed with a sensor roving technique to maintain a dense sensor field yet requiring fewer sensors. The time series analysis method called ARX models (Auto-Regressive models with eXogeneous input) for different sensor clusters is implemented for the exploration of artificially induced damage and their locations. The performance of the technique is verified by making use of the data sets acquired from a 4-span bridge-type steel structure in a controlled laboratory environment. In that, the free response vibration data of the structure for a specific sensor cluster is measured by both wired and wireless sensors and the acceleration output of each sensor is used as an input to ARX model to estimate the response of the reference channel of that cluster. Using both data types, the ARX based time series analysis method is shown to be effective for damage detection and localization along with the interpretations and conclusions.
This paper proposes a baseline-free SHM technique in which the time-reversal process of Lamb waves and the imaging method are used. The proposed SHM technique has three distinct features when compared with the authors' previously proposed one: (1) It use the reconstructed signal for damage diagnosis, without need to extract the damage signal as the difference between reconstructed signal and initial input signal; (2) It use the imaging method based on the time-offlight information from the reconstructed signal, instead of using a pattern comparison method; (3) In order to make the damage image more clear, the modified mathematical definition of damage image in a pixel is used. The proposed SHM technique is evaluated through the damage detection experiment for an aluminum plate with damage at different locations.
Automated damage detection through Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques has become an active area of research in the bridge engineering community but widespread implementation on in-service infrastructure still presents some challenges. In the meantime, visual inspection remains as the most common method for condition assessment even though collected information is highly subjective and certain types of damage can be overlooked by the inspector. In this article, a Frequency Response Functions-based model updating algorithm is evaluated using experimentally collected data from the University of Central Florida (UCF)-Benchmark Structure. A protocol for measurement selection and a regularization technique are presented in this work in order to provide the most well-conditioned model updating scenario for the target structure. The proposed technique is composed of two main stages. First, the initial finite element model (FEM) is calibrated through model updating so that it captures the dynamic signature of the UCF Benchmark Structure in its healthy condition. Second, based upon collected data from the damaged condition, the updating process is repeated on the baseline (healthy) FEM. The difference between the updated parameters from subsequent stages revealed both location and extent of damage in a "blind" scenario, without any previous information about type and location of damage.

This paper presents hybrid structural damage monitoring system which performs both global damage assessment of structure and damage detection of local structural joints. Hybrid damage monitoring system is composed of vibration-based technique and electro/mechanic impedance technique. Vibration-based technique detects global characteristic change ot structure using modal characteristic change of structure, and electro/mechanical impedance technique detects damage existence of local structural joints using impedance change of PZT sensor. For the verification of the proposed hybrid monitoring system, a series of damage scenarios are designed to loosened bolts situations of the structural joints, and acceleration response and impedance response signatures are measured. The proposed hybrid monitoring system is implemented to monitor global damage-state and local damages in structural joints.

Stiffness estimation of a shear building due to local damages is usually achieved though structural analysis based on the assumed material properties and idealized numerical modeling of structure. Conventional numerical modeling, however, frequently causes an inevitable error in the structural response and this makes it difficult to exactly predict the damage state in structure. To solve this problem, this paper introduces a damage detection technique for shear building using genetic algorithm. The introduced algorithm evaluates the damage in structure using a flexibility matrix since the flexibility matrix can exactly be obtained from the field test in spite of using a few lower dynamic modes of structure. The introduced algorithm is expected to be more effectively used in damage detection of structures rather than conventional method using the stiffness matrix. Moreover, even in cases when an accurate measurement of structural stiffness cannot be expected, the proposed technique makes it possible to estimate the absolute change in stiffness of the structure on the basis of genetic algorithm. The validity of the proposed technique is demonstrated though numerical analysis using OPENSEES.

For several decades many researchers have studied various algorithms, known as non-destructive testing, to identify abnormalities within a structure. Damage detection technique using vibration signal is a kind of these methods. Many researchers have published lots of papers dealing vibration signal to identify structural damage. All the methods for damage detection using vibration signal can be divided into two big categories. The first category is the method that requires some reference model such as finite element model, and the second is the method that does not require any reference model but needs only experimental data. This paper will be devoted to classify damage detection methods that utilize vibration signal.
For health monitoring purpose usually the structure is instrumented with a large scale and multichannel measurement system. In case of highway bridges, operating vehicle could be utilized to reduce the number of measuring devices. First this paper presents a static damage detection algorithm of using operating vehicle load. The technique has been validated by finite element simulation and simple laboratory test. Next the paper presents an approach of using this technique to field application. Here operating vehicle load data has been used by instrumenting the bridge at single location. This approach gives an upper hand to other sophisticated global damage detection methods since it has the potential of reducing the measuring points and devices. It also avoids the application of artificial loading and interruption of any traffic flow.
