Fracture models and criteria of adhesive with two parameters, namely $G_C$ and ${\sigma}_{max}$, have been developed to describe the fracture process of adhesive joints. Cohesive zone model(CZM) is a representative two parameter failure criteria approach. In CZM, ${\sigma}_{max}$ is a critical, limiting maximum value of the stress in the damage zone ahead of the crack and is assumed to have some physical significance in adhesive failure. Based on CZM and finite element analysis method, the relationship between fracture load and adhesive properties, as $G_{IC)$ and $({\sigma}_{max})_I$, was investigated in adhesively bonded joint tensile test and T-peel test. The two parameters in tensile mode loading were evaluated by using the relationship. The value of $G_{\IC}$ evaluated by proposed method showed close agreement with analytical solution for tapered double cantilever beam(TDCB) test which proposed in an ASTM standard.
Estimation of fracture initiation pressure is one of the most difficult technical challenges in hydraulic fracturing treatment of vertical or horizontal oil wells. In this study, the influence of in-situ stresses and pore pressure values on fracture initiation pressure and its profile in vertical and horizontal oil wells in a normal stress regime have been investigated. Cohesive elements with traction-separation law (XFEM-based cohesive law) are used for simulating the fracturing process in a fluid-solid coupling finite element model. The maximum nominal stress criterion is selected for initiation of damage in the cohesive elements. The stress intensity factors are verified for both XFEM-based cohesive law and analytical solution to show the validation of the cohesive law in fracture modeling where the compared results are in a very good agreement with less than 1% error. The results showed that, generally by increasing the difference between the maximum and minimum horizontal stress, the fracture pressure and its profile has been strongly changed in the vertical wells. Also, it's been clearly observed that in a horizontal well drilled in the direction of minimum horizontal stress, the values of fracture pressure have been significantly affected by the difference between overburden pressure and maximum horizontal stress. Additionally, increasing pore pressure from under-pressure regime to over-pressure state has made a considerable fall on fracture pressure in both vertical and horizontal oil wells.
On mesoscopic level, concrete can be treated as a three-phase composite material consisting of mortar, aggregates and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between mortar and aggregate. A lot of research has confirmed that ITZ plays a crucial role in the mechanical fracture process of concrete. The aim of the present study is to propose a numerical method on mesoscale to analyze the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under mechanical loading, and then it will help precisely predict the damage or the cracking initiation and propagation of concrete. Concrete is meshed by means of the Rigid Body Spring Model (RBSM) concept, while the reinforcing steel bars are modeled as beam-type elements. Two kinds of RC members, i.e. subjected to uniaxial tension and beams under bending, the fracture process of concrete and the distribution of cracks, as well as the load-deflection relationships are investigated and compared with the available test results. It is found that the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental observations, indicating that the model can successfully simulate the failure process of the RC members.

The potential damage region of a WC-Co cemented carbide die is investigated for cold forging process of a wheel-nut by numerical simulation with its chemical composition considered. Numerical simulation is utilized to calculate internal stress, especially for the WC-Co die, during the forging process. Finite element model is established, in which the elasto-plastic properties are applied to the work-piece of bulk steel, and elastic properties are considered for the lower die insert of the WC-Co alloy. This stress analysis enables to distinguish the potential damage regions of the WC-Co die. The regions from calculation are comparatively analyzed along with the crack area observed in the die after repetitive manufacturing. Effect of chemical composition of the WC-Co is also evaluated on characteristics of potential damage region of the die with variance of mechanical properties considered. Derived from Mohr-Coulomb fracture model, furthermore, a new stress index is presented and used for die stress analysis. This index inherently considers hydrostatic pressure and is then capable of deducing wide range of its distribution for representing stress state by modification of its parameter implying pressure sensitivity.

A method using cutting force signal and neural network for detection tool damage is proposed. Cutting force signal is gained by tool dynamometer and the signal is prepocessed to normalize. Cutting force signal is changed by tool state. When tool damage is occurred, cutting force signal goes up in comparison with that in normal state. However, the signal goes down in case of catastrophic fracture. These features are memorized in neural network through nomalizing couse. A new nomalizing method is introduced in this paper. Fist, cutting forces are sumed up except data smaller than threshold value, which is the cutting force during non-cutting action. After then, the average value is found by dividing by the number of data. With backpropagation training process, the neural network memorizes the feature difference of cutting force signal between with and without tool damage. As a result, the cutting force can be used in monitoring the condition of cutting tool and neural network can be used to classify the cutting force signal with and without tool damage.
Two kinds of failure model, that is, the Gurson model and a shear failure model were used for the finite element analyses of simple and notch tensile specimens and axial compression of a fracture tube with initial saw-cuts. The parameter values for the shear failure model were determined by a combined experimental and numerical analysis of the notch tensile specimens. After fitting the numerical parameters such as the yielding stress and the fracture shear strains, the Gurson model and the shear failure model were applied to the analysis of the fracture tube. Although the Gurson model and the shear failure model showed similar fracture behavior for the case of the tensile specimens, the respective results were different in the axial force and the crack growth rate of the fracture tube. That is, the shear failure model required more axial force to make the cracks propagate along the tube than the Gurson model. These are believed to show the lack of damage evolution process of the shear failure model. To decide which model is better in the tube analysis, experimental verification will be necessary.
To obtain the dynamic mechanical properties, fracture modes, energy and brittleness characteristics of Furong Baijiao coal rock, the dynamic impact compression tests under 0, 4, 8 and 12 MPa confining pressure were carried out using the split Hopkinson pressure bar. The results show that failure mode of coal rock in uniaxial state is axial splitting failure, while it is mainly compression-shear failure with tensile failure in triaxial state. With strain rate and confining pressure increasing, compressive strength and peak strain increase, average fragmentation increases and fractal dimension decreases. Based on energy dissipation theory, the dissipated energy density of coal rock increases gradually with growing confining pressure, but it has little correlation with strain rate. Considering progressive destruction process of coal rock, damage variable was defined as the ratio of dissipated energy density to total absorbed energy density. The maximum damage rate was obtained by deriving damage variable to reflect its maximum failure severity, then a brittleness index BD was established based on the maximum damage rate. BD value declined gradually as confining pressure and strain rate increase, indicating the decrease of brittleness and destruction degree. When confining pressure rises to 12 MPa, brittleness index and average fragmentation gradually stabilize, which shows confining pressure growing cannot cause continuous damage. Finally, integrating dynamic deformation and destruction process of coal rock and according to its final failure characteristics under different confining pressures, BD value is used to classify the brittleness into four grades.

One of the recent changes in machining technology is rapid application of micro- and high precision grinding processes. A fine groove generation is necessary for the fabrication of optics, electronics and semiconductor parts. Slot grinding is very efficient for the generation of micro ordered groove with hard and brittle materials. In the process of slot grinding, chipping at the sharp edges and microcracks of the ground grooves are inevitable defects. Chipping should be reduced for the improvement of surface integrity. Mechanical contact with diamond grits causes microcracks at the grooves. This damage resides subsurface, and can be the cause of failure of the punch die. This paper deals with chipping generation at the sharp edges, surface integrity of side groove and fracture strength is related to the microcracks in the slot grinding.
Coal samples with different joints morphology were subjected to uniaxial compression experiments, cracks evolution was recorded by Nikon D5300 and acoustic emission (AE) energy signals were collected by AEwin Test for Express-8.0. During loading process, coal samples deformed elastically with no obvious cracks changes, then they expanded gradually along the trace of the original cracks, accompanied by the formation of secondary cracks, and eventually produced a large-scale fracture. It was more interesting that the failure mode of samples were all shear shape, whatever the original cracks morphology was. With cracks and damage evolution, AE energy radiated regularly. At the early loading stage, micro damage and small scale fracture events only induced a few AE events with less energy, while large scale fracture leaded to a number of AE events with more energy at the later stage. Based on the multifractal theory, the multifractal spectrum could explain AE energy signals frequency responses and the causes of AE events with load. Multifractal spectrum width (${\Delta}{\alpha}$), could reflect the differences between the large and small AE energy signals. And another parameter (${\Delta}f$) could reflect the relationship between the frequency of the least and greatest signals in the AE energy time series. This research is helpful for us to understand cracks evolution and AE energy signals causes.

Fatigue is a process of progressive permanent internal structural change in a material subjected to repeitive stresses. These change may be damaging and result in progressive growth of cracks and complete fracture if the stress repetitins are sufficiently large. For structural members subjected to cyclic loads, the continuous and irrecoverable damage processes are taking place. These processes are referred as the cumulative damage processes due to fatigue loading. Moreover, increased use of high strength concrete makes the fatigue problem more important because the cross-section and dead weight are reduced by using high strength concrete. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to shear reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength under repeated loadings. For this purpose, comprehensive static and fatigue tests of reinforced concrete beams were conducted. The major test variables for the fatigue teats are the concrete strength and the amount of shear reinforcements. The increase of deflections and steel strains according to load repetition has been plotted and analyzed to explore the damage accumulation phenomena of reinforced concrete beams. An analytical model for shear fatigue behavior has been introduced to analyze the damage accumulation under fatigue loads. The failure mode and fatigue lives have been also studied in the present study. The comparisons between analytical results and experimental data show good correlation.
