To estimate the sediment discharge controlled by sediment-filled check-dam and thereby enhancing factor for check-dam design and dredging criteria, we surveyed slope failures and stream-bed fluctuation caused by geomorphic disturbances (i.e., landslides and debris flows) in Inje, Gangwondo. In general, check-dams play roles for restraining and controlling sediment discharge within a section under the design equilibrium gradient and a section under the design flood gradient, respectively. The results in this study showed same pattern: that is, the closed type check-dam, which has a design restraint sediment discharge of $2,111m^3$, estimated to control a sediment discharge of $3,996m^3$ in the stream section within 250 m right upper area immediately after the disturbances occurred in 2006. As a result, a design control sediment discharge of the check-dam was larger than its design restraint sediment discharge. This represents that the check-dam is still having an own function for controlling sediment discharge although it exceeded the designed capacity by the sediment discharged from upstream during the disturbances. Our finding suggests that the sediment discharge controlling of check-dam may need to be evaluated separately from its sediment discharge restraint. Currently, the country, however, does not consider the design control (or restraint) sediment discharges, based on the actual field survey, as criteria for check-dam design and/or dredging work. Therefore, the accumulation of the quantitative data is required to support that check-dam has functions for both restraining and controlling sediment discharge. This would be a way to develop our erosion control technology to the scientific technology equipped with a more objective and systematic aspects.
The assessment of seismic behavior and seismic performance of ageing Sarıyar concrete gravity dam constructed on Sakarya River in Türkiye is the main focus of this paper. For this purpose, the impact of sediment domain, ageing of concrete material under the impact of chemical and mechanical actions, and dam-water-sediment interaction are included in the two-dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) model developed in FORTRAN 90 environment. In the FE model, the dam and age dependent sediment domains are modeled by solid elements, while reservoir domain is modeled by Lagrangian fluid elements. The radiation of reflected waves to the unbounded water domain is modeled by infinite Lagrangian fluid elements, while unbounded sediment domain is modeled by infinite solid elements. The coupled system was assumed to be under the simultaneous impact of Vertical (V) and Horizontal (H) ingredients of 1976 Koyna earthquake and the coupled system was analyzed in Laplace domain by direct method. Due to the deterioration of the concrete, the H and V displacement responses together with the fundamental period of the body, elongate throughout the lifetime and this reduce the seismic safety of the dam. It was deduced that the ageing dam body will not experience major damages under the Koyna earthquake both at the earlier and later ages. Furthermore, at the heel of the dam, the hydrodynamic pressure responses are decreased by rising the sediment domain depth.

Since the global warming causes debris flow damage has increased in Kangwon Area, Sediment control dam have increasingly founded to protect the damage. In spite of the realities design methods are well not established to determine type of the dam, design parameters and maintenance. Through comparison for design methods to sediment control dam in Korea, it raised some points to improve to correspond with realities. In addition, it pointed that some issues for the sediment control dams in Kangwon Area. Those are shown that unclear positions of the dams, unremoval of sediment, occurrence of seepage under the dams and uninstallation of roads to remove sediment. In addition, the countermeasure for the issues are proposed.

While estuarine dams can develop freshwater resources and block the salt intrusion, they can result in increased sediment deposition in the estuary. The mechanism of increased sediment deposition in an estuary with an estuary dam is not well understood. To fill this knowledge gap, 7 ADCP measurements of flow and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) were collected along-channel in an estuary with an estuarine dam over a neap-spring cycle. Flow and SSC were used to calculate the sediment flux and sediment flux gradients. The results indicated that the cumulative sediment fluxes at all stations were directed landward. The along-channel sediment flux gradient was negative, which indicated deposition along the channel. The landward mean-flow fluxes were dominant in the deep portion of the channel near the estuary mouth, whereas landward correlation fluxes were dominant in the shallow portion of the channel near the estuarine dam. The tides were the dominant forcing driving the sediment fluxes throughout the estuary.

Landslide dam failure presents as a severe natural disaster due to its adverse impact to people and property. If the landslide dams failed, the discharge of a huge volume of both water and sediment could result in a catastrophic flood in the downstream area. In most of previous studies, breaching process used to be considered as a constructed dam, rather than as a landslide dam. Their erosion rate was assumed to relate to discharge by a sediment transport equation. However, during surface erosion of landslide dam, the sediment transportation regime is greatly dependent on the slope surface and the sediment concentration in the flow. This study aims to accurately simulate the outflow hydrograph caused by landslide dam by overtopping through a 2D surface flow erosion/deposition model. The lateral erosion velocity in this model was presented as a function of the shear stress on the side wall. The simulated results were then compared and it was coherent with the results obtained from the experiments.

In this study sediments reduction effects on dam have been analyzed in the case of check dam installation in the upstream. Analyzed sediment reduction effects of 27 points conducted for 10 multi-purposes dam, which is target of this study. According to regression analysis result, Sediment reduction effect by installing check dam has shown inclination which increase as area ratio rises. According to analysis result, sediment reduction effect was greatest in Geum-river point at Daecheong-dam. The life-time is estimated to increases about 60% by installing check dams. When Area ratio increases, it was deduced through regression analysis that rise Sediment Reduction Effect by installing check dam. This study can be useful for the management and design plans like the dam's site or priority for placing. Furthermore, it would be able to construct an efficient sand depositing dam if complementary is provided by being considered catchment area and lucrative property.

This study examined how to determine the optimal sediment level in dam reservoir for efficient plan and operation of dam. Currently, Korea is applying a horizontally accumulated method for sediment level estimation for the safety design of dam and so the method estimated relatively higher level than others. However, the sediment level of dam reservoir should be accurately estimated because it is an important factor in assessing life cycle of a dam. The sediment level in dam reservoir can be determined by SED-2D model linked with RMA-2, horizontally accumulated method, area increment method, and empirical area reduction method. The estimated sediment level from each method was compared with the observed sediment level measured in 2007 in Imha dam reservoir, Korea and then the optimal method was determined. Also, the future sediment level was predicted by each method for the future trend analysis of sediment level. As the results, the most accurate sediment level was estimated by the empirical area reduction method and the future trend of sediment level variation followed the past trend. Therefore, we have found that the empirical area reduction method is a proper one for more accurate estimation of sediment level and it can be validated by the results from a numerical model of SED-2D linked with RMA-2 model.
The objective of this study Is to supply basic data for large reservoir sedimentation research In future and make suggestions to maintain and opera능 the reservoir more of efficiently. At first, previous studios about the estimation of sediment yield rate were reviewed in Korea. And the discharge rating curves of upstream stage gauging stations and the correlation between dam Inflow and stage discharge were analyzed. With the analysis results, the spec유c sediment rate of Soyanggang dam was estimated as 608 m3/km2/yr. It was similar to that of Soyanggang dam feasibility study and 1994's field surveys of the reservoir than that of 1983's field surveys. Because the sediment rating curves were derived under the low discharge conditions, It needs to be checked under the flood conditions. However, the suggested methods such as flowrate analysis and sediment estimation will be useful to the sediment studios In future. Key words . reservoir sediment, sediment yield rate, rating curve, flowrate analysis.

Land use and climate changes are the important factors to determine the runoff and sediment loads from the watershed. The changes also affected to runoff volume/pattern to the dam operation and may cause flood and drought situations in the downstream area. Sirikit Dam is one of the biggest dams in Thailand which cover about 25 % of the runoff into the Central Plain where the Bangkok Capital is located. The study aims to determine the effect of land use change to the runoff/sediment volume pattern and the rainfall-runoff-sediment relationship in the different land use type. Field measurements of the actual rainfall, runoff and sediment in the selected four sub-basins with different type of land use in the Upper Nan Basin were conducted and the runoff ratio coefficients and sediment yield were estimated for each sub-basin. The effect of the land use change (deforestation) towards runoff/sediment will be investigated. The study of the climate change impact on the runoff in the future scenarios was conducted to project the change of runoff volume/pattern into the Sirikit Dam. The improvement of the Sirikit Dam operation rule was conducted to reduce the weakness of the existing operation rules after Floods 2011. The newly proposed dam operation rule improvement will then be evaluated from the water shortage situations in the downstream of Sirikit Dam under various conditions of changes of both land use and climate when compared with the situations based on the existing reservoir operation rules.

Estuarine dams are a recent and global phenomenon. While estuarine dams can provide the benefit of improved freshwater resources, they can also alter estuarine processes. Due to the wide range of estuarine types and estuarine dam configurations, the effect of estuarine dams on estuaries is not well understood in general. To develop a systematic understanding of the effect of estuarine dam location and freshwater discharge interval on a range of estuarine types (strongly stratified, partially mixed, periodically stratified, and well-mixed), this study used a coupled hydrodynamic-sediment dynamic numerical model (COAWST) and compared flow, sediment transport, and morphological conditions in the pre- and post-dam estuaries. For each estuarine type, scenarios with dam locations at 20, 55 and 90 km from the mouth and discharge intervals of a discharge every 0.5, 3, and 7 days were investigated. The results were analyzed in terms of change in tide, river discharge, estuarine classification, and sediment flux mechanism. The estuarine dam location primarily affected the tide-dominated estuaries, and the resonance length was an important length scale affecting the tidal currents and Stokes return flow. When the location was less than the resonance length, the tidal currents and Stokes return flow were most reduced due to the loss of tidal prism, the dead-end channel, and the shift from mixed to standing tides. The discharge interval primarily affected the river-dominated estuaries, and the tidal cycle period was an important time scale. When the interval was greater than the tidal cycle period, notable seaward discharge pulses and freshwater fronts occurred. Dams located near the mouth with large discharge interval differed the most from their pre-dam condition based on the estuarine classification. Greater discharge intervals, associated with large discharge magnitudes, resulted in scour and seaward sediment flux in the river-dominated estuaries, and the dam located near the resonance length resulted in the greatest landward tidal pumping sediment flux and deposition in the tide-dominated estuaries.
