  • Mature cystic teratoma is a common ovarian lesion, approximately 10-20% of ovarian tumor. However, it can undergo a malignant transformation, but incidence of malignant transformation is very low. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of malignant transformation in the mature cystic teratoma. Preoperative diagnosis of malignant transformation in the mature cystic teratoma is very difficult, because malignant transformed tissues are very small in the mature cystic teratoma components. And so most of the carcinoma arising in mature cystic teratoma were diagnosed after histologic examination. We experienced a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in the mature cystic teratoma of the ovary and report a case with a brief review of the literatures.

  • Holstein cows being raised in the Kangweon district were examined on the breeding status and occurrence of reproductive disorder. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The cows above six years old in the alpine area were raised more than those in high level zone and plate zone. 2. A total of 1,350 Holstein cows were examined on the breeding status. They were 71.9% conceived cows, 7.9% of uncertain1$\frac{1}{2}$ regnancy, 7.0 of physiological vacancy and 13.3 of reproductive disorder. 3. The percentage of cows conceived by 1, 2, 3 and more than 4 times of A.I. was 49.9, 29.2, 13.3 and 7.6, respectively. 4. In the nutritional condition of infertile coes, excellent, good, fair and poor were 6.7, 30.2, 34.1 and 29.1, respectively. In the good and fair nutritional condition, the cows of ovarian syndrome were 15.6% of persistent corpus luteum, and 11.7% of follicular cystic ovary and lutein cystic ovary, respectively. 5. Among 179 inferTile cows, distributions of reproductive disorder were 43.0, 39.1, 3.9, 3.9 and 10.1% in ovary, uterus vagina, oviduct and others, respectively. Ovary showed higher percentage than any other reproductive organs. Among the ovarian syndromes, follicular cystic ovary, lutein cystic ovary and persistent corpus luteum were 28.6, 28.6 and 23.4%, respectively. 6. A cow group of six and seven-year old showed the highest percentage(21.0% and 23.3%) among the age groups in infertile cows. In the syndrome of reproductive disorder, catarrhal endometritis, latent endometritis, follicular cystic ovary and lutein cystic ovary were 14.5, 14.0, 12.3 and 12.3%, respectively. 7. Infertile cows with complex syndrome of genital disease was 31.8%.

  • Mature cystic teratoma, commonly called dermoid cyst, is the most common benign germ cell tumor of the ovary in children. Malignant transformation is rare, approximately 2 %. As laparoscopic procedures are applied widely in pediatric surgery, a female chlid with a mature cystic teratoma may be an ideal candidate for laparoscopic surgery. Two children received laparoscopic operations successfuly for lower abdominal crises, twisted adnexa. There was no operative complication. Laparoscopic approach for ovarian lesions in infancy and childhood appears to be an effective and safe method for diagnosis as well as definitive therapy.

  • Mature cystic teratomas, commonly called dermoid cysts, are the most common benign germ cell tumors of ovary in women of reproductive age. Mature cystic teratoma that constitutes 10-25% of ovarian tumors and 95% of teratoma, is germ cell tumor of the ovary. This occurs frequently in women less than 20 years old, but it can be found upto 10-20% in postmenopausal women. And in women over the age of 50, a mature cystic teratoma is likely to change into malignant form. Traditional surgical methods of mature cystic teratoma treatment include transabdominal cystectomy, oophorectomy, hysterectomy and(or) bilateral salphingooophorectomy. Recently laparoscopic approach replaces transabdominal surgeries in many cases. Vaginal removal of mature cystic teratoma is unique and rare. Compared with laparotomy, transvaginal approach is characterized by shorter hospital stay and lower morbidity rate. Compared with laparoscopic operation, transvaginal approach has advantages of no visible operative scar and lower intra-operative tumor spillage. The decision for surgical methods is related with patients' situations and surgeon's preference. We report 1 case of vaginal removal of mature cystic teratoma as a part of vaginal hysterectomy in old age patient.

  • A case of ovarian teratoma is reported in a 11-year-old female Korean Jindo dog. Grossly, the left ovary was markedly enlarged ($5{\times}4{\times}4 cm in size$) and contained several cystic spaces filled with hairs and yellowish, fragile deratinous material on cross section. Histological observation of the hair and keratin containing cystic structures lined by stratified squamous epithelium, mature adipose tissue, and bone and cartilage is compatible with a diagnosis of ovarian teratoma, pyometra was also present in this dog. This is believed to be the first report on canine ovarian teratoma in Korea.

  • Objective : This study was designed to investigate the effects of Angelicae Gigantis Radix (AGR) on Polycystic Ovary (PCO) induced by Estradiol valerate (EV) in female rats. Methods : We investigated the effects of AGR on Changes in body weights and food and water uptake for 5 weeks. In addition, we examined the effects on ovary weights. Finally, we also observed histopathological changes in PCO rats. Results : Treatment with AGR did not affect body weights, amount of food and water uptake. Administration group of AGR restored body/ovary weight ratio to normal levels, which were lowered by induction of PCO. In histopathological observation, formation of cysts was suppressed in AGR group compared with non-treated control group. Conclusion : These results suggest that AGR can be used for patients with PCO to prevent formation of cystic follicles and malfunction of ovary.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of Gleditsiae Spina (GS) on polycystic ovary (PCO) induced by estradiol valerate in female rats. We investigated the effects of GS on changes in body weights and food and water uptake for 5 weeks. In addition, we also examined the effects on ovary weights. Finally, we observed histopathological changes in PCO rats. Treatment with GS did not affect body weights, amount of food and water uptake compared with non-treated control group. Administration group of GS restored body/ovary weight ratio to normal levels, which were lowered by induction of PCO. In histopathological observation, formation of cysts was suppressed in GS group compared with non-treated control group. • Alteration in ion channel or transporter expression levels affects cell volume which is produced by movement of water and ion across the plasma membrane. In particular, aquaporin (AQP) channels among ion channels play a crucial role in movement of water across the cell membrane. This study was performed to identify whether AQP expression is changed in bovine follicular cystic follicles using microarray, RT-PCR and Western blotting analyses. In microarray data, AQP4 expression was decreased, whereas AQP7 was increased in cystic follicles. Additional experiments were focused on the AQP7 expression increased in cystic follicles. The microarray data was confirmed by semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western blot analysis. AQP7 mRNA and protein expressions were significantly increased in the cystic follicles (p<0.05). Application of estrogen ($10{\mu}g/ml$) to bovine ovarian cells showed a trend of increase in AQP7 expression. From these results, we suggest that the increase in AQP7 expression in cystic follicles may play an important role in movement of water in bovine ovary. In addition, AQP7, a aquaglyceroporin permeating water and glycerol, could be a good target in development of methods for the cryopreservation of bovine ovary.

  • In order to investigate reproductive disorder in dairy cows, 312 uterine from abattroirs and 56 cows from dairy farms were examined. The ovary and uterine were collected from abattroirs and rectal palpation was carried out in the case of reproductive disorder at dairy farm. Microbiological examination was also carried out from the collected samples. 1. Out of 312 ovaria from slaughter-house, cystic ovary and endometritis were classified as 51(16%) and 134(43%), respectively. And of 56 dairy cow from farms, 43(77%) were identifies as endometritis. 2. The main cause of reproductive disorder was classified as hormonal imbalances, endometritis and cystic ovary, singly or in combination. 3. The main causative agents of endometritis was encountered as E coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus sp and Corynebacterium sp. 4. The highest susceptible antibiotics to the isolates was cephalosporin.

  • An 11-year-old poodle bitch was presented for investigation of multicentric mammary masses. Abdominal sonography and radiography demonstrated abnormal enlargement of uterus and ovaries. Blood analysis revealed high progesterone concentration. The ovariohysterectomy and mastectomy were performed. Histopathologically, the mammary masses revealed complex carcinoma-tubulopapillary carcinoma with papillary pattern and tubule pattern. In the uterus, cystic endometrial hyperplasia was observed. Scattered inflammatory cells were observed in the endometrial stroma and mucinous material was protruded from endometrial surface. Also, in the ovaries, bilateral ovary granulosa cell tumor was detected. The bitch made a complete recovery following the ovariohysterectomy and mastectomy. This case was a very rare multiple tumor occurrence with bilateral ovary granulosa cell tumor and mammary complex carcinoma. High progesterone concentration was characterized clinically in the bitch.
