  • We present a new code for solving non-LTE radiative transfer problems in a general grid (RIG). RIG develops from RATRAN code (Hogerheijde & van der Tak 2000) using the Accelerated Monte-Carlo method, and it can cope with line overlap effect among multiple molecular and atomic species. In this algorithm we make grids in arbitrary coordinates adequate to the problem, but, on the other hand, photons propagate in the Cartesian coordinates. For spherical, cylindrical and other well defined coordinate, the problem of tracing photon's path reduces to solving simple quadratic equations. For example, the outflow in the star formation have high dynamic range in scales from a few AU to ~ 0.1 pc and have also cylindrical symmetry. So, we have used (r, ${\alpha}$) coordinate system, where r is the distance from the origin and ${\alpha}$ is z/ R2 in the cylindrical coordinate of (R,z). The (r, ${\alpha}$) coordinate realizes the density - power function of r - and temperature distributions of the problems with smaller numbers of grid than the cylindrical coordinate does, and the former consumes less time to solve the problems than the latter.

  • Cylindrical Cam Mechanism is widely used in the fields of industries, such as machine tool exchangers, textile machinery. This paper proposes a method for manufacturing of cylindrical cam in Multi CNC machining center. Multi CNC machining center has two different types depending on the tilting axis. For the manufacturing procedures. in this paper the location and the orientation of cutter path are defined from shape design data of cam. The integral NC code fur the both types of multi-axis CNC machining center can be created using the coordinates mapping between design coordinates and work coordinates. Finally, CAD/CAM program is developed on $C^{++}$ language. This program can display manufacturing and kinematics simulation, which can make integral NC code for multi-axis CNC machining center of two types.

  • A bipolar junction transistor which exihibits 1000V breakdown voltage is designed and fabricated using FLR (Field Limiting Rings). Three dimensional effects on the breakdown voltage is investigated in the cylindrical coordinate and the simulation results are compared with the results in the rectangular coordinate. Breakdown voltage of the device with 3 FLR is simulated to be 1420V in the cylindrical coordinate while it is 1580V in rectangular coordinate. Bipolar junction transistor has been fabricated using the epitaxial wafer of which resistivity is 86 .OMEGA.cm and thickness is 105 .mu.m. Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ and glass are employed for the passivation. Breakdown of the fabricated device is measured to be 1442V which shows better greement with the simulation results in cylindrical coordination.

  • Cam mechanism is one of the common devices used in many automatic machinery. Specially cylindrical cam generates three dimensional motions. Thus, the shape design procedures must have high accuracy. This paper proposes the shape design procedure for a cylindrical cam and follower mechanism using a relative velocity method. The relative velocity method and the coordinate transformation are used to find a contact point between the cam and the follower. Also, the full shape of the cylindrical cam can be generated by using the geometric relationships and the contact constraints. As a result, this paper presents an example for the shape design of the cylindrical cam in order to prove the accuracy of the design procedures.

  • The stress analysis on orthotropic composite cylindrical shells with one circular or one elliptical cutout subjected to an axial force is carried out by using an analytical and experimental method. The composite cylindrical shell governing equation of the Donnell's type is applied to this study and all results are presented by the stress concentration factor. The stress concentration factor is defined as the ratio of the stress on the region around a cutout to the nominal stress of the shell. The stress concentration factor is classified into the circumferential stress concentration factors and the radial stress concentration factors due to the cylindrical coordinate of which the origin is the center of a cutout. The considered loading condition is only axial tension loading condition. In this study, thus, the maximum stress is induced on perpendicular region against axial direction, on the coordinate. Various cutout sizes are expressed using the radius ratio, (equation omitted), which is the radius of a cutout over one of the cylindrical shell. Experimental results are obtained using strain gages, which are attached around a cutout of the cylindrical shell. As the result from this study, the stress concentration around a cutout can be predicted by using the analytical method for an orthotropic composite cylindrical shell having a circular or an elliptical cutout.

  • In this study, the nondimensional load capacity of water hydrodynamic journal bearings is calculated. A generalized coordinate formulation is applied to handle the complexity of bearing geometry. A window-based analysis program is developed to analysis the cylindrical hydrostatic bearings. Load capacities are calculated according to some design parameters such as clearance, diameter of orifice, size of recesses and temperature. The results are presented and discussed.

  • The mutual radiation impedance was calculated using the spatial convolution in the cylindrical structure. The Cartesian coordinate was transformed into the cylindrical coordinate using the spatial convolution for the cylindrical array structure. This method cannot consider the cylindrical baffle, but can reduce the computation time. The error for not considering the cylindrical baffle was analyzed by the comparison of the spatial convolution method with the quadruple integration method in the cylindrical structure. The mutual radiation resistance in the cylindrical structure was compared with the one in the planar baffle. Based on two kinds of the comparison, we presented the error of the suggesting method in this paper, confirming that the spatial convolution method could be applied to compute the mutual radiation impedance in the cylindrical structure at certain conditions.

  • An analytic nodal expansion method has been derived for the multigroup neutron diffusion equation in 2-D cylindrical(R-Z) coordinate. In this method we used the second order Legendre polynomials for source, and transverse leakage, and then the diffusion eqaution was solved analytically. This formalism has been applied to 2-D LWR model. $textsc{k}$$_{eff}$, power distribution, and computing time have been compared with those of ADEP code(finite difference method). The benchmark showed that the analytic nodal expansion method in R-Z coordinate has good accuracy and quite faster than the finite difference method. This is another merit of using R-Z coordinate in that the transverse integration over surfaces is better than the linear integration over length. This makes the discontinuity factor useless.s.

  • This study concerns a large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flow around a bluff body inside a sudden expansion cylindrical chamber, a configuration which resembles a premixed gas turbine combustor The simulation code is constructed by using the general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The Smagorinsky model is employed and the calculated Reynolds number is 5,000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of the inlet pipe. The combined grid technique and cylindrical grid are tested in the numerical simulation with complex geometry. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with LDV measurement data. The numerical flow visualizations depict the behavior of turbulent mixing process behind the flame holder.
