  • A numerical analysis method was studied to predict the nonlinear behavior of slender double skin composite walls. For convenience in numerical analysis, the model for the double skin composite wall was developed as a macroscopic model that can predict nonlinear behavior with relatively simplified models. For the wall showing flexure-dominant behavior, a multiple layer model was used. Each layer was modeled with composite elements of concrete and steel plate. An X-type truss model was used for coupling beams showing shear-dominant behavior. To describe the cyclic behavior of concrete and steel elements, simplified cyclic models for the materials were proposed. The proposed analysis model was applied to isolated walls and coupled walls with rectangular or T-shaped cross-sections. The analytical results were compared with existing test results.

  • The settlement of a compaction plate resting on the surface of rubble-mound and subjected to a vibrating vertical load can be characterized by a transient amplitude and a plastic settlement. As long as the maximum imposed load does not exceed the bearing capacity of the rubble-mound, plastic settlement will approach an ultimate value and essentially steady-state vibration will ensue. For the settlement behavior by vibro-compaction, most laboratory experiments were conducted on laterally confined samples with loads over the full surface area or on samples placed on a vibrating table. In the field, the loads cover only a small fraction of the surface area. In this study, crushed stones are loaded with the same as field condition. According to the vibro-compaction experiments on crushed stone, it was found that approximately 90% of total settlement occur within 2 minutes and plastic settlement increases with increasing cyclic stress levels including static and dynamic stress. A compaction equation on which the number of load cycles, amplitude of plate, settlement, width of plate, and cyclic stress are related each other is proposed.

  • The results of the analysis of the structural behavior of diagrid nodes that were subjected to cyclic loads such as wind and earthquakes was not fully understood due to difficulties in considering the welding type. In this study, diagrid nodes were tested to determine their behavior when they are subjected to seismic or wind loads. Five specimens were designed and fabricated. The corresponding test parameters were the welding type for each point and the length of the overlap of the side stiffener and the brace web. Tensile force was applied to one diagrid brace member, and compression force was applied to the other diagrid brace member. Cyclic loading was applied until the failure. The test showed that failures are due to axial stress from axial force and the additional bending moment of the two combined axial forces that have different directions. Tensile failure was observed from the tensile force, and local buckling was observed from the compressive force at the flange of the brace member. In addition, the welding type and the length overlap affected the initial stiffness, the yielding stress, and the energy absorption of the diagrid node.

  • Masonry structures have been used throughout the world for the construction of residential buildings. However, from a structural point of view, the masonry material is characterized by a very low tensile strength. Moreover, the bearing and shear capacity of masonry walls have been found to be vulnerable to earthquakes. In this study, to improve the seismic performance of masonry walls, hexagonal blocks were developed and six masonry walls made with hexagonal block were tested to failure under reversed cyclic lateral loading. This paper focuses on an experimental investigation of different types of wall with hexagonal blocks, i.e. walls with different hexagonal blocks and with different reinforcing bar arrangements, subjected to applied cyclic loads. The cracking, damage patterns and hysteretic feature were evaluated. Results from the hexagonal masonry wall were shown more damage reduction and less brittle failure in comparison to the existing rectangular masonry walls.

  • This paper describes the experimental study on the structural behavior of the vertical plane connection between a reinforced concrete wall and a steel plate concrete wall under out-of-plane flexural loads. The specimen was tested under a dynamic test with the use of cyclic loads. As a result of the test, ductile failure mode of vertical bars was shown under a push load and the failure load was more than that of the nominal strength of the specimen. However, the shear failure mode of the connection was confirmed in case of a pull test and thus demonstrates a need for a shear reinforcement.

  • An efficient design concept for earthquake loads, which is called performance based design, has been standard design in USA, Europe and Japan since those countries experienced severe earthquake damage at end of 90's. For general design, struttie model well predicts the strength of the disturbed region, however, it does not provide ductility information at the failure. Therefore, simple tools which are able to predict both the strength and the ductility of RC structures are in demand. 2D lattice model is introduced in this study as an analysis tool for the RC structures subject to earthquake. Experimental correlation studies indicate the 2D lattice model quite well predict the strength as well as the ductility of RC structures.

  • This paper presents a proper parallel control method using a conventional control and a repetitive control for improving the output voltage waveform of uninterruptable power supply. Although first-order prediction control method shows a good characteristics to rectifier load, it is not sufficient to reduce steady state errors generated in nonlinear loads such as rectifier loads and phase controled loads. So we also employed a repetitive control method. A repetitive control method can eliminate steady state errors in the distorted output voltage caused by cyclic loads. The presented control scheme is verified through simulation and experiment. Experimental results Implemented on a single phase PWM inverter equipped with a LC output filter with 3 kVA, 60 Hz are shown.

  • The spacer grid set is a part of a nuclear fuel assembly. The set has a spring and the spring supports the fuel rods safely. Although material nonlinearity is involved in the deformation of the spring, nonlinearity has not been considered in design of the spring. Recently a nonlinear response structural optimization method has been developed using equivalent loads. It is called nonlinear response optimization equivalent loads (NROEL). In NROEL, the external loads are teansformed to the equivalent loads (EL) for linear static analysis and linear response optimization is carried out based on the EL in a cyclic manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. EL is the load set which generates the same response no EL. The objective function is defined by minimizing the maximum stress in the spring while is limited and the support force of the spring is larger than a certain value. The results are verified by nonlinear. ABAQUS is used for nonlinear response analysis and GENESIS is employed for linear response optimization.

  • In this paper, it was compared the characteristics of the stress and settlement that occur from a track on the ground using a model test and has quantitatively analyzed the difference based on stress path and effect of the rotation of principal stress. Under identical roadbed conditions, the settlement generated by moving wheel loads were found to be 6 times and 3 times larger than that from static loads and cyclic loads, respectively. The deviator stress affecting shear deformation and the length of stress path generated by moving loads were twofold or greater increase than those by static loads. Furthermore, the stress path generated by moving loads was approached more closely to Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria compared to that by static loads. Also, it was found that ballasted track was occurred about 60% of maximum stress at $40^{\circ}$ of the rotation angle of principal stress and was affected with rotation of principal stress with moving wheel loading condition.

  • A comparative study on the implant screw loosening under the initial clamping force and cyclic loads was conducted. The experiments were performed to evaluate the screw loosening behavior of the internal and external implant systems. It was found that the screw loosening torques of implant systems were significantly affected by the way how the abutment and fixture were connected due to the difference in the load transfer mechanism between abutment and fixture.
