Objectives: This study was aimed at finding out the current smoking situation of workers in the field of railroad electricity and vehicles and changes of their smoking behaviors after the raise of price of tobacco in 2015. Methods: With a self-administered questionnaire conducted from February 9 to March 6 2015, one-way ANOVA and crosstabs(PASW Statistics Ver. 18.0) were conducted on the data of 626 people. Results: As the result, the smoking rate was 39.1% and 90.5% of the smoking experienced group showed some changes including cutting down on smoking due to raise of price of tobacco. Factors related to smoking included stress, the number of times of drinking, awareness of harmfulness of smoking, the number of days with hard exercise per week and the marital status. Conclusion: Therefore, it is assumed that there is necessity of top-down intervention using these factors to cut down the smoking rate.
The greenhouse hulk curing and drying system utilizing the direct solar energy was tested to see how much fuel could be saved for curing flue-cured tobacco at the Daegu Experiment Station, Korea Tobacco Research Institute (North latitute: 35$^{\circ}$49'), in 1979. The structure consists of transparent fiberglass exterior, polyurethan boards covered with galvanized iron as the heat absorbers and insulation boards, air duct in which the air is introduced to the furnace room of bulk curing barn, and gravel heat storage system. All exterior surface of heat absorbers, air duct, and gravels were coated with black paint. The air temperature and total radiation were 20.5 to 35.5$^{\circ}C$ and 1004.2 to 1436.2 cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$ during the 3 replicated curing tests, respectively. The greenhouse bulk curing and drying system was able to cut fuel consumption by 25 percent compared with the conventional bulk curing barn. The maximum temperatures for the top absorber and the inlet air of the system were 89$^{\circ}C$ and 64$^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the average temperature of inlet air was higher than that of conventional one by 18$^{\circ}C$.
A specific deleted version of ARABIDOPSIS RESPONSE REGULATOR1 (ARR1) lacking the signal receiver domain (1.152 amino acids)-coding sequence, referred to as $ARR1{\Delta}DDK$, was amplified using Arabidopsis thaliana cDNA prepared from adult leaves and transferred into the genome of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Samsun under the transcriptional control of a ${\beta}$-estradiol-inducible expression system. The ectopic expression of $ARR1{\Delta}DDK$ affected the morphology of transgenic seedlings and their segments in vitro. In the presence of an inducer, ${\beta}$-estradiol, ectopic expression of $ARR1{\Delta}DDK$ induced only the formation of soft, pseudo-bulbous tissue in the root tip region of intact seedlings, which appeared similar to callus generated on a hypocotyl segment in the presence of 2,4-D and 6-benzyladenine (BA), both at $1\;{\mu}M$. Those callus tissues on the root tip region could not generate shoots unless $1\;{\mu}M$ BA was supplied. In segment culture, ectopic expression of $ARR1{\Delta}DDK$ induced calluslike tissue around the cut-end of cotyledon and hypocotyl segments with occasional shoot formation, suggesting that the expression of $ARR1{\Delta}DDK$ could substitute for the effects of cytokinin on these segments. Additionally, treatment with only ${\beta}$-estradiol induced NtWUS, a WUS ortholog in tobacco, which was detected during the process of callus tissue formation in the root tip region and also in cotyledon or hypocotyl segments. These findings suggest that the NtWUS might be associated in the transdifferentiation process caused by the functional regulation of $ARR1{\Delta}DDK$ in transgenic tobacco seedlings.
Long-term exposure of cigarette smoke or air pollutants to human can induce damages in the airway mucociliary function and can be closely related to the irritation and sputum formation in the respiratory system. This study was undertaken to investigate whether rat trachea can be used as a tool for evaluating the cigarette smoke quality. It was identified that, through the examination with inverted microscope, ciliary beating in 1 mm long cut of nat trachea ring was continued for at least 48 hours in saline solution at $25^{\circ}C$. The ciliostasis time in a KCN solution as a positive control was decreased with increasing the concentration of KCN. There were no significant differences in the ciliostasis time by body weight and individual variation of rats. Ciliotoxicity of whole smoke trapped in saline was not significantly changed by aging for more than 6 hrs. The ciliostasis time was in inverse proportion to the number of sample cigarettes applied. As moisture in the cigarette was increased, ciliostasis time was linearly increased. Therefore, these data indicate that the ciliotoxicity test using rat trachea in vitro can be applied to evaluate the cigarette smoke quality and to search factors for the irritation and sputum formation by cigarette smoke as well as air pollutants.
To minimize the time ordinarily spent in mono filter cigarette design, we studied the relationship between major seven independant variables ; filament(X1) and total denier(X2), porosity of the aller plug wrap(X3), filter length(X4), Porosity of the tip paper(X5) and cigarette paper(X6) and net weight of the reference cut tobacco(X7). Ninty trial numbers were obtained as a results of using rotatable central composite design and it is analyzed by the multiple regression analysis with stepwise in SAS/pc under restricted conditions. That is, UPD (Y1) = 82.96 - 3.80X1 + 2.50X2 - 3.29X3 - 3.15X5 - 0.83X22 + 1.88X5X6 - 1.38 X5X7(R2: 0.63), EPD(Y2) : 120.91 - 5.70X1 + 3.60X2 + 4.23X4 - 0.93X6 + 4.06X7 (R2=0.84), TVR(Y3) = 49.70 - 0.78X1 + 3.60X3 + 2.00X4 + 4.20X5 - 0.93X6 + 2.64X7 - 1.07X1X2 + 1.0IX1 X3 + 1.05X2X6 + 0.45X22 - 0.64X42 + 1.29X4X6 - 0.97X4X7 - 1.28X5X6 + 1.53X5X7 + 1.39X6X7(R2=0.65), and EVR(Y4) : 3.24-0.21X3-0.20X4 -0.24X5+0.67X6+0.26X4X7 (R2=0.55), where EPD : encapsulated pressure drop, VPD : unencapsulated pressure drop, TVR ; tip ventilation rate, and En : envelope ventilation rate. All variables in the model are significant at the 0.05 level.
Threshold limit value (TLV) test between expert and consumer panel was conducted about absolute, recognition and difference threshold respectively. And we tried to suggest appropriate and minimum acceptable menthol concentration level by consumer panel. Determination of threshold value was based on ASTM E 679-79 method by forced-choice ascending concentration series. In addition, a semi-ascending paired difference method was referred to conduct test. The group threshold value was determined as the value of geometric mean individual threshold. The smokers were dividend by two groups, trained and consumer panel. Trained panel was selected according to sensitivity to menthol discrimination. Consumer panel wasrecruited in proportion as population ratios including female smokers. They were all over twenty years old volunteers and summed up thirty four persons. In terms of sensor evaluation, overall difference test with seven-category scale by both trained and consumer panelists were done. On judging correct or incorrect answer, two by three cut-off levels applied to. Every test was conducted with two sessions, before smoking and during smoking period. And, only two samples served each paneI per test with regard to sensory fatigue and reliable results. All tests were replicated, and in total 32 times per panelist. In conclusion, the recognition threshold about consumer and expert panel was 358 ppm/cig. and 276 ppm/cig. in separately. Besides, absolute and difference thresholds were obtained also. And, we conduct difference threshold test with two different ways, upward and downward. And, The results of each method were 246, 195 ppm/cig., 1414, 1336 ppm/cig. and 1047, 972 ppm/cig.
Seven organophosphorus compounds and three carbamates of some monoterpenoids were synthesized and tested for insecticidal activity to five insects, brown plant happer (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens), green peach aphid (GPA, Myzus persicae), diamond bark moth (DBM, Plutella xylostella), tobacco cut worm (TCW, Spodoptera litura), and two spotted spider mite (TSSM, Tetranychus urticae). With the administration of 500 mg/l concentration thiophosphates of carveol and geraniol showed motality of from 95% to 100% to BPH and DBM. On the other hand, phosphates of menthol, thymol, and borneol had also good to moderate activity to BPH and TSSM insects at the same concentration.

In order to investigate the change of enzyme activities during the fermentation of tobacco leaves, whole and cut leaves were treated for twenty days at $30^{\circ}C$ and $39^{\circ}C$ by the normal procedure and inoculation of yeast, respectively, and the activity of several enzymes was measured at proper intervals. 1) Alpha-amylase activity was steadily decreased with the progress of fermentation. 2) Invertase and catalase activities were steadily decreased until the mid of the period, and then increased again toward the end of the fermentation. The latter enzyme activity showed more marked change than the former. 3) Most of the polyphenol oxidase activity were decreased abruptly in the early stage of the fermentation, and thereafter leveled down slowly. 4) Peroxidase activity was detected throughout the fermentation but no remarkable change was observed. 5) Protease activtty was not detected through the fermentation period.
Background: Although nicotine dependence plays a role as a main barrier for smoking cessation, there is still a lack of solid evidence on the validity of biomarkers to determine nicotine dependence in clinical settings. This study aimed to investigate whether urinary cotinine levels could reflect the severity of nicotine dependence in active smokers. Materials and Methods: Data regarding general characteristics and smoking status was collected using a self-administered smoking questionnaire. The Fagerstr$\ddot{o}$m test for nicotine dependence (FTND) was used to determine nicotine dependence of the participants, and a total of 381 participants were classified into 3 groups of nicotine dependence: low (n=205, 53.8%), moderate (n=127, 33.3%), and high dependence groups (n=49, 12.9%). Stepwise multiple linear regression model and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves analyses were used to determine the validity of urinary cotinine for high nicotine dependence. Results: In correlation analysis, urinary cotinine levels increased with FTND score (r=0.567, P<0.001). ROC curves analysis showed that urinary cotinine levels predicted the high-dependence group with reasonable accuracy (optimal cut-off value=1,000 ng/mL; AUC=0.82; P<0.001; sensitivity=71.4%; specificity=74.4%). In stepwise multiple regression analysis, the total smoking period (${\beta}$=0.042, P=0.001) and urinary cotinine levels (${\beta}$=0.234, P<0.001) were positively associated with nicotine dependence, whereas an inverse association was observed between highest education levels (>16 years) and nicotine dependence (${\beta}$=-0.573, P=0.034). Conclusions: The results of this study support the validity of using urinary cotinine levels for assessment of nicotine dependence in active smokers.
This study was conducted to find out the stalk curing methods that can reduce photobleaching, and shorten the curing period in burley to bacco stalk curing. The results obtained summarized as follows. In the ventilation window-plot, the temperature within the curing house was high and the curing period was shortened, too. The rate of photobleached leaves of whole plant stalk curing-plot was higher than those of any other plots. In the ventilation window-plot, the labor of operating the curing house was saved and the yield and visual quality of cured leaves were high, too. For reducing the photobleaching of leaves, following procedures are desirable; to prevent the lower leaves from drying up and overripening at maturing stage, cut the stalk after first or second priming, shorten the curing period as possible when the 80% of leaf bodies changed brown.
