Thermal response induced from nonlinear temperature distribution in composite box gilder bridges depends on several variables(environmental conditions, physical and material properties, location and orientation of bridge, and cross-section geometry). In this paper, parametric study are conducted in order to find the effects of variations of seasons, location and orientation of bridge, sectional geometry and some material properties on the axial deformation, curvature and stresses in composite box girder bridge. A two-dimensional transient finite element model to conduct this parametric studies is briefly presented. Firstly, the effects of the parameters on the diurnal variation of curvature are considered, and for the time of maximum curvature, on the distribution of temperature and stresses of composite box girder sectional are considered. Finally, some considerations about the influence of the parameters on the daily maximum values of axial deformation, curvature and stresses are carried out. The influence of thermal effect on structures is important as much as the influence of live or dead load in some cases. In the design of steel composite bridges, the thermal stresses calculated on the supposition that the temperature difference between the concrete slab and steel girder is $10^{\circ}C$ and the temperature distributions are uniform in concrete slab and steel girder can be underestimated.

Through the 1982 Urahawa-ohi and the 1995 Kobe earthquakes, a number of bridge columns were observed to develop a flexural-shear failure due to the bond slip as a consequence of premature termination of the column longitudinal reinforcement. Because the seismic behavior of RC bridge piers is largely dependent on the performance of the plastic hinge legion of RC bridge piers, it is desirable that the seismic capacity of RC bridge pier is to evaluate as a curvature ductility. The provision for the lap splice of longitudinal steel was not specified in KHBDS(Korea Highway Bridge Design Specification) before the implementation of 1992 seismic design code, but the lap splice of not more than 50%, longitudinal reinforcement was newly allowed in the 2005 version of the KHBDS. The objective of this research is to investigate the distribution and ductility of the curvature of RC bridge column with the lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge legion. Six (6) specimens were made in 600 mm diameter with an aspect ratio of 2.5 or 3.5. These piers were cyclically subjected to the quasi-static loads with the uniform axial load of $P=0.1f_{ck}A_g$. According to the slip failure of longitudinal steels of the lap spliced specimen by cyclic loads, the curvatures of the lower and upper parts of the lap spliced region were bigger and smaller than the corresponding paris of the specimen without a lap splice, respectively. Therefore, the damage of the lap spliced test column was concentrated almost on the lower part of the lap spliced region, that appeared io be failed in flexure.

Curved steel-concrete composite box girder has been widely adopted in urban overpasses and ramp bridges. In order to investigate its mechanical behavior under complicated and combined bending, shear and torsion load, two large-curvature composite box girders with interior angles of 25° and 45° were tested under static hogging moment. Based on the strain and deflection measurement on critical cross-sections during the static loading test, the failure mode, cracking behavior, load-displacement relationship, and strain distribution in the steel plate and rebar were investigated in detail. The test result showed the large-curvature composite box girders exhibited notable shear lag in the concrete slab and steel girder. Also, the constraint torsion and distortion effect caused the stress measured at the inner side of the composite beam to be notably higher than that of the outer side. The strain distribution in the steel web was approximately linear; therefore, the assumption that the plane section remains plane was approximately validated based on strain measurement at steel web. Furthermore, the full-process non-linear elaborate finite element (FE) models of the two specimens were developed based on commercial FE software MSC.MARC. The modeling scheme and constitutive model were illustrated in detail. Based on the comparison between the FE model and test results, the FE model effectively simulated the failure mode, the load-displacement curve, and the strain development of longitudinal rebar and steel girder with sufficient accuracy. The comparison between the FE model and the test result validated the accuracy of the developed FE model.

In this study, the effect of nozzle performance according to the selection of the center line equation. Three of S-type nozzles and three of double S-type nozzles were designed using the curve equation and design parameters, and the nozzle shielding performance was evaluated using the shielding ratio definition. In order to analyze the internal flow of the nozzle, the characteristics of the velocity distribution and pressure distribution were studied, and the nozzle performance was evaluated through the total thrust ratio(f) and the nozzle insulation efficiency coefficient(η). On the other hand, the centerline with a sharply change in curvature at the entrance has a low nozzle performance and a high shielding rate. The double S-type nozzle is excellent nozzle performance and shielding rate by using a smooth centerline at the first curvature.
In the present paper an analytical model was developed to study the non-linear vibrations of Functionally Graded Carbon Nanotube (FG-CNT) reinforced doubly-curved shallow shells using the Multiple Scales Method (MSM). The nonlinear partial differential equations of motion are based on the FGM shallow shell hypothesis, the non-linear geometric Von-Karman relationships, and the Galerkin method to reduce the partial differential equations associated with simply supported boundary conditions. The novelty of the present model is the simultaneous prediction of the natural frequencies and their mode shapes versus different curvatures (cylindrical, spherical, conical, and plate) and the different types of FG-CNTs. In addition to combining the vibration analysis with optimization algorithms based on the genetic algorithm, a design optimization methode was developed to maximize the natural frequencies. By considering the expression of the non-dimensional frequency as an objective optimization function, a genetic algorithm program was developed by valuing the mechanical properties, the geometric properties and the FG-CNT configuration of shallow double curvature shells. The results obtained show that the curvature, the volume fraction and the types of NTC distribution have considerable effects on the variation of the Dimensionless Fundamental Linear Frequency (DFLF). The frequency response of the shallow shells of the FG-CNTRC showed two types of nonlinear hardening and softening which are strongly influenced by the change in the fundamental vibration mode. In GA optimization, the mechanical properties and geometric properties in the transverse direction, the volume fraction, and types of distribution of CNTs have a considerable effect on the fundamental frequencies of shallow double-curvature shells. Where the difference between optimized and not optimized DFLF can reach 13.26%.
Realistic assessment of the performance of reinforced concrete structural members like columns is needed for designing new structures or maintenance of the existing structural members. This assessment requires analytical capability of employing proper material models and cyclic rules and considering various load and displacement patterns. A computer application was developed to analyze the non-linear, cyclic flexural performance of reinforced concrete structural members under various types of loading paths including non-sequential variations in axial load and bi-axial cyclic load or displacement. Different monotonic material models as well as hysteresis rules, were implemented in a fiber-based moment-curvature and in turn force-deflection analysis, using proper assumptions on curvature distribution along the member, as in plastic-hinge models. Performance of the program was verified against analytical results by others, and accuracy of the analytical process and the implemented models were evaluated in comparison to the experimental results. The computer application can be used to predict the response of a member with an arbitrary cross section and various type of lateral and longitudinal reinforcement under different combinations of loading patterns in axial and bi-axial directions. On the other hand, the application can be used to examine analytical models and methods using proper experimental data.
This paper summarizes an experimental and analytical study on the seismic behavior of high strength reinforced concrete columns under cyclic loading. In total six cantilever columns with different sizes and concrete compressive strengths were tested. Three columns, small size, had a $325{\times}325$ mm cross section and the three other columns, medium size, were $520{\times}520$ mm. Concrete compressive strength was 80, 130 and 180 MPa. All specimens were designed in accordance with the Japanese design guidelines. The tests demonstrated that, for specimens made of 180 MPa concrete compressive strength, spalling of cover concrete was very brittle followed by a significant decrease in strength. Curvature was much important for the small size than for the medium size columns. Concrete compressive strength had no effect on the curvature distribution for a drift varying between -2% and +2%. However, it had an effect on the drift corresponding to the peak moment and on the equivalent viscous damping variation. Simple equations are proposed for 1) evaluating the concrete Young's modulus for high strength concrete and for 2) evaluating the moment-drift envelope curves for the medium size columns knowing that of the small size columns. Experimental moment-drift and axial strain-drift histories were well predicted using a fiber model developed by the authors.
A simplified finite element analysis has been used to predict the weld-induced deformation to bead-on-plate welding of steel plates having curvatures in the welding direction. In this study, the equivalent loading method based on inherent strain was used to investigate the effect of longitudinal curvature on the weld-induced deformation of curved plates. Equivalent loads were derived from the inherent strain distribution around the weld line, and the loads were used for linear finite element analyses. These kinds of numerical simulations can, of course, be performed by using the rigorous thermalelastic-plastic analysis method. This approach is not, however, practical for use in weld-induced deformation analysis of large and complex structures, such as ship structures, in view of computing time and cost. The present equivalent load approach has been applied to several plate models having curvatures in the welding direction, and the results are compared with those obtained by thermal-elastic-plastic analysis and also with those obtained by the other simplified method found in reference. As far as the present results are concerned, the weld-induced deformation of curved plates can be accurately predicted by the method presented in this paper.
The purpose of this study is to develop practical tools for the mechanical design of cylindrical porous media subjected to a broad gap in a hygrothermal environment. The planar axisymmetrical and transient hygrothermoelastic field in a porous hollow cylinder that is exposed to a broad gap of temperature and dissolved moisture content and is free from mechanical constraint on all surfaces is investigated considering the nonlinear coupling between heat and binary moisture and the diffusive properties of both phases of moisture. The system of hygrothermal governing equations is derived for the cylindrical case and solved to illustrate the distributions of hygrothermal-field quantities and the effect of diffusive properties on the distributions. The distribution of the resulting stress is theoretically analyzed based on the fundamental equations for hygrothermoelasticity. The safety hazard because of the analysis disregarding the nonlinear coupling underestimating the stress is illustrated. By comparing the cylinder with an infinitesimal curvature with the straight strip, the significance to consider the existence of curvature, even if it is infinitesimally small, is demonstrated qualitatively and quantitatively. Moreover, by investigating the bending moment, the necessities to consider an actual finite curvature and to perform the transient analysis are illustrated.
A computer program was developed to analyze the non-linear, cyclic flexural performance of reinforced concrete structural members under various types of loading paths including non-sequential variations in axial load. This performance is significantly affected by the loading history. Different monotonic material models as well as hysteresis rules for confined and unconfined concrete and steel, some developed and calibrated against test results on material samples, were implemented in a fiber-based moment-curvature and in turn force-deflection analysis. One of the assumptions on curvature distribution along the member was based on a method developed to address the variation of the plastic hinge length as a result of loading pattern. Functionality of the program was verified by reproduction of analytical results obtained by others for several cases, and accuracy of the analytical process and the implemented models were evaluated against the experimental results from large-scale reinforced concrete columns tested under the analyzed loading cases. While the program can be used to predict the response of a member under a certain loading pattern, it can also be used to examine various analytical models and methods or refine a custom material model against test data.
