This paper presents a current control strategy in the synchronous reference frame for a single-phase PWM converter, which ensures sinusoidal input current control under the distorted source voltage and frequency condition. Given that the distorted source voltage distorts the phase angle for PWM converter control, the input current contains the same harmonics as the source voltage. Aside from the distorted voltage, the variation in source frequency reduces the performance of input current control. To achieve sinusoidal input current control under the distorted source voltage and frequency condition, this paper proposes a compensation strategy of current reference with the distortion component extracted from the phase angle and a detection strategy of frequency variation from the output of a synchronous reference frame phase-lock loop. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method under the distorted source voltage and frequency condition.
This paper presents a method to estimate p.d.f.(probability density function) of harmonic phasor voltage. Because the quantity of harmonics is not fixed, stochastic analysis of harmonics is needed. Because it is impossible to obtain p.d.f. of voltage from p.d.f. of current directly, the moments of voltage and current are used. Firstly, the moments of current is calculated from p.d.f. of current. Secondly, the moments of voltage are calculated from the moments of current using the linearity of the moments. Finally, p.d.f. of voltage is estimated from the moments of voltage using Gram-Charlier Type A Series. [1] The moments of the p.d.f. obtained by the series and of the true p.d.f. is same up to given finite moments. Because current and voltage of harmonics are represented as not instantaneous values but phasors, the estimated value can be compared with the measured value and harmonic phasor voltage can be analyzed when the p.d.f. of phase is nonuniform as well as uniform.
This paper presents a soft switching DC/DC converter for high voltage application. The interleaved pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme is used to reduce the ripple current at the output capacitor and the size of output inductors. Two converter cells are connected in series at the high voltage side to reduce the voltage stresses of the active switches. Thus, the voltage stress of each switch is clamped at one half of the input voltage. On the other hand, the output sides of two converter cells are connected in parallel to achieve the load current sharing and reduce the current stress of output inductors. In each converter cell, a half-bridge converter with the asymmetrical PWM scheme is adopted to control power switches and to regulate the output voltage at a desired voltage level. Based on the resonant behavior by the output capacitance of power switches and the transformer leakage inductance, active switches can be turned on at zero voltage switching (ZVS) during the transition interval. Thus, the switching losses of power MOSFETs are reduced. The current doubler rectifier is used at the secondary side to partially cancel ripple current. Therefore, the root-mean-square (rms) current at output capacitor is reduced. The proposed converter can be applied for high input voltage applications such as a three-phase 380V utility system. Finally, experiments based on a laboratory prototype with 960W (24V/40A) rated power are provided to demonstrate the performance of proposed converter.
A more reliable algorithm for detecting a high impedance fault (HIF) requires fault currents at the relaying point containing information of load condition as well as HIF characteristics. This paper presents a modeling method of an HIF in a distribution system using EMTP. From the voltage and current waveforms of HIF experiment, the voltage-current characteristic is obtained and then piecewise linearized. The proposed method gets several points on the linearized voltage-current curve and then represents nonlinearity as piecewise linear resistances using Transient Analysis of Control Systems (TACS) in EMTP. Thus, an HIF is represented as a voltage source in the first and third quadrants of voltage-current plane. The method is implemented in EMTP and thus the voltage and current at the relaying point can be obtained when an HIF occurs. In this paper, an HIF was simulated on various load conditions and fault conditions in 22.9 [kV] distribution systems.
This paper proposes a multimode hybrid control strategy that can achieve zero-voltage switching of primary switches and zero-current switching of secondary rectifier diodes in a wide input voltage range for full-bridge LLC resonant converters. When the input voltage is lower than the rated voltage, the converter operates in Mode 1 through the variable-frequency control strategy. When the input voltage is higher than the rated voltage, the converter operates in Mode 2 through the VF and phase-shift control strategy until the switching frequency reaches the upper limit. Then, the converter operates in Mode 3 through the constant-frequency and phase-shift control strategy. The secondary-side diode current will operate in the discontinuous current mode in Modes 1 and 3, whereas it will operate in the boundary current mode in Mode 2. The current RMS value and conduction loss can be reduced in Mode 2. A detailed theoretical analysis of the operation principle, the voltage gain characteristics, and the realization method is presented in this paper. Finally, a 500 W prototype with 100-200 V input voltage and 40 V output voltage is built to verify the feasibility of the multimode hybrid control strategy.
A new method for simulating voltage and current distributions in transmission lines is described. It gives the time domain solution of the terminal voltage and current as well as their line distributions. This is achieved by treating voltage and current distributions as distributed state variables (DSVs) and turning the transmission line equation into an ordinary differential equation. Thus the transmission line is treated like other lumped dynamic components, such as capacitors. Using backward differentiation formulae for time discretization, the DSV transmission line component is converted to a simple time domain companion model, from which its local truncation error can be derived. As the voltage and current distributions get more complicated with time, a new piecewise exponential with controllable accuracy is invented. A segmentation algorithm is also devised so that the line is dynamically bisected to guarantee that the total piecewise exponential error is a small fraction of the local truncation error. Using this approach, the user can see the line voltage and current at any point and time freely without explicitly segmenting the line before starting the simulation.
In the distribution networks, it is necessary to develop small and light voltage and current sensor for compact and digitalized switchgears. For this purpose, some researches have been continuing till now, CT(current transformer) and VT(voltage transformer) are one of that research. But conventional CT and VT have some problems, that is, have big size and saturation characteristics because of used to iron core. In this paper, CS(current sensor) and VS(voltage sensor), have some merits measuring of current and voltage magnitude as a alternated conventional equipment, were studied. So, this paper shows the process CS and VS design method, equivalent circuit and output result, respectively. As a result of this test, proposed CS and VS have linearity for the output, no saturation.
This paper presents the results of investigating harmonic levels on medium voltage motors at loading conditions in air separation plant. The essential results of the measurements of the medium voltage motor harmonics are summarized in the values for the total harmonic distortion (THD). Motors loading case is used to assess the current and voltage harmonic distortions. Proper system analysis is important when adding a new motor starting and controlling the equipment. With the result of the paper it is possible to suggest the most appropriate starting and control method. Two medium voltage motors of air separation unit measurement results and simulations are summarized. Both current and voltage harmonic distortions are fitted by using a linear and exponential regression model. The prediction of THD values can be used for this kind of process for future planning by utilities.
This paper proposes a performance improvement of existing single-phase current-fed qZ-Source inverter. Voltage gain of the traditional voltage-fed full-bridge inverter and single-phase current-fed qZ-source inverter is only equal to or smaller than input voltage. The proposed inverter can obtain twice higher voltage gain than the single-phase current-fed qZ-Source inverter by adding an extra switch and a capacitor in the circuit. In addition, the proposed inverter shares the common ground between dc input and ac output voltage. Therefore, the proposed inverter can eliminate the possible ground leakage current problem when it is used for grid-tied photovoltaic inverter system. A 120 W prototype inverter is built and tested to verify performances of the proposed inverter.

The three-phase diode rectifier with a capacitive filter is highly sensitive to line voltage unbalance, and may cause significantly unbalanced line currents even under slightly unbalanced voltage condition. This paper presents an analysis of this 'unbalance amplification' effect for an ideal rectifier circuit without ac-and dc-side inductors. The voltage unbalance is modeled by introducing a deviation voltage superimposed on balanced three-phase line voltages. With proper approximations, closed-form expressions for symmetrical components of the line current and current unbalance factor are derived in terms of the voltage unbalance factor, filter reactance, and load current. The validity of analytical predictions is confirmed by simulation.
