Status of Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity in Veterinary Research Facilities in Nigeria

  • Background: This study determined current status of laboratory biosafety in Nigerian veterinary research facilities. Methods: A questionnaire was developed to obtain information from researchers across Nigeria from July 2014 to July 2015. Information regarding demographics, knowledge of laboratory biosafety, availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), any priority pathogens researched, attitude on and use of standard laboratory practices, and biosafety awareness was obtained using a numeric scoring system. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, and univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: A total of 74 participants from 19 facilities completed the questionnaire. General knowledge scores ranged from 3 to 28 (out of 28 possible points), with 94.6% of respondents receiving low scores (scores < mean + 1 standard deviation). Very few (17.6%) reported availability or use PPE. Many participants (63.5%) reported no access to biosafety level (BSL)-1-3 facilities. None reported availability of a BSL-4 facility. Knowledge scores pertaining to biosafety management practices ranged from 0 to 14 (out of 14 possible points) with 47.3% of respondents receiving good scores (scores > mean + 1 standard deviation). Only 16.2% of respondents (from four facilities) reported having biosafety officers. Rabies virus was the most researched pathogen (31.1% of respondents). The majority (71.6%) were unaware of laws guiding biosafety. Researchers [odds ratio (OR) = 18.0; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.63, 198.5; p = 0.023], especially in BSL-2 (OR = 258.5; 95% CI: 12.71, 5256; p < 0.001) facility of research institute (OR = 25.0; 95% CI: 5.18, 120.6; p < 0.001), are more likely to have adequate access to and properly utilize biosafety devices and PPE. Conclusions: Current knowledge of laboratory biosafety is limited except among a few researchers.

공동주택 외피의 열교영향을 고려한 상당열관류율 및 연간 에너지소비성능 평가 연구 (A study on the annual energy performance of apartment building with the equivalent U-value of envelope considering the effect of thermal bridges)

  • The building envelope is important specially for saving energy consumption of residential buildings. but Apartment houses in Korea commonly have inside insulation system which have constantly arisen thermal bridges, the risk of heat loss, as a necessity. This study aims to evaluate integrated insulation performance according to the different shapes of external walls, adjacent to windows. The thermal performance analysis was carried out by Equivalent U-value and using the three-dimensional heat transfer computer simulation (TRISCO-RADCON), under nine different cases of comparing among three each of different bases(current standard model, 30percent energy saving model and 60percent energy saving model). The heating and the cooling load were also compared between two cases (standard U-value and Equivalent U-value) of three each of different bases, using the Building energy simulation which is based on DOE-2.1 analysis. As results, it turns out that if the Equivalent U-value is considered on the envelope analysis, the heat flow loss will be increasing more than the standard U-value, and if heat insulation property of the residential building reinforced rather than current, the rate of influences on the thermal bridges would be extremely expanded. In addition, it is shown that annual heating loads of the apartment house with applied Equivalent U-value substantially increased by more than 15 percent compared to those with the existing U-value, but annual cooling loads were negligibly affected.

  • 본 연구에서는 현행 지적측량 관련 법률에서 규정하고 있는 지적측량에 대한 성과인정 범위와 적용 장비 규정, 관련 규정에서의 정확도와 적용 규정 등을 종합적으로 고찰하여 지적재조사에 관한 특별법에서 규정하고 있는 지적측량의 성과인정 범위에 적합한 지적측량 장비의 성능 기준을 마련해 보고자 하였다. 연구성과는 다음과 같다. 적용 장비의 성능과 성과인정 범위에 대해 현행 법률과 지적재조사에 관한 특별법 규정의 비교를 통해 지적재조사사업시 장비의 성능 개선이 필요한 부분에 대해서 기초측량과 세부측량으로 구분하여 기준을 제시하였다. 본 연구의 성과는 지적재조사사업을 위한 기본계획수립시 측량 장비 수급 계획 등에 기초자료로 활용이 가능하다.

Distribution of Cd and Pb Accumulated in Medicinal Plant Roots and Their Cultivation Soils

  • In general, plant roots accumulate more heavy metals than the above ground organs such as leaf, stem, and fruit. This implies that root medicinal plants would be an issue with excessive heavy metal accumulation. Therefore, the current study was carried out to investigate the distribution of heavy metal (focused on Cd and Pb) concentrations in soils and medicinal plant roots grown in different region of Korea. Total 293 samples for each soil and plant were collected along the national wide. Soil pH, total and phytoavailable metal concentrations (1 M $NH_4NO_3$ extracted) in soils were determined and heavy metal concentrations in root of the medicinal plants were analyzed. Heavy metal concentrations of the soil samples studied were not exceeded standard limits legislated in 'Soil Environmental Conservation Act', except 2 samples for Cu. However, substantial amount of Cd was accumulated in medicinal plant roots with 29% samples exceeding the standard limit legislated in 'Pharmaceutical Affairs Act' while all plant samples were lower than the standard limit value for Pb. Also the current study demonstrated that cadmium concentrations in the roots were governed by the phytoavailable Cd in soils, which decreased as soil pH increased. From this result, application of heavy metal immobilization technique using a pH change-induced immobilizing agents can be suggested for safer root medicinal plant production.

씨앵커의 구성에 따른 수중 안정성에 관한 연구 (As tudy on the underwater stability according to the composition of the sea anchor)

  • Sea anchor for fishery is commonly used in jigging fishery and purse seine. The study of sea anchor was studied for improvement of opening efficiency and drag by changing the type of shape and the diameter of vent. However, standard specification of sea anchor is not set and has not been studied for underwater stability. Therefore, this study aimed to improve underwater stability of sea anchor by changing a vent diameter and weight of sinker. The experiment was conducted in flume water tank. The experiment model of sea anchor was made from actual model of sea anchor which is used in fishery by similarity law. The model of sea anchor was designed to different types of vent diameter and weight of sinker in different current speed. The value of movement of side to side (X-axis), drag of sea anchor (Y-axis) and movement of up and down (Z-axis) was measured for 30 seconds. Each value of X, Y, Z-axis was analyzed through t-test and ANOVA analysis to verify that each value had a significant difference according to the difference compositions. There was correlation between the movement of X-axis and Z-axis. The drag of sea anchor was stronger as the current speed increased. However, the larger the vent diameter, the weaker the drag. From the result of the standard deviation, the movement of X-axis was inversely proportional to the vent diameter. However, movement of Z-axis was larger as the weight of sinker was the heaviest or lightest from the result of the standard deviation. These results suggest that the sea anchor should be combined with proper size of the vent diameter and the weight of sinker to improve the stability.

Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients Undergoing Hip Fracture Surgery: A Survey of the Korean Hip Society

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the current status of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in Korean patients with hip fractures. Materials and Methods: A survey using a questionnaire on the experiences and protocols of VTE prevention was conducted among 570 members of the Korean Hip Society. Results: A total of 97 surgeons responded, with a response rate of 17.0%. Of the 97 participants, 61.9% answered that they had encountered one or more cases of symptomatic VTE in the past year. Mechanical prophylaxis was applied most often (30.9%) until the point of ambulation in standard-risk patients and most often (34.0%) extended until discharge in high-risk patients. Chemical prophylaxis was most often prescribed for a particular period of time rather than for recovery of walking ability (24.7% in standard-risk patients and 26.8% in high-risk patients). Dual prophylaxis was administered in the standard-risk group by 58.8% of the participants and in the high-risk group by 83.5%. Among the participants, 73.2% answered that they had been attentive to wound complications during chemical prophylaxis. More than half of the participants (59.8%) reported that they did not perform routine screening for VTE after surgery. Conclusion: The results of our survey provided information regarding the current status of VTE prevention for patients undergoing surgery for treatment of hip fractures in Korea as well as a baseline for establishment of educational programs and guidelines in the future.

해외 고등정보 표준교육과정 기반의 국내 대학 교육과정 비교분석 (A Comparative Analysis of domestic universities curriculum based on overseas higher Informatics standard curriculum)

  • 미국(CS2013)과 일본(J07-CS)은 고등교육의 수준에서 변화하는 사회를 반영하는 표준 정보교육과정을 구성하고 있다. 본 연구는 한국의 고등 정보교육과정 표준 구성에 대한 시사점을 제공하기 위해 미국의 표준교육과정 변화를 분석하고, 한국의 대학 교육과정 구성 현황 분석 및 내용 지식에 근거하여 과목을 구성하였다. 연구 진행 결과 미국의 고등 정보교육과정은 변화하는 컴퓨팅 환경을 반영하는 교육과정으로 진화하고 있었다. 국내 대학의 정보교육과정은 CS2013의 지식영역을 52% 정도만 포함하고 있었다. 본 연구는 일본의 교육과정 과목 구성방침에 근거하여 과목 구성의 예를 제시하였으며, 대학의 표준 정보 교육과정이 없는 상황에서 교육과정 구성을 위한 단초를 제공했다는 점에 의의를 두고 있다.

경기도내 병원에 종사하는 임상병리사의 표준주의 수행도에 영향을 미치는 요인: 건강신념모델을 중심으로 (Awareness and Compliance with Standard Precautions among the Hospital Laboratory Room Technicians in Gyeonggi Province: Based on Health Belief Model)

  • Objectives: The current study intended to find the awareness and compliance with the standard precautions of the laboratory technicians working in the hospitals in Gyeonggi Province. Understanding on the relationships among factors would be helpful in developing work environment of the laboratory technicians to prevent infection and improving the quality of infection control in hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from the 313 laboratory technicians in hospitals in Gyeonggi Province. SPSS 21.0. and AMOS 18 were adopted to analyze the data. Results: The results of the analysis confirmed that the influence of perceived sensitivity and cues to action influenced perceived threats of disease. Perceived threats and perceived barriers to compliance with the standard precautions and perceived benefits of compliance with the standard precautions significantly influenced the probability of compliance with the standard precautions. Conclusion: It was recommended that hospitals need to prepare plans to prevent the employees from infection in the hospitals. The plans must include education, regular exams, injury prevention, and provision of personal protective equipments.

한방병원의 봉약침 시술 동의서의 사용 현황과 표준 시술 동의서 개발에 대한 제안 (Usage of informed consent form for Bee-venom pharmacopuncture Therapy at korean medicine hospitals and Proposal for development of a standard informed consent form.)

  • Objectives: We investigated the current status of the consent form for bee-venom pharmacopuncture therapy, which is using in Korean medicine hospitals. We suggest the development of a standard informed consent form. Method: Through the questionnaire survey, status of using informed consent form was identified at 24 Korean medicine hospitals. We analyze different types of informed consent form, which was developed by each hospitals. We investigated the types of informed consent forms for various medical procedures through electronic searches. A standard informed consent form for bee-venom pharmacopuncture therapy was developed based on the medical law and the standard informed consent form for medical procedures developed by Korea Fair Trade Mediation Agency. Result: In our survey, 65% of the hospitals do not use consent well, only 35% of the hospitals use informed consent form, and the most hospitals use self-developed informed consent form. As a result of analyzing the contents of informed consent form used in each hospitals, the explanation of diagnosis, treatment precautions, suggestions for other treatments, consequences of not performing the scheduled procedure, possibility of treatment change was insufficient. 48% of hospitals manage consent in recording on a chart, 39% in scanned documents, and 13% in digital electronic consent form. Conclusion: A standard informed consent form for Bee-venom pharmacopuncture therapy include diagnosis, effectivness, necessity, indications, method, skin reaction test, hypersensitivity questionnaire, treatment precautions, possible hypersensitivity reactions and countermeasures, suggestions for other treatments, consequences of not performing the scheduled procedure, possibility of treatment change and the name of doctor.

성인 여성복의 KS 치수 표준 개정을 위한 제안 연구 (A Study on the Suggestion for the Revision of Standard Sizing System for Female Adult's Garments)

  • KS K 0051(2009) was established in 1990 and revised in 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009. Recently the structure of apparel production and distribution are changing like as small quantity batch production, increase of importing abroad apparel and increase of on-line shopping mall. Based on Social and economic conditions, examine the potential for use of KS K 0051(2009) standard sizing system for female adult's garments are needed. Through which, it was intended to suggestion for the revision of standard sizing system for female adult's garments which can facilitate communication among consumer, producer and sellers. The improvement point was discussed through review of the current KS K 0051 (2009) and abroad standard sizing system for female adult's garments, ISO 3637(1977), ISO 4416(1981), BS EN 13402-2(2002), BS EN 13402-3(2004), JIS L 4005(2001) and GB/T 1335.2(2008). Also, the revision of standard sizing system for female adult's garments was suggested using data of 6th Size Korea. As a result of this study, in the revision, formal wear, casual wear, training wear and under wear were separated to simplify the classification and the classification of body type were excluded. Also, it is possible that size designation was simplified through optional notation and letter code based on bust girth could be marked together in casual wear.
