Current overshoot operation of a REBCO magnet to mitigate SCF

  • Due to large in-field current carrying capacity and strong mechanical strength, a REBCO wire has been regarded as a viable high temperature superconductor (HTS) option for high field MRI and > 1 GHz (>23.5 T) NMR magnets. However, a REBCO magnet is well known to have an inherent problem of field inhomogeneity, so-called 'Screening Current induced magnetic Field (SCF)'. Recently, 'field shaking' and 'current overshoot operation' techniques have been successfully demonstrated to mitigate the SCF and enhance the field homogeneity by experiments. To investigate the effectiveness of current overshooting operation technique, a numerical simulation is conducted for a test REBCO magnet composed of a stack of double pancake coils using '2D edge-element magnetic field formulation' combined with 'domain homogenization' scheme. The simulation result demonstrates that an appropriate amount of current overshoot can negate the SCF. To verify the simulation results, current overshoot experiments are conducted for the REBCO magnet in liquid nitrogen. Experimental results also demonstrate the possible application of current overshoot technique to mitigate the SCF and enhance the field homogeneity.

Two Modified Z-Source Inverter Topologies - Solutions to Start-Up Dc-Link Voltage Overshoot and Source Current Ripple

  • This paper proposes two modified Z-source inverter topologies, namely an embedded L-Z-source inverter (EL-ZSI) and a coupled inductor L-Z source inverter (CL-ZSI). The proposed topologies offer a high voltage gain with a reduced passive component count and reduction in source current ripple when compared to conventional ZSI topologies. Additionally, they prevent overshoot in the dc-link voltage by suppressing heavy inrush currents. This feature reduces the transition time to reach the peak value of the dc-link voltage, and reduces the risk of component failure and overrating due to the inrush current. EL-ZSI and CL-ZSI possess all of the inherent advantages of the conventional L-ZSI topology while eliminating its drawbacks. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed topologies, MATLAB/Simulink models and scaled down laboratory prototypes were constructed. Experiments were performed at a low shoot through duty ratio of 0.1 and a modulation index as high as 0.9 to obtain a peak dc-link voltage of 53 V. This paper demonstrates the superiority of the proposed topologies over conventional ZSI topologies through a detailed comparative analysis. Moreover, experimental results verify that the proposed topologies would be advantageous for renewable energy source applications since they provide voltage gain enhancement, inrush current, dc-link voltage overshoot suppression and a reduction of the peak to peak source current ripple.

Improvement of One-Cycle Controller Response with a Current Mode Controller

  • The most important feature of the one-cycle control method is its excellent ability in line disturbance rejection. However, when it is used as a controller in dc-dc converters, it has an undesirable transient response. The voltage overshoot at the transient time, which usually exists in one-cycle controlled converters, is unwanted in many applications and it is sometimes hazardous. In this paper, it is shown that the combination of a one-cycle controller with a current mode controller, can improve the transient response and consequently the overshoot can be controlled. Therefore, the combined controller has the excellent line disturbance rejection of a one-cycle controller and the output current limiting capability of current mode controllers. Because in this scheme a one-cycle controller is the master controller, the problem of instability of current mode control, will not happen. By simulation and a practical prototype, the capability of the method is shown.

  • From the cost-effective product point of view, it is very important to design a new current controller with the highest utilization factor of current capacity of power devices. This paper deals with a state-deadbeat current controller for PWM converters, which shows the fastest current control response without overshoot irrespective of the saturation of control voltage. No-overshoot control response means that the current capacity could be fully utilized in the control sense. Simulational results done by Matlab's Simulink show good current control characteristics.

Digital Current Controller with Smith-Predictor for PWM Converters

  • From the cost-effective point of view, it is very important to design a current with the highest utilization factor of current capacity of power devices. This can be accomplished by a current controller without overshoot irrespective of the varying bounds of control voltage in PWM converters and the dead time due to the time delay. This paper suggests a novel decoupled controller with Smith-Predictor which has the fast control response without overshoot and steady stats error and also deal with the design method of the controller for PWM converters. The extensive digital simulations done by SIMULINK/MATLAB show that the suggested controller guarantees the full utilization of current capacity of power devices and the decoupled current control behavior.

  • In this paper a predictive current control strategy is adopted in the D.C motor drive using dual converter. It is a kind of feedforward control working without overshoot within very short settling time. The difference to the well-known PI current control lies in considering the computer's ability of pre-calcurating the converter's behavior. By simulation it is shown that the predictive current control solve the problems of optimal PI current control, such as overshoot and settling time.

무손실 수동스너버를 갖는 고역율 부스트 정류기 (High-Power-Factor Boost Rectifier with a Passive Lossless Snubber)

  • A passive energy recovery snubber for high-power-factor boost rectifier, in which the main switch is implemented with a MOSFET, is described in terms of the equivalent circuits that are operational during turn-on and turn-off sequences. These equivalent circuits are analyzed so that the overshoot voltage across the main switch, the snubber current, and the turn-off transition time can be predicted analytically. From these results, the normalized overshoot voltage is reduced to 1 as $_W2T_on$ varies from zero to $\pi$/2, and then it is fIxed at 1 for $_W2T_on$> $\pi$/2. The peak snubber inductor current is directly proportional to the input current. The turn-offtransition time wltoffvaries from 0 to 2.57, depending on $_W2T_on$. The main switch combined with proposed snubber can be turned on with zero current and turned off at limited voltage stress. The high-power-factor boost rectifier with proposed snubber is implemented, and the experimental results are presented to confirm the validity of proposed snubber.

  • 피드백 전압 감지 구조는 기존 외부 출력 캐패시터의 제거로 인한 오버슈트 및 언더슈트 현상을 완화하기 위해 제안된다. 기존의 LDO 레귤레이터는 전원 공급 전압의 불균형으로 인해 발생하는 오버슈트 및 언더슈트를 겪는다. 따라서 제안된 LDO는 기존 LDO의 피드백 경로만 유지하면서 새로운 제어 경로를 형성하기 위해 보다 개선된 과도 응답을 갖도록 설계되었다. 새로운 제어 경로는 출력 단계에서 발생하는 오버슈트 및 언더슈트 현상을 감지한다. 이에, 패스 소자의 게이트 노드의 전류를 충방전함으로써 패스 소자의 동작 속도가 향상된다. 피드백 전압 감지 구조가 있는 LDO 레귤레이터는 3.3~4.5V의 입력 전압 범위에서 작동하며 3V의 출력 전압에서 최대 200mA의 부하 전류를 가집니다. 시뮬레이션 결과에 따르면 부하전류가 200mA일 때 언더슈트 조건에서는 73mV, 오버슈트 조건에서는 61mV이다.

  • 본 논문에서는 LED조명의 휘도조절을 위해 PWM 휘도조절시 발생하는 LED전류의 과도 상태제거를 위한 전류제어 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 LED전류 제어 기법은 과도상태가 존재하지 않으므로 휘도조절 신호의 동작 시비율이 매우 작은 영역에서도 전류 제어를 통해 낮은 휘도를 정밀하게 표현할 수 있다. 또한 전류의 Overshoot이 발생하지 않으므로 휘도를 일정하게 유지할 수 있는 장점을 가진다. 본 논문에서는 제안된 LED전류 제어 기법의 동작원리를 설명하고, PSIM을 이용한 모의실험 및 실제 46인치 LCD TV의 시작품 제작을 통해 제안된 기법의 타당성 및 우수성을 검증한다.

  • This paper deals with the comparisons of gain design of current controller with the first order lag characteristics. Usually the current controller for motor drives and PCSs has the first order lag characteristics to avoid the current overshoot. This paper suggests a new inductor current controller for the PCSs and also compares with other two current controllers. The simulation results show that the proposed design method also gives the first order lag characteristics and can be used as an alternative current controller for PCSs.
