This study compared the theory of a culvert spacing and analytical results of the seepage flow for the subsurface drainage. i) If culvert spacing (Sc) is within 5 m, the unit drainage (q) is very larger; in contrast, if Sc is 5 m or more, there is very little drainage in the middle between drains. Therefore, the drain spacing should be within 5 m to ensure high drainage efficiency. ii) Since the planned culvert drainage increases linearly with the soil's permeability coefficient (k), k must be taken into account when determining the drain diameter by the planned culvert drainage. iii) As a result of analyzing the drainage performance of the absorbing culvert, the drainage performance is sufficient with the diameter of the corrugated drain pipe Dc = 50 mm at the length of the drain Lc = 100 m. iv) Therefore, if the drain spacing (Sc) is less than 5 m using the low-cost non-excavated drainage pipe method (${\Phi}50mm$ the corrugated drain pipe and fiber mat) rather than the conventional trench drain method (Sc > 10 m, Dc > 100 mm), uniform and high drainage efficiency can be ensured as well as low construction cost. v) The sub-irrigation+drainage culvert requires narrower drain spacing (Sc < 2-3 m) for irrigation. As a result of examining the condition of 35 mm in diameter (Dc) and 2~3 m in drain spacing, it is possible to apply the non-excavated drainage pipe method to the sub-irrigation+drainage culvert because drainage performance is sufficient at the drain length Lc = 50 m.
In this study, subsurface discharge performance has been studied through theoretical seepage analysis on four types of culverts that can be installed under the condition of non-excavation, such as (a)perforated pipe(${\Phi}50mm$), (b)perforated pipe+horizontal mat (B50cm) (c)perforated pipe+horizontal mat+vertical gravel(B<10cm), (d)perforated pipe+vertical gravel(B<10cm), and existing typical type (e)perforated pipe with gravel (B40, h=40cm) which can be installed by excavation. The analysis results were as follows. i) Subsurface discharge performance per unit (m) was (a)type 56%, (b) 91%, (c) 96%, (d) 76%, respectively, lower than the value of (e)culvert. ii) However, considering that non-excavation culvert can be installed at a spacing of 5m with the installation cost of the existing excavation culvert at the interval of 10m, it was analyzed that unit subsurface discharge(q) of (a)20.2mm/day(110%), (b)32.8(178%), (c)34.6(188%) (d)27.5(149%) in the four types of non-excavation culvert installed at intervals of 5m under the condition of $ k=10^{-4}cm/s$ was much larger than the amount of (e)type 18.5(100%), existing excavation culvert installed at 10m interval. iii) Through the test construction, peak subsurface drainage discharge($q_p$) was 38.4mm/day, which is larger than the value of design criteria and confirmed that it satisfies the analysis results as well. iv) In particular, it was evaluated that (b)perforated pipe+horizontal mat(B50cm) are low cost, high efficiency subsurface drainage culvert type with sufficient drainage performance(178%).
In this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical parametric study was conducted to investigate deformation mechanisms of an existing box culvert due to an adjacent multi-propped basement excavation in clays. Field measurements from an excavation case history are first used to calibrate a baseline Hardening Soil Small Strain (HS-small) model, which is subsequently adopted for parametric study. Results indicate that the basement-box culvert interaction along the basement centerline can be considered as a plane strain condition when the length of excavation (L) reaches 14 He (i.e., final excavation depth). If a plane strain condition (i.e., L/He=12.0) is assumed for analyzing the basement-box culvert interaction of a short excavation (i.e., L/He=2.0), the maximum settlement and horizontal movement of the box culvert are overestimated significantly by up to 15.7 and 5.1 times, respectively. It is also found that the deformation of box culvert can be greatly affected by the basement excavation if the distance between the box culvert and retaining wall is less than 1.5 He. The induced deformation in the box culvert can be dramatically reduced by improving the ground inside the excavation or implementing other precautionary measures. For example, by adding jet grouting columns within the basement and installing an isolation wall behind the retaining structures, the maximum settlements of box culvert are shown to reduce by 37.2% and 13.4%, respectively.
This study is intended to discuss the application of expansive additives for concrete to improve the durability of precast concrete box culvert by inducing the chemical prestress. The precast concrete box culvert using expansive cement are tested to verify the effect of expansive additives. The results show that the initial cracking load and yielding load of the expansive cement numbers are increased when they are compared with those of the normal concrete. In the prototype precast concrete box culvert experiment, initial crack control effect and strength of joint are increased, but the deflection is decreased by expansive cement. Brides, reinforcement ratio is decreased about 14.6 percent in compering with the case of using normal cement. If can be the concluded that the use of expansive additives to induce the chemical prestress was improve the durability in concrete box culvert.

Buried box culverts are crucial elements of transportation infrastructure. However, their behavior under foundation loads is not well understood, indicating a significant gap in existing research. This study aims to bridge this gap by conducting a detailed numerical analysis using the Finite Element Method and Abaqus software. The research evaluates the behavior of buried box culverts by examining their interaction with surrounding soil and the pressures from surface foundation loads. Key variables such as embedment depth, culvert wall thickness, concrete material properties, foundation pressure, foundation width, soil elastic modulus, and friction angle are altered to understand their combined effects on structural response. The methodology employs a validated 2D numerical model under plane strain conditions. Parametric studies highlight the critical role of culvert depth (H) in influencing earth pressure and bending moments. Foundation pressure and width demonstrate complex interdependencies affecting culvert behavior. Variations in culvert materials' elastic modulus show minimal impact. It was found that the lower wall of the buried culvert experiences higher average pressure compared to the other two walls, due to the combined effects of the culvert's weight and down drag forces on the side walls. Furthermore, while the pressure distribution on the top and bottom walls is parabolic, the pressure on the side walls follows a different pattern, differing from that of the other two walls.
The purpose of this research is to analyze sensitivities on hydraulic characteristic factors of bridge and culvert causing flood water level rising. With HEC-RAS and RMA2 models, analysis of backwater due to bridge and culvert in an ideal stream was carried out. The results of hydraulic modeling and sensitivity analysis indicated that the opening ratio and the Froude number were the most sensitive factors and other factors were not quite sensitive to flood water level rising.
The objective of this study is to develop the CAD system for 2 cell box culvert by ultimate strength design method. C-language & AutoCAD Rl2 were used to create user-friendly computing environment. Consequently, users can easily design 2 cell box culvert under the various conditions, such as design load, total fill depth, underground water level, strength of concrete, and so forth. This system is believed to improve the efficiency and economy by the batch processing of structural analysis, quick drafting and computation of material quantity in the 2 cell box culvert design.
