  • The use of clay bricks dates back to ancient Egypt. From the stamped clay tablets to the works of contemporary buildings, clay was significant building material for both cultural and pragmatic reasons. In the making of modern architecture in Egypt, Hassan Fathy employed clay as primary substance for building. This study demonstrates the use of clay bricks in ancient Egypt and in the works of Hassan Fathy. This study further exemplifies that the use of clay bricks is still valid in contemporary architecture in Upper Egypt and Siwa Oasis. The use of clay bricks provides structural durability and efficient insulation in the arid regions, and it also adheres to the vernacular building traditions. This paper proves that the use of clay bricks plays a crucial role in the making of modern architecture in Egypt for its pertinence in the historic continuity and practicality.

  • In this article, the excavation and research of cultural assets were set as a process and the improvement measures were considered. To this end, we examined the process of excavating cultural assets to diagnose problems, suggested changes in the format of reports and the establishment of a database, and drew up improvement models for Silla's ancient tombs and research. The problems of the current process of excavating cultural assets are as follows. First, investigation and research fail to integrate and merely comprise 'examination as an administrative procedure' or 'investigation for the sake of investigation', which ultimately hamper research and achievement. Second, there are differences in the composition or description of the report by surveyors or excavation agencies, which make it difficult to integrate data at a higher level. Third, the current form of reporting remains in analog format such as books and PDFs, which not only reduces continuity and efficiency to the research phase, but also lags behind the rapidly changing times. We believe that the improvement of these problems should be achieved by computerizing reports, converting them into digital formats, and establishing them in a database. First, regarding the transition to report format, it was pointed out that the form of excavation data, the final stage of the excavation process, remains analog and the improvement model was presented from the perspective of linking it to excavation and research, and the justification was emphasized through comparison with other cases. Second, the database reviewed the build model for Silla tombs. To this end, the purpose and expected effects, targets, progress, attributes, categories, and interfaces were examined.

A Study on Yingzi's Narration of Nostalgia for Peking - Based on Linhaiyin's Novel ChengnanJiushi and Wuyigong's Film of the Same Title (잉즈의 베이징 노스탤지어 서사에 관한 고찰 - 린하이인(林海音) 소설집과 우이궁(吳貽弓) 동명 영화 『베이징 남쪽의 옛 이야기(城南舊事)』를 중심으로)

  • Peking has peculiar features as capital city, and has gone through various transformations, with its name changed from Peking to Peiping to Peking. Even when it did not serve as a capital city, it still played an unrivaled role in cultural aspects. Laoshe, a great writer of 'Peking flavour' literature, is famous for works full of cultural charms of Peking. In his works, which show the manners, norms, art, culture and optimistic life style of Peking, Peking culture is described as an extension of cultural traditions of Qiren. In addition, his critical view of reality is also expressed in the works. Linhaiyin's literary works show ordinary hutongs she experienced in the 1920s in Chengnan, the southern part of Peking, and the quiet and simple life of warm-hearted people living there. Her vague memories of Peking, along with her nostalgia for the city, let her describe the city with recreated happy memories of it instead of the harsh critical view. Her works express the city in her recreated memory full of hope, with her dark memories of the city being glossed over. As seen above, Laoshe realistically described the tragic and difficult life of low class people in hutongs of Peking as well as lower middle class people of the city. Meanwhile, in ChengnanJiushi, Linhaiyin expresses the daily routine and ordinary life of people in Peking from the perspective of middle class people. In addition, she showed the sympathetic view of middle class citizens towards their low-class neighbors. In Peking Menghualu, Wangdewei mentioned that the 'castle of memory' which old Peking people in Taiwan tried to establish fills an important gap for the continuity of Peking cultural history and cultural imagination. This indicates that the 'Peking castle of memories,' which Linhaiyin, a Taiwanese writer well known for 'Peking flavour,' has established plays a big role in filling part of such gap. ChengnanJiushi, Wuyigong's film based on Linhaiyin's novel of the same title, also describes the daily sceneries and culture of the southern Peking in the 1920s, which both Taiwanese and Chinese people miss, through sophisticated images with 'profound yearning tinted with calm sadness', accomplishing an artistic achievement different from that of the novel.

  • In today's society, being considered ecological in fashion design and having a cultural and humanistic approach is important. Using a technological approach, the fold concept was applied to understand and analyze the ecological characteristics of a modern fashion aesthetic design. The concept of 'Ecological Aesthetic Design', which we discuss in this study, is part of human nature, and the design concept is used to consider the relationship between the man and the environment to the design of Victor Papanek. From the perspective of interrelation between the components of an ecosystem, the possibility of the fold's application to ecological aesthetic design can be summarized by wholeness, biodiversity, evolution, homeostasis, and circularity. The concept of the fold is revealed mainly through three types of characteristics: indeterminate complexity, potential continuity, and decentralized interaction relationship. Based on the characteristics of the concept presented earlier, this study conducted a case review by distinguishing contemporary fashion that applied the complex, various, and indeterminate fold concepts into flexible transformation, continuity, and complementary circularity. This study was interpreted from the ecological aesthetic point of view based on the nature of the contingent folds presented before applying modern fashion concepts. It focused on the morphological side, and excluded the material aspects of the case study in order to examine the complex, diverse and content aspects. The result of the study is as follows. The study of the research areas that help the understanding of the changing fashion phenomenonneeds to be encouraged, and there should be a new research category, which can contribute to the ecological aesthetic design concept conversion.

  • This study aims at evaluating the characteristics and the preference on the sign design in the industrial heritages space. The research were performed by the process of literature review, case study, and survey of questionnaire. Seven industrial heritage space in Korea and China regenerated as art and cultural space after 2000 were selected and evaluated by 6 criteria including integrity, continuity, simplicity, aesthetics, legibility and historic aspects. The findings were the following. First, the six criteria factors were evaluated as the similar scores in the assessment of 7 sites without extremity. Simplicity was the highest score while historicality was the lowest one. It means that the characteristics of the sign systems of the heritage sites were focused on the simple, contemporary and effective design. Second, integrity, continuity, aesthetics, legibility were evaluated as the medium score in the sign design. While, in the evaluation on the aesthetics the score differences were comparatively high. Sanhai M50 which got the highest score showed the integrity of contrast using yellow and grey color with minimal design. However, Sanghai M50 got the lowest score in the historic aspects and was evaluated as the most favorite sign design in the preference. It means that the historic aspects have no direct relationship with the preference for the sign design. It shows that the effectiveness with integrity and the aesthetic aspects are considered more importantly than the application of the historic identity of the site in sign design.

  • This study examined a phenomenon of exaggerated hairstyle in the history of Western custom through publications related with Western costume and research papers. By adopting the criteria of Delong, M. R. to analyze visual forms shown by interaction between human body and costume worn over the body, it analyzed the formative characteristics by the interaction between hairstyle and costume. In addition, it inferred the aesthetic characteristics through content analysis of examined phenomenon focusing on socio-cultural background and costume socio-psychological precedent studies. Formative characteristics of exaggerated hairstyle applied by analysis criteria of Delong, M. R. were in pursuit of the emphasis style. This was clearly and intensively recognized by forming spaces for mostly closure style, part style, three dimensional style, determinate style, and space separation style. Regarding the interaction between hair and ornamentations, 'precedence of ornamentation' was pursued as ornamentations were recognized earlier than the hair itself. It means associative meanings of the surface effect were accompanied by emotions of 'intensiveness' and the pursuit of the attractive style. As for the interaction between hairstyle and costume, there were many cases of pursuing 'continuity' mutually and visually by connecting the hairstyle and the costume. Aesthetic characteristics of exaggerated hairstyle were inferred as 1) the expression of the sprite of the age(i.e. art, culture, politics, society, ideology, religion), 2) symbols of wealth, class, authority, and excellence, 3) pursuit of addicted desire to ornament, and 4) harmony through continuity with costume. This study verified that hairstyle was connected as a part of costume, or formed as a way to express deeper human psychology beyond just a part of a costume. It was also confirmed that hairstyle was an expressive method to express the spirit of the age, such as art, culture, society, religion, ideology.

  • This paper attempts to clarify the similarity found in Seo Jungjoo's two books of poems, Seo Jungjoo Shiseon and Shillacho, and thereby to establish the continuity between Seo's early poetry and his mid-period poetry. This attempt arises from the realization that unfamiliar poetic material, background, and narration are merely surface features, and that in fact his early concerns nevertheless persist in terms of his poetic imagination and his Weltanschauung. Furthermore, this continuity seems to originate from shamanistic spiritual chaos that is consubstantially interrelated with the spirit of his deceased lover. After chaos and confusion subsided, the poet's endeavor to discover the lineal origin of his personal shamanism shows itself in Seo Jungjoo Shiseon, and we witness the embodiment of such endeavor in Shillacho. His interest in the skies as it is expressed in my poem, and Shilla as it is intimated by Gwanghwamun are sublimated in saso yeonjag and the words of Queen Seondeog into shamanic wisdom that served as the norm for both spiritual life and physical life in ancient times, and the wisdom is carried on further into the present in Seo's own times. Moreover, the star and the bell sound that were presented as signs of desirable Weltanschauung in Sangrigwawon are transformed into the symbols of shamanic wisdom, and into the inner magic formula that contributes to achieving the wisdom. This analysis offers as its result the evidence embedded in his poems that shows, first, that the two books correspond to merely two separate stages of his poetic concern, and second, that his early poetic concern persists, though transformed through a peculiar manner, into his mid-period poems.
