This study was carried out to compare growth characteristics, and extract and crude saponin contents of 4-year-old ginseng cultured by direct seeding and transplanting cultivation at several farms of the main producing district, Geumsan and Eumsung. Though root weight per plant of direct seeding cultivation was lower than that of transplanting cultivation, but yield of the former was higher than that of the latter owing to high rate of survival plant and Leaf Area Index. Dry matter partitioning ratio of direct seeding cultivation was high in primary root and low in secondary root because direct seeding cultivation elongated the length of primary root, while it suppressed the growth of secondary root. Ratio of rusty root was decreased in condition of direct seeding cultivation, while the contents of extract and crude saponin were lower than that of transplanting cultivation.
The crop rotation of rice and ginseng in paddy field has very important meaning because up-land field suitable for ginseng cultivation is now being insufficient day by day in main ginseng production area. This studies were conducted to define basic problems related to ginseng cultivation and replanting in paddy field. In Keumsan district, the most serious problem on ginseng cultivation in paddy field was excess of mineral salts left behind in the soil of rice cultivation. The amounts of organic matters, CEC and the mineral elements including potassium were higher in the soil of paddy ginseng field compared to those of upland. Plant growth of 3 and 4 year old ginseng and root yield of four year old ginseng cultivated in paddy field of 1st and replanting were not decreased compared to those of 1st - planting of up-land field, but those were significantly decreased in replanted compared to those of first planted upland field. Crop rotation with ginseng and rice in paddy field seemed to be a good way to avoid hazards of continuous cropping of ginseng with it's outyield of root and less infection of diseases. Amounts of crude saponin and ginsenosides of ginseng cultivated in paddy field were not differ from those of upland field.
The production of ginseng cultivation is decreasing due to shortage of cultivated land and climate change, so additional methods are needed. Therefore, the physiological and morphological characteristics of finebubble were analyzed by applying them to ginseng cultivation which is the representative crop of Korea. The application of fine bubble water to 2 year old ginseng showed that stem length and leaf were increased, and weight increased as main root increased in root. In particular, it is shown that the weight of roots increases with the increase of leaf size. This is because the total chlorophyll content is high and it is judged to be related to the increase of photosynthesis efficiency. When the results of this study were confirmed, it was confirmed that ginseng cultivation using fine bubbles showed no inhibition of growth of ginseng. According to the results of physiological characteristics and subdividing results, It was confirmed that the growth of about 10% to 15% of the growth was increased and that the growth of ginseng was increased by applying the fine bubble when growing ginseng.
Two edible plants, Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum and Ligularia stenocephala, and one medicinal plant, Panax ginseng, were cultivated in the understory of an artificial Larix kaempferi plantation for ten years. Growth characteristics (number of leaves and flower stalks per plant, and leaf length and width), survival rate, and yield (fresh weight of plants) per unit area (1 ㎡) were investigated one year after planting, and six and ten years following cultivation. P. ginseng and L. stenocephala survived at a high percentage for two years after planting. Results showed that P. ginseng had longer and thicker roots when aged; however, a large number of plants died and the yield was low. In contrast, almost half of A. victorialis var. platyphyllum died within two years of planting. The surviving plants grew well for ten years and the yield was increased. The leaf length and width of L. stenocephala increased; however, the survival rate and the number of leaves per plant decreased as the period of cultivation was extended. In contrast, A. victorialis var. platyphyllum survived at a lower rate (50%) than the two other crops (98% for L. stenocephala and 83% for P. ginseng) during the early cultivation period, with little change in the survival rate over an extended time; however, the yields increased. This species showed an increase in the number of flower stalks and leaves, and as a result, the larger leaves increased the yield. We evaluated the understory cultivation of three crops in a L. kaempferi plantation under natural conditions, with no irrigation or fertilization, and Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum showed the greatest growth potential among the three tested crops.
Ginseng, a representative medicinal plant of South Korea, is also highly valued in North Korea. However, due to limited access to information about North Korea, the actual cultivation, research and development trends, and related industry status of ginseng in North Korea are not well known. In this study, we aimed to understand the current status and research trends of the ginseng industry in North Korea based on limited available literature. In the North Korean pharmacopoeia, ginseng is referred to as "Koryo ginseng" and is defined as the roots of 6-year-old ginseng cultivated in the Kaesong region. The pharmacopoeia includes 22 types of ginseng preparations. In addition, 10 ginseng preparations are included in North Korea's Essential Drug List, and various health supplements, cosmetics, and toothpastes containing ginseng have been developed, distributed, and sold. Since 2014, the ginseng industry and research in North Korea have become more active overall. During this period, the ginseng cultivation area in Kaesong has been significantly expanded, and the facilities have been renovated. The Kaesong Koryo Ginseng Processing Plant has been equipped with sterilized, modernized facilities since 2016 and has been in operation. Since 2017, there has been a growing interest in quality control research, leading to the introduction of quality management regulations and certification systems in 2019. In the 1990s, there was significant research on ginseng product development, and since the 2000s, studies on the pharmacological effects and clinical research of ginseng have been reported. Additionally, research on ginseng cultivation and ginseng processing industries to increase yield has been emphasized. Ginseng, as a representative medicinal crop of Korea, holds great importance for both South and North Korea. Given its significance and the potential for synergy through mutual cooperation, ginseng serves as an ideal subject for inter-Korean exchange and collaboration.
This study investigated ginseng growth and ginsenoside contents after control a reserved ginseng cultivation land using various green manure crops for stable ginseng cultivation. Followings are results obtained from this research. After cultivate the green manure crops, microbial flora in soil was diversified, organic matter and total-N content increased, but salt content decreased. The highest output obtained from the wheat cultivated area among various green manure corps. Growth of shoot and root of two years old ginseng increased significantly at the green manure crop cultivated area. Specially, the wheat cultivated area was the most effective in growth. Also, the rate of the leaf discoloration at the aerial part and the rusty root at the root was the least at the wheat cultivation area. Meanwhile, the ginsenoside content was the most at the wheat cultivation area. Thus, the reserved ginseng cultivation land could be managed by cultivating wheat for effective ginseng growth.
The strains of Panax ginseng C.A. Mey., P. quinquefolius L. and selected strains P. ginseng-B, P.ginseng-A, P. quinquefolius-C were investigated. Activities of SOD, catalase and peroxydase were determined by methods of Fridovich et al. (1979), Komov et al.(1975), Bovaird et al.(1982) respectively. Activities of SOD, catalase, peroxydase were investigated every day 5 in cycle of cultivation. For P. ginseng it was the 35 days, P. quinquefolius the 70 days, P. quinquefolius-C 90 days. P. ginseng-B 90 days, P. ginseng-A 60 days. The P. quinquefolius, P. quinquefolius-C, P. ginseng-B had clear differentiation and developed tracheid elements, which are absent in strain of P. ginseng. The peaks of protein content for P. ginseng (4.5 units/g) and for P. quinquefolius (3.5 units/g) were on day 10 and remained unchanged till the last cultivation. The strain P. ginseng-A had two peaks of protein content (2.5 mg/g) on day 15 and on day 30. For P. ginseng-B strain these peaks were on day 5 and day 40 (3.5 mg/g). Peroxydase activity peak (60 units/g) in P. ginseng strain was on day 10. This activity in P. ginseng-B had two peaks on day 15 and day 35 and reached 95 units/g , increasing to 150 units/g to day 80. In strain of P. ginseng-A was only one maximum of this activity -130 units/g on day 45. In P. quinquefolius peroxydase activity was 103 units/g on day 40, increasing to 135 units/g to day 90. For P. quinquefolius-C this activity peak was 136 units/g on day 60. Peroxydase activities for the upper and lower layers of biomass was different and varied considerably from 28-35 units/g in lower to 270-290 units/g for upper layer. The SOD activity had two peaks in P. ginseng strain the 80 units/g and the 70 units/g on day 20 and day 35 respectively. Activity of SOD in P. quinquefolius strain reached 53 units/g on day 40 and increased up to 83 units/g to day 60.The similar increase of SOD activity was marked for P. ginseng-B to 85 units/g on day 90. In P. ginseng strain the 6 molecular isoforms SOD was defined. One of them with RfO,6 was determined in all days of cycle, three other (Rf-0.43; 0.54;0.80) only on day 10 and day 20. The isoform of SOD with Rf-0,29 was detected only on day 10 and with Rf-0,35 only on day 35. The catalase activity decreased in all strains to the last days of cultivation. The changes of SOD, catalase and peroxydase activities reflect the differences between the strains of Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius and their selected forms. The correlation between maximum life span of strains and activities of their antioxydant enzymes were detected.
This experiment was carried out to determine the relationships between maturity and content of the chemical components in flue-cured tobacco. The results were as follows : 1) Among the chemical components, the contents of total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total alkaloids, nicotine, total volatile base, petroleum-ether extract, crude fiber, crude ash, water soluble ash, and chlorine decreased significantly, and those of total sugar, reducing sugar, and starch increased as leaf maturity progressed until the stage of ripeness, but, afterwards, a reverse tendency appeared. 2) There was a significant relationship between maturity and the contents of chemical components, such as total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total volatile base, and the correlation coefficients of them were -0.743, -0.789, -0.797, and -0.642, respectively.
The cost of conventional cultivation of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is very expensive, because shadow condition should be maintained during cultivation periods owing to inherently weak plant for high-temperature. Therefore, application of plant biotechnology may be possible to overcome these difficulties caused by conventional breeding of ginseng. Transgenic plants were produced via Agrobacterium tumefaciens Gv3101, both carrying the binary plasmid pBI121 mLPISO with nptII and Iso (isoprene synthase) gene. Integration of the transgenes into the P. ginseng nuclear genome was confirmed by PCR analysis using nptII primers and Iso primers. RT-PCR result also demonstrated the foreign isoprene synthase gene in three transgenic plant lines (T1, T3, and T5) which was expressed at the transcriptional level. When whole plants of transgenic ginseng were exposed to high temperature at $46^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, a non-transformed plant was wilted from heat shock, whereas a transgenic plant appeared to remain healthy. We suggest that the introduction of exogenous isoprene synthase is considered as alternative methods far generating thermotolerance ginseng.
