  • Background: Airborne fungi are ubiquitous in the air and exposure to an airborne fungus can be a significant risk factor. The composition of fungi has been potentially important for human health, especially for respiratory diseases like asthma and atopic dermatitis. Therefore, we attempted to ascertain what kind of airborne fungi affect human health at a nationwide level. Objectives: This study was carried out to provide information on indoor fungi distribution at multi-use facilities throughout South Korea. Methods: We classified our data by region and public facility after collection, cultivation, and identification via the sequencing of the ITS (internal transcribed spacer) region. We investigated whether or not the proliferation of HaCaT cells was affected by the identified airborne fungi. Results: In our data, the most isolated airborne fungi by region were Penicillium spp (Seoul, Daegu), Periconia sp (Gyeonggi-do), Iprex sp (Gangwon-do), Phanerochaete sp (Busan), Bjerkandera sp (Gwangju), and Aspergillus sp (Jeju-do). In the public facilities, the most detected fungi were Cladosporium sp (public transport), Penicillium sp (apartment house, retail market, financial institution, karaoke room), Bjerokandera sp (underground parking lot, public toilet, medical institution), Periconia sp (retail store), and Fusarium sp (general restaurant). Next, we selected twenty airborne fungi to examine their cytotoxicity and proliferation of human skin cells. In this experiment, the proliferation of the cells was influenced by most of the identified fungi. In case of the cytotoxicity test, most genera except for Rhodotorula sp and Moesziomyces sp showed cytotoxicity in HaCaT cells. Conclusions: The distribution of mold in the indoor air in multi-use facilities in South Korea differs from region to region, and this is an indicator that should be considered in future health impact studies. In addition, as a result of culturing about 20 types of bacteria dominant in indoor air, it was found that most (90%) inhibit the growth of skin cells, which can be harmful to health. An in-depth study of the health effects of floating fungi is needed.

  • Pleurotus eryngii is one of the most promising mushrooms produced on the domestic farms. The quality as well as quantity of Eryngii is sensitively affected by micro climate factors such as temperature, relative humidity, $CO_2$ concentration, and light intensity. To safely produce high-quality Eryngii all the yew round, it is required that the environmental factors be carefully controlled by well designed structures equipped with various facilities and control systems. At the commercial mushroom cultivation houses of permanent frame type (A, B), this study was carried out to find out reasonable range of each environmental factor and yield together with economic and safe structures influencing on the optimal productivity of Eryngii. This experiment was conducted for about two-year ken Nov. 2003 to Dec. 2005 in cultivation house. Ambient temperature during the experiment period was not predominantly different from that of a normal year. The capacity of the hot water boiler and the piping systems were not enough. Because the capacity of electric heater and air circulation were not enough, air temperatures in cultivation house before improvement of system were maintained somewhat lower than setting temperature, and maximum air temperature difference between the upper and lower growth stage during a heating time period was about 5.1. But the air temperatures after system improvement were maintained within the limits range of setting temperature without happening stagnant of air. Air temperature distribution was generally distributed uniform. Relative humidity in cultivation house before , improvement was widely ranged about $44{\sim}100%$. But as the relative humidity after improvement was ranged approximately $80{\sim}100%$, it was maintained within the range of relative humidity recommended. And $CO_2$ concentration was maintained about $400{\sim}3,300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ range. The illuminance in cultivation house was widely distributed in accordance with position, and it was maintained lower than the recommended illuminance range $100{\sim}200lx$. The acidity of midium was some lower range than the recommend acidity range of pH $5.5{\sim}6.5$. The yield was relatively ununiform. In case of bottle capacity of 1,300cc, the mushroom of the lowest grade was less than 3%. The consumption electric energy was quite different according to the cultivation season. The electric energy consumed during heating season was much more than that of cooling season.

  • This study was carried out to: (1) analyze structural stability of representative rain-sheltering greenhouses for large-grain grapevine cultivation with widths of 3.6 m and 5 m in case of using the existing pipe for agriculture; (2) present the optimum specification of pipes in the greenhouse with a width of 5 m under the condition of using the pipe of which ultimate strength has been above $400N{\cdot}mm^{-2}$; (3) evaluate stability and also present the optimum specification of pipes as eaves height was augmented. The above analyses were done for greenhouses with roof vents and also with a main-column interval of 3 m and a rafter interval of 60 cm. First, the existing 3.6 m greenhouse with a rafter of ${\Phi}25.4{\times}1.5t@600$ was stable far a snow-depth of 35 cm but unstable for a wind velocity of $35m{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Meanwhile the existing 5 m greenhouse with the same rafter was not stable for a wind velocity of $335m{\cdot}s^{-1}$ as well as a snow-depth of 35 cm. This meant that existing greenhouses had to be reinforced to secure stability. Second, the specification of pipes, especially rafter, could be classified as two cases. One had a structural stability at a safe wind velocity of $35m{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and a safe snow-depth of 40 cm for which stability the rafter had to be ${\Phi}31.8{\times}1.5t@600$, and the other had a stability at $30m{\cdot}s^{-1}-35cm$ at the specification of rafter ${\Phi}25.4{\times}1.5t@600$. Finally, eaves height had a significant effect on safe wind velocity. But it had little influence on safe snow-depth. The results showed that the specification of side-wall pipes had to be reinforced for the safe side velocity accord-ing to the increment of eaves height and similarly the specification of fore-end post far the safe fore-end velocity.

  • This study established a land-cover classification method on objects using satellite images, and figured out distributional patterns of land cover according to categories through spatial statistics techniques. Object-based classification generated each land cover classification map by spectral information, texture information, and the combination of the two. Through assessment of accuracy, we selected optimum land cover classification map. Also, to figure out spatial distribution pattern of land cover according to categories, we analyzed hot spots and quantified them. Optimal weight for an object-based classification has been selected as the Scale 52, Shape 0.4, Color 0.6, Compactness 0.5, Smoothness 0.5. In case of using the combination of spectral information and texture information, the land cover classification map showed the best overall classification accuracy. Particularly in case of dry fields, protected cultivation, and bare lands, the accuracy has increased about 12 percent more than when we used only spectral information. Forest, paddy fields, transportation facilities, grasslands, dry fields, bare lands, buildings, water and protected cultivation in order of the higher area ratio of DMZ according to categories. Particularly, dry field sand transportation facilities in Yanggu occurred mainly in north areas of the civilian control line. dry fields in Cheorwon, forest and transportation facilities in Inje fulfilled actively in south areas of the civilian control line. In case of distributional patterns according to categories, hot spot of paddy fields, dry fields and protected cultivation, which is related to agriculture, was distributed intensively in plains of Yanggu and in basin areas of Cheorwon. Hot spot areas of bare lands, waters, buildings and roads have similar distribution patterns with hot spot areas related to agriculture, while hot spot areas of bare lands, water, buildings and roads have different distributional patterns with hot spot areas of forest and grasslands.

  • Technical efficiency of semiforcing watermelon growers is 0.8248 on average, and distributed between 0.6744 and 0.9268. The result showed that semiforcing watermelon growers had by 18% of technical inefficiency and could be assumed that increasing technical efficiency could induce watermelon production more increase. Consequently, if growers' technical efficiency were improved while other environments were constant, watermelon production could be increased. Following the results from the inefficiency effect model, all assumption coefficient such as growers age etc, are significant at 10% level. Estimate of dispersion parameter ${\gamma}$ is 0.89, which confirms those differences between practical output and frontier output were derived from the technical efficiencies among growers. Differences of production system between high and low level growers in production efficiency were showed at side altitude, ventilation and heat-retaining in section of facilities and automation, soil test and calcium application in section of environment management, transplant preparation and duration of pollination in section of crop management and shipment place, sorting degree and management record analysis in section of business management respectively. As a result of analyzing consulting data by using standard diagnosis table of watermelon cultivation under structure which cultivated on semi-forced watermelon growers, gap between high and low level growers was 7.0 points in facility automation section, 7.1 points in environment section, 8.8 points in crop management section and 13.6 points in business management section, respectively, which were the biggest one among them. In case of excluding information-related items from the evaluation index of business management section, changes of business achievement are to occur. Therefore, it is recommended for us to review the standard diagnostic table of watermelon cultivation under structure by dividing evaluation index of management section into management and information.

  • Optical and microwave remote sensing data have been widely used in land cover and land use classification. Thanks to the spectral absorption characteristics of ground object in visible and near infrared region, optical data enables to extract different land cover types according to their material composition like water body, vegetation cover or bare land. On the other hand, microwave sensor receives backscatter radiance which contains information on surface roughness, object density and their 3-D structure that are very important complementary information to interpret land use and land cover. Separate use of these data have brought many successful results in practice. However, the accuracy of the land use / land cover established by this methodology still has some problems. One of the way to improve accuracy of the land use / land cover classification is just combination of both optical and microwave data in analysis. In this paper for the research, the author used LANDSAT TM scene 127/45 acquired on October 21, 1992, JERS-1 SAR scene 119/265 acquired on October 27, 1992 and aerial photographs taken on October 21, 1992. The study area has been selected in Hanoi City and surrounding area, Vietnam. This is a flat agricultural area with various land use types as water rice, secondary crops like maize, cassava, vegetables cultivation as cucumber, tomato etc. mixed with human settlement and some manufacture facilities as brick and ceramic factories. The use of only optical or microwave data could result in misclassification among some land use features as settlement and vegetables cultivation using frame stages. By combination of multitemporal JERS-1 SAR and TM data these errors have been eliminated so that accuracy of the final land use / land cover map has been improved. The paper describes a methodology for data combination and presents results achieved by the proposed approach.

  • As of 2018, total yield of lettuce and strawberry amounted to 93,543 tons (representing 1.0 percent) and 183,639 tons (2.0 percent), respectively, among total yields worth 9,185,889 tons in South Korea. Lettuce is affected by a combination of numerous elements such as varieties, cultivation methods and pests during each growth phase (Lee et al., 1999). It is mainly cultivated in spring and fall. Especially due to respiration rate after harvest leading to reduced quality and poor storage, maintaining annual supply is unavailable (Jang et al., 2018). With the distribution of new varieties, forcing culture and indoor insulated facilities for plant cultivation during winter, strawberries are produced every year except for late summer and early fall. Due to active respiration, transpiration, soft flesh and high water content, the fruit is vulnerable to go bad and got rotten compared to other fruits. Furthermore, it is difficult to maintain freshness due to the possibility of softening, discoloration and fungi (Lee et al., 2012). In this regard, developing improved storage and package techniques is needed to ensure maintaining quality and safety even just two to three days after harvest. In order to ensure improved quality and safety of strawberries and lettuce after harvest, the present study applied a modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) technology (Mostofi et. al., 2008). Going forward, it compared the quality and safety of the two products while being stored in a way that put them in an MAP-applied container and a plastic container at room temperature and 4 degree Celsius.

  • In the recent years, protected horticultural facilities have been modernized and glasshouses are also propagating in Korea, even most vegetables production are conducted in the traditional plastic houses covered with, for example, PVC film for just temperature keeping. It would limit the productivity and competitivity of the vegetable production industry without automatization and high quality year round production. A plant factory, aimed to produce vegetables in the limited areas, was initiated in Christensen farm, Denmark in 1957, and widely propagated in some developed countries. As it has the automatized system which enables to keep optimized environment conditions, it will be the best facility for high quality products as well as year round planned production. However, we have not even started the plant factory production. Since the plant factory is requiring lots of resources, besides plant cultivation technologies, such as environment control, automatic engineering and robotics, our approach to the development of plant factories should be minded on Practical Plant Factories considering our current farming practices and least capital needs rather than blindly employing the advanced technologies from developed countries. Thus, Korean plant factory development can be initiated with year round leaf vegetables production in NFT or DFT cultivation system instead of the moval bed system, in which aerial environment factors such as light, temperature, humidity and CO$_2$ concentration and root environment ones such as solution concentration, temperature, pH and water soluble oxygen shall be automatically controlled. And the seeding, seedling and transplanting operations shall be accomplished in the house entrance, and the harvesting and grading opreations shall be conducted in the house exit. For practical plant factories, environment control technologies including artificial light source, illumination and air conditioning, automatic management for nutrient solution and automatic production line of moval bed system, transplanting and harvest should be developed along with researches on the cost reduction of factory building construction.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a database of weather, hydrology, point source pollution management, reservoir release and tillage management for SWAT model evaluation of Anseongcheon watershed ($370.1km^2$, the upstream of Gongdo water level gauging station), and to use them for the following research of future climate and land use change impact on streamflow and stream water quality. It is expected that the database can achieve the practical analysis of current watershed hydrologic and environmental condition. The model calibration and validation were conducted using the constructed database. The model results showed that the tillage management affected the temporal shift of pollutant loads, and changed the flow pattern of pollutant transport through cultivation area. It was identified that the April and May irrigation water supply from the agricultural reservoir also affected the streamflow of downstream. The data application of pollutants treatment facilities and tillage management of cultivation area showed about 10% difference in the simulation results of stream water quality. The data establishment of agricultural reservoir operation, the tillage management of cultivated area within the watershed and the attributes inclusion of pollutants treatment facilities were proved to be important in SWAT model evaluation. The results of model setup in this study are expected for more reliable model application in the following research of future climate and land use change impact on hydrology and stream water quality of the study watershed.
