Fabrication of Nano-sized Metal Dispersed Magnesia Based Composites and Related Mechanical and Magnetic Properties

  • MgO/metal nanocomposite powder mixtures were prepared by solution chemical processes to obtain suitable structure for ceramic/metal nanocomposites. Nickel or cobalt nitrate, as a source of metal dispersion, was dissolved into alcohol and mixed with magnesia powder. After calcined in air, these powders were reduced by hydrogen. Densified nanocomposites were successively obtained by Pulse Electric Current Sintering (PECS) process. The dispersed metal partical size depended on temperature and time in calcination and reduction processes. The phase analyses in the synthesized powders as a functioni of temperature were tracked using a dynamic high temperature X-ray diffractioni (HTXRD) system. Phase and crystallite size analyses were done using X-ray diffractioni and TEM. The MgO/metal nanocomposites were successfully fabricated, and ferromagnetic responses with enhanced coercive force were also investigated for these composites.

  • The forming reaction processes of magnesium aluminate spinel by a thermal decomposition of sulfate hydrate were studied with DTA, TG. SEM and X-ray powder diffraction methods. The hydrous salt composed of the mixture of the two compounds of $MgSO_4$ $6H_2O$ and ${AL_2}({SO_4})_17H_2O_3$ in which both sulfates were crystalline. On heating the hydrous slat the crystalline magnesium and aluminum sulfate anhydride to amorphous alumina magnesium sulfate anhydride decomposed to amorphous magnesia and these amorphous oxides reacted completely each other to form a spinel at $1000^{\circ}C$ The apparent activation energy of forming reaction of spinel was 36.5 kcal/mole($900^{\circ}C$~$1000^{\circ}C$) The crystallite size of spinel obtained at $1000^{\circ}C$ after 1 h was 380$\AA$.

염화티타늄(III)으로부터 질화티타늄 미분체의 합성 (Preparation of Fine Titanium Nitride Powders from Titanium Trichloride)

  • The preparatin of the fine TiN powders by reduction-nitridation of TiCl3-Al-N2 system was attempted in the temperature range from 350$^{\circ}$to 100$0^{\circ}C$. The formation mechanism and kinetics of TiN were examined, and the resultant TiN powder was characterized by means of XRD, PSA and SEM-EPMA methods. TiN was formed at temperatrue higher than $600^{\circ}C$. As an intermediate phase, AlTi was obtained. The apparent activation energy for the formation of TiN was approximately 4.2kcal/mole(600$^{\circ}$~90$0^{\circ}C$). The crystallite size and lattice constnat of TiN powder obtained in the temperature range from 600$^{\circ}$to 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h at the Al/TiCl3 molar ratio of 1.0 were 160~255A and 4.231~4.239A, respectively. According to PSA measurement, the mean particle size ranged from 14.0 to 14.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

염화철과 탄산나트륨 용액에 의한 철 침전물의 열반응 (Thermal Reaction of Iron Precipitates Prepared by Adding Sodium Carbonate Solution to Ferrous Chloride and Ferric Chloride Solutions)

  • The iron precipitates were prepared by adding sodium carbonate solution to ferrous chloride and ferric chloride solutions to pH=9 and pH=4.5, respectively. The thermal reaction of the iron precipitates was investigated by means of TGA, DTA and X-ray diffraction. In the former the crystallization of $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ begins at about 35$0^{\circ}C$, while in the latter at about 30$0^{\circ}C$, during the calclnation in air. In the iron precipitate from ferrous chloride solution, the activation energy for the crystallite-growth or $\alpha$-TEX>$Fe_2O_3$ in air is about 7.6$\times$104J/mole between 800 and 100$0^{\circ}C$. As the result of X-ray diffration for the reduction product of hematite, it was found that maghemite, magnetite and wustite are formed and that hematite is transformed to magnetite through maghemite.

  • Microstructural and mechanical properties of the TiN films deposited on Si substrates under various substrate bias voltages by a reactive magnetron sputtering have been studied. It was found that the crystallographic texture, microstructural morphology and mechanical property of the TiN films were strongly depended on the substrate bias voltage. TiN films deposited without bias exhibited a mixed (200)-(111) texture with a strong (200) texture, which subsequently changed to a strong (111) texture with increasing bias voltage. It is also observed that the crystallite size decreases with increasing bias voltage, which corresponds to the increasing diffraction peak width of XRD patterns. The average surface roughness was calculated from AFM images of the films; these results indicated that the average surface roughness was increased with an increase in the bias voltage of the coatings.

  • Diamond thin films were deposited on n-type (100) Si wafers from $H_2-CH_4$ gas mixture by rf PACVD. Prior to deposition, mechanical scratching was done to improve density of nucleation sites with diamond paste of 3${\mu}m$. The microstructure of deposited diamond thin films was studied by using the following conditions : discharge power of 500W, $H_2$ flow rate of 50sccm, reaction pressure of 20torr, and $CH_4/H_2$ ratio of 0.3$\sim$1%. The deposited diamond thin films showed that the crystallite was increased at the lower methane concentration. The deposited thin films were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Raman Spectroscopy and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.

Dependence of Structural and Magnetic Properties on Annealing Times in Co-precipitated Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles

  • Modifications in the structural and magnetic properties of co-precipitated cobalt ferrite nanoparticles can be accomplished by varying the annealing time periods during the synthetic process. Experimental results show that high-purity cobalt ferrite nanoparticles are obtained using a co-precipitation process. The dependence of the crystallite sizes on the annealing time was successfully demonstrated using XRD and SEM. Finally, vibrating sample magnetometer analyses show that the magnetic properties of the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles depend on their relative particle sizes.

  • High temperature deformation behavior of Al85Ni10Y5 alloy extrudates fabricated with amorphous ribbons was investigated at temperature range form 300 to 550$^{\circ}C$ by torsion tests. Thermal properties of amorphous ribbons as a function of aging temperature was studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC). The Al phase crystallite firstly formed in the amorphous ribbons and its crystallization temperature(Tx) was ∼210$^{\circ}C$. During the processings of consolidation and extrusion, nano-grained structure was formed in the Al85Ni10Y5 alloy extrudates. The as-extrudated Al85Ni10Y5 alloy and the Al85Ni10Y5 alloy annealed at 250$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed the flow curve of DRV(dynamic recovery) during hot deformation at 400-550$^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the Al85Ni10Y5 alloy annealed at 400$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed the flow curve of DRX(dynamic recrystallization) during hot deformation at 450-500$^{\circ}C$.

화학증착 탄화규소막의 방향성과 미세구조가 증착층의 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Preferred Orientation and Microstructure on Mechanical Properties of Chemically Vapor Deposited SiC)

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) films have been deposited on the isotropic graphite by chemical vapor deposition. Change of deposition parameters affected significantly the microstructure and preferred orientation of SiC films. Preferred orientation of SiC films was (111) or (220), and microstructure showed the startified structure consisting of small crystallite or faceted columnar structure depending on the deposition parameters. For microhardness, (111) oriented film and stratified structure were superior to (220) oriented film and faceted columnar structure, respectively. Surface of (111) oriented films was less rough than that of (220) oriented films. Adhesion force between graphite substrate and SiC films was above 100N for crystalline films and 49N for amorphous film.

현무암을 이용한 Glass-Ceramics (Basalt Glass-Ceramics)

  • Crystallization phenomena of glasses of fused natural basalt rocks were studied by DTA, X-ray phase analysis, electron microscopy, and other techniques. Crystallization was catalyzed by the addition of either chromite ore or $P_2O_5$, both up to 5 wt %. Various heat treatments were used, and their influences on controlling the microstructures and properties of the products were studied to develop high strength glass-ceramic material of the $CaO-Al_2O_3(Fe_2O_3)-MgO(FeO)-SiO_2$ system from the domestic basalts. Magnetite precipitates were found to be a nucleation initiator in every case of the crystallization. Diopside, anorthite, clinoenstatite and monticellite were identified as silicate crystalline phases contained in the crystallized products. The crystallite size was in the range of 0.1-2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$. The fine crystallites were approximately cubic, but large crystallites were either plate or needle shape. The thermal expansion coefficient, microhardness and modulus of rupture of glass-ceramics were ranged from 78.5 to 81.8$\times$10-7 cm/cm/$^{\circ}C$, from 820 to 930kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$, and from 1800 to 2800kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively.
