This study reports petrography and geochemical characteristics of the Cretaceous volcanic rocks that are distributed in the vicinity of the Cheonsungsan area, Yangsan-Gun, Gyeongsangnam-Do. The Cretaceous volcanic rocks composed of andesitic rocks, Wonhyosan tuff, Cheonsungsan tuff in ascending order. Sedimentary rock is the basement in the study area cofered with volcanic rocks. These volcanic rocks are Wonhyosan tuff and Cheonsungsan tuff that represented the early phase of the Bulgugsa igneous activity. Wonhyosan tuff are classified into dacite tuff and dacite welded tuff based on the rock texture and their mineral composition. They are covered with Cheonsungsan tuff. Dacite tuff composed of lithic lapilli ash-flow tuff and vitric ash-flow tuff. Most dacite welded tuff are lapilli ash-flow tuff. Cheonsungsan tuff overlying the Wonhyosan tuff consists of rhyolite tuff and rhyolite welded tuff. Rhyolite tuff are lithic crystal ash-flow tuff and crystal vitric ash-flow tuff with somewhat accidental fragments of andesitic and sedimentary rocks. Rhyolite welded tuff is distinguishe from rhyolite tuff by is typical eelded fabrics and its rock color. According to petrochemical data, the volcanic rocks in study area belong to high-K orogenic suties. On the discriminant diagrams such as La/Yb versus Th/Yb, these rocks falls into the discriminant fields for the normal continental margin arc.
The west stone pagoda of Gameunssji temple site (National Treasure No. 112) has been damaged mainly by fracture, exfoliation and granular disintegration. In this study, the source area of the rocks using the west stone pagoda was examined in terms of petrological feature, magnetic susceptibility, and ${\gamma}-ray$ spectrometer. The stones include abundant crystal fragments of biotite, quartz and feldspars in the fine-grained matrix; they are petrographically discriminated to vitric-crystal tuff or crystal tuff. Measured magnetic susceptibility values are of from 10 to 20 $({\times}10^{-3}\;SI\;unit)$. From the ${\gamma}-ray$ spectrometer measurement K, eU, and eTh contents of the stones are about 3%, 0 to 8ppm, and 9 to 18 ppm, respectively. These features are used as indicators to presume the source area of the stones. Comparing the petrographical and chemical characteristics between the stones of the west stone pagoda and the country rocks near the Gameunsaji temple site, it is suggested that the most similar country rock to the stones could be dacitic volcanic rocks of the Beomgokri group in the Waeup basin. The Beomgokri group is lithostratigraphically divided into Waeupri tuff, Yongdongri tuff and Beomgokri volcanic rocks. Among the three rocks, the crystal tuff of the Beomgokri volcanic rocks seems likely to have been the source rock of the stones of the west stone pagoda.
The effects of fractures in rock masses on the groundwater flow and the groundwater flow system in the volcanic rocks are analyzed by GFFP-WT model, which allows more realistic analysis of groundwater system by considering the fractures in rock masses. The evaluation of the effects of fractures in rock masses on the groundwater flow has been carried out in the 2nd Yeonwha and resulted in that the fractures mostly influence flow time because of hydraulic head distribution change. The results of the groundwater flow system analysis in the volcanic rocks are as follows. Most of groundwater once flowed in Lapilli tuff flowed out through Lappilli tuff layer. But only a small fraction of water flowed out through crystal tuff layer.
Even though Mesozoic Mudeungsan tuff, located within Neungju Basin, has been named several rock names, it should be named as Mudeungsan tuff due to several evidences, such as fiamme, welded texture and rock fragments in the Mudeungsan tuff. Volcanic eruption boundary between the Cheonwangbong and Anyangsan areas is not clear, but petrochemical and mineral chemical evidences with different ages indicate clear petrological boundary between Cheonwangbong and Anyangsan. The Mudeungsan tuffs from Cheonwangbong and Anyangsan is welded crystal tuff with dacitic composition and were generated from cogenetic calc-alkaline magma in the volcanic arc environment. Geochemical events indicate that magma beneath Cheonwangbong was seems to have been evolved from the magma beneath Anyangsan due to fractional crystallization dominated by plagioclase.
The volcanic rocks in Saryangdo area are composed of Witseom Andesite, Punghwari Tuff, Araetseom Andesite, Obido Formation, Namsan Rhyolite and Saryangdo Tuff in ascending order. The volcanic rocks has a range of andesite-rhyodacite-rhyolite, which indicates calc-alkaline series and volcanic arc of orogenic belt. In Harker diagrams for trace element and REE pattern, these are also distinguished into so three groups(Witseom Andesite, Araetseom Andesite and Saryangdo Tuff) that each unit is interpreted to have originated in different magma chamber. The Saryangdo Tuff exhibits systematically(chemical zonations that gradually change) from lower dacite to upper rhyolite in section. The systematic sequence of compositional variations suggests that the tuffs were formed by successive eruptions of upper to lower part of a zoned magma chamber in which relatively dacitic magma is surrounded around rhyolitic magma of the central part. The zoned magma chamber was formed from marginal accretion and crystal settling that resulted form magmatic differentiations by fractional crystallization.
The Kusandong Tuff, known as a representative key bed in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, is a crystal-rich tuff of pyroclastic flow and surge origin. It is 1-4 m thick and laterally extends for more than 200 km intercalated in the upper part of the Hayang Croup. Observations and analyses of the feldspar crystals in the tuff, using polarizing microscopes, EPMA, and BSE images, reveal that the plagioclase crystals in the tuff were completely albitized (>$97\%$ Ab) whereas those in the southernmost localities where the tuff is rich in fine ash matrix are unaltered or partly albitized. K-feldspars are partly albitized at all localities, irrespective of the matrix content of the tuff, Perthitic textures, chessboard twinning, albitization along micro-fractures and cleavages, and the relationship between matrix content and the degree of albitization suggest that feldspars in the Kusandong Tuff were albitized by Na-rich fluid after burial. Albitization is interpreted to start preferentially along micro-fractures and cleavages and be hampered in matrix-rich tuffs with a low permeability. Original composition of the plagioclases in the Kusandong Tuff is also interpreted to have ranged between oligoclase and andesine ($Ab_{62.5}-Ab_{83.3}$) before the albitization.
The Latite Ridge Latite in the East Tintic volcanic field, Utah in USA occurs as a welded ash-flow tuff, has 63.7-66 wt% $SiO_2$ on an anhydrous basis, and shows calc-alkaline affinities. The rocks fall in the trachyte field of IUGS classification. It is characterized by unusally high $K_2O$ content (5.9-7.6 wt%), relatively high equilibration temperature (950-973$^{\circ}C$), and biotites with high $TiO_2$ content (7.4-8.2wt%). Various differentiation processes were tested using the XLFRAC program to infer the origin of the Latite Ridge Latite. The results suggests that crystal fractionation from shoshonite is one possible process to generate the Latite Ridge Latite. Shoshonite of the East Tintic volcanic field was possibly formed by crystal fractionation from a subduction-related K-, Mg-rich mafic magma.
The Myeonbongsan caldera, 10.2X8.0 km, developed within older sequences of sedimentary formations and intermediate composition volcanis in the southern Cheongsong area. Volcanic rocks in the caldera block include lower intermediate volcanics, middle tuffaceous sequences and upper silicic ones. The silicic volcanics, which is named Myeonbongsan Tuff, are composed of crystal-rich ash-flow tuff(300 m) , bedded tuff(30 m) and pumice-rich ash-flow tuff(700 m) in ascending order. Several intrusions dominate the early sequences within the caldera. The caldera collapsed in a trapdoor type when silicic ash-flow tuffs erupted fro major vent area in the caldera. Normal faulting along a ring fault system except the southwestern part dropped the tuffs down to the northrase with a maximum displacement of about 820 m. The Myeonbongsan Tuff is just about 1,030 m thick inside the northeastern caldera, with its base not exposed, and southwestward thinning down. Rhyolitic plug and ring dikes are emplaced along the central vent and the caldera margins, and the ring dikes are cut by plutonic stocks in the southeastern and northwestern parts. The caldera volcanism eviscerated the magma chamber by a series of explosive eruptions during which silicic magma was erupted to form the Myeonbongsan Tuff. Following the last ash-flow eruption, collapse of the chamber roof resulted in the formation of the Myeonbongsan caldera, a subcircular trapdoor-type depression subsiding about 820 m deep. After the collapse, stony to flow-banded rhyolites were emplaced as circular plugs and ring dikes along the central vent and the caldera margins respectively. Finally after the intrusions, another plutons were emplaced as stocks outside the caldera.
This study reports the results about the petrography and geochemical characteristics of 10 representative volacanic rocks. The Cretaceous volcanic rocks distributed in the vicinity of the Kageo island composed of andesitic rocks, dacitic welded tuff, and rhyolitic rocks in ascending order. Sedimentary rock is the basement in the study area covered with volcanic rocks. Andesitic rocks composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia, lithic lapilli tuff and cryptocrystallin lava-flow. Most dacitic rocks are lapilli ash-flow welded tuff. Rhyolitic rocks consists of rhyolite tuff and rhyolite lava flow. Rhyolite tuff are lithic crystal ash-flow tuff and crystal vitric ash-flow tuff with somewhat accidental fragments of andesitic rocks, but dacitic rocks. The variation of major and trace element of the volcanic rocks show that contents of $Al_2O_3$, FeO, CaO, MgO, $TiO_2$ decrease with increasing of $SiO_2$. On the basis of Variation diagrams such as $Al_2O_3$ vs. CaO, Th/Yb vs. Ta/Yb, and $Ce_N/YB_N$ vs. $Ce_N$, these rocks represent mainly differentiation trend of calc-alkaline rock series. On the discriminant diagrams such as Ba/La and La/Th ratio, Rb vs. Y + Nb, the volcanic rocks in study area belongs to high-K Orogenic suites, with abundances of trace element and ternary diagram of K, Na, Ca. According to the tectonic discriminant diagram by Wood, these rocks falls into the diestructructive continental margin. K-Ar ages of whole rocks are from andesite to rhyolite $97.0{\pm}6.8~94.5{\pm}6.6,\68.9{\pm}4.8,\61.5{\pm}4.9~60.7{\pm}4.2$ Ma, repectively. Volcanic rocks in study area show well correlation to the Yucheon Group in terms of rock age dating and geochemcial data, and derived from andesitic calc-alkaline magma that undergone low pressure fractional crystallization dominated plagioclase at <30km.
By the analysis of discontinuity at the outcrop and lineament on the satellite image, the joints have deeply relationship with the lineaments. The joint spaces at the drilling core are mostly 1~20 cm but at the rhyolite which is distributed near fault they have more closely. These volcanic rocks belong to the subalkaline series tuff, rhyolite, basalt in the study area from the diagram of $Nb/Y-Zr/TiO_2$. The composition diagram of Hf/3-Th-Nb/16 show destructive plate-margin basalt and their differentiates. The environment of formation of volcanics are normal continental arc. Most of LREE show high enriched pattern but HREE show depleted pattern. The K/Ar age of intermediate volcanics, tuff, rhyolite, crystal tuff are 55.3Ma, 77.25 Ma~91.22Ma, 63.16~64.39Ma, 54.49 Ma respectively.
