  • Zinc selenide (ZnSe) single crystals hold promise for many electro-optics, acousto-optic and green laser generation applications. This material is prepared in closed ampoules by the physical vapor transport (PVT) growth method based on the dissociative sublimation. We investigate the effects of diffusive-convection on the crystal growth rate of ZnSe with a low vapor pressure system in a horizontal configuration. Our results show that for the ratios of partial pressures, s=0.2 and 2.9, the growth rate increases with the Peclet number and the temperature differences between the source and crystal. As the ratio of partial pressures approaches the stoichiometric value of 2, the rate increases. The mass fluk based on one dimensional (1D model) flow for low vapor pressure system fall within the range of the predictions (2D model) obtained by solving the coupled set of conservation equations, which indicates the flow fields would be advective-diffusive. Therefore, the rate and the flow fields are independent of gravity acceleration levels.

  • Crystal A and B were isolated from L. pseudo-leave Nakai and their pharmacological action was observed. Crystal A, in dose of 5 * $10^{-4}$ - 5 * $10^{-5}g/ml$, stimulated excised frog heat but at 2.5 * $10^{-6}$ - 0.5 * $10^{-5}g/ml$ of crystal B, depressant effect was observed. Mild stimulation of rhythmicity of exercised rabbit intestine was produced by 1 * $10^{-4}$ g/ml of crystal A and 2 * $10^{-4}g/ml$ of crystal B. Marked depression of tone was produced by 2 * $10^{-4}g/ml$ of crystal A, antagonizing by pilocarpine. Crystal B(4 * $10^{-4}gm/l)produced$ mild stimulation, followed by depression of tone. No curare-like action on excised frog abdominal muscle was elicited with both substances.

  • A quartz crystal analyzer is utilized to monitor the corrosion process of an aluminum surface of a quartz crystal for marine sensor by sea water. A quartz crystal having 2000 $\AA$ of aluminum layer is installed in a specially designed cell and is in contact with sea water imitated electrolyte solution. While a constant potential is applied to the cell, the resonant frequency and resonant resistance are simultaneously measured using the quartz crystal analyzer. In addition, surface topographs are taken with an atomic force microscope(AFM) and the element analysis of the surface is conducted using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDX). The simultaneous measurement of resonant frequency and resonant resistance during the corrosion process explains the change of surface structure caused by the corrosion. The variation of resonant frequency addresses the amount surface metal dissolution. As a conclusion, it is found that a simple measurement using the quartz crystal analyzer can replace the complex monitoring employing large equipments in the investigation of a corrosion process of sensor surface.

  • Well-aligned nanowire arrays can be used as building blocks for nanoscale device. Recently, we reported that well-aligned single-crystal organic nanowires has been created by using a direct printing method which is named liquid-bridge mediated nanotransfer molding (LB-nTM). Moreover, multi-layering nanostructures can be fabricated by repeating this printing process. As a result, it is possible to make simple and basic concept of heterojunction devices such as crossed nanowire devices. We fabricated crossed single-crystal organic nanowires nanojunction devices from 6,13-bis (triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-PEN) and fullerene (C60) single-crystal nanowires using by direct printing method in solution process. Crossed TIPSPEN/ C60 single-crystal nanowires diode has rectifying behavior with on/off ratios of ~13. In addition, the device shows photodiode characteristics as well as rectification. Our study represent methodology of heterojunction devices using single-crystal nanowires, thereby provide a new direction of future nanoelectronics.

  • In this paper, we describe the fabrication process of a photonic crystal fiber and present the measured optical properties of the photonic crystal fiber. The fabrication of the photonic crystal fiber involves stacking, jacketing, collapsing, and drawing using a conventional drawing tower The photonic crystal fiber drawing needs higher tension to maintain the uniform air hole structure. Thus, the temperature of the photonic crystal fiber drawing is lowered by a few hundred degrees Celsius than for the case of conventional optical fiber drawing. The optical properties of the fabricated photonic crystal fiber such as mode profile, optical loss, transmission spectrum, bending loss, and polarization dependent loss are measured.

  • It has been submitted that different ion solutions containing sulfate induce crystal growth and might substitute conventional acid etching for pretreatment of enamel in orthodontic bonding(${\AA}rtun$ et al., Am. J. Orthod. 85, 333, 1984). This investigation was designed to evaluate the relevance of crystal growth on the enamel surface as an alternative to conventional acid etching in direct bonding of orthodontic brackets. Annexing Li2SO4, MgSO4, K2SO4 respectively in the solution with $25\%$ polyacrylic md 0.3M sulfuric acids were employed to enhance the crystal growth. Human bicuspids were treated with various parameters as combinations of crystal growth and glass ionomer cement, crystal growth and orthodontic resin, acid etching and orthodontic resin for an investigative purpose. Crystal growth solution containing MgSO4 showed the highest shear bond strength(15.6MPa) within the groups of bonding brackets with glass ionomer cement(p<0.01). Bonding with glass ionomer cement on the surface of crystal growth demonstrated higher shear bond strength than with orthodontic resin(p<0.001). Bonding with glass ionomer cement on the surface treated with crystal growth solution containing MgSO4 or K2SO4 was not different shear bond strength statistically from bonding with orthodontic resin on the acid-etched surface. It suggests that bonding brackets with glass ionomer cement on the surface treated with crystal growth solution containing MgSO4 or K2SO4 is a potential alternative to bonding with resin on the acid etched sufrace.

  • We present 2D slab silicon-based photonic crystal optical insulator to enhance light emission efficiency of light-emitting diode (LED). A 2D slab silicon photonic crystal is designed in such a way that light emitting diode die can be placed in the middle of the silicon photonic crystal. The device creates light propagation forbidden region in horizontal plane for Transverse Electric (TE) light with the wavelength range of 450 nm to 600 nm.

  • Computer simulations have played a central role in the development of our understanding of the atomic scale processes involved in crystal growth. The assumptions underlying computer modeling will be discussed and our recent work on modeling of the kinetic formation of thermodynamically unstable phases in alloys or mixtures will be reviewed. Our Monte Carlo computer simulations have reproduced the experimental results on the rapid recrystallization of laser-melted doped silicon. An analytical model for this phenomenon has been developed, and its applicability to other materials will be discussed.

  • Core loss of soft magnetic powder cores have been focused on to achieve high efficiency of power supplies. In this study the effects of crystal grain size on core loss were investigated by changing heat treatment conditions. It was found that core loss is influenced by crystal grain size because eddy current loss decreased and hysteresis loss increased by making crystal grain size smaller, and it is also influenced by particle size.
