  • It has been known that cruise tourism adds value in the local industry and its impacts on regional economy are tremendous. From this point of view, identifying services provided by a cruise ship port, cruise tourists' satisfaction, and their behavioral intentions are significant issues at cruse destinations. The main purpose of this study was to identify significant service factors at the cruise ship port that have an influence on cruise tourists' satisfaction and loyalty in Jeju Island. To achieve the study purpose, a structured survey questionnaire was developed on the basis of reviewing related literatures. The survey was conducted through personal interviews at the Jeju Cruise Ship Port. In total, 386 useable samples were collected during the period from September 11 to October 29, 2012. According to the factor analysis using 15 attributes related to services at a cruise ship port, three service factors were extracted: (1) infra-services, (2) shore excursion services, and (3) attributes affecting the selection of shore excursions. Regression analyses indicated that two service factors(shore excursion services and attributes affecting the selection of shore excursions) significantly influence cruise tourists' satisfaction and loyalty. Findings in this study may be insightful and useful information to marketers or managers at cruise ship ports.

  • Despite the remarkable continual growth of the world cruise industry, studies have yet to be attempted on many revenue management problems in cruise operations. This paper suggests two schemes that can be easily applied to cruise revenue management: optimal dual pricing and passenger safety level. In optimal dual pricing, a pair of higher and lower prices is applied to cabin reservation through market segmentation. This scheme can be executed with a linear price-response function for the current unreserved cabins. A cruise line could benefit from this scheme to maximize reservation revenue while attaining full occupancy. The dual pricing scheme is also devised to produce only integer demands to suit real management practices. The life boat capacity is an additional service capacity unique to the cruise industry, catering to passengers' safety. The concept of passenger safety level is defined and computed for any passenger life boat capacity of a cruise ship. It can be used to evaluate the passenger safety of a cruise ship in operation, as well as to determine the number of life boat seats required for a new cruise ship. Hypothetical examples are used to illustrate the operation of these two schemes.

  • The present study considers the prediction of wind-induced heel of cruise ship and its stabilization. Wind load in ocean exerts on the surface of superstructure of cruise ship, which causes the heel moment on the ship. The calculation of wind load starts from choosing wind speed profile, so that the logarithmic wind profile model is applied in this study. Heel moment by wind load is calculated by adopting approximate formulation and applied to the ship motion analysis in time domain. Motion stabilizers, such as stabilizing fin and U-tube tank, are considered to reduce the heel effect as well as excessive roll motion. From this study, it is expected that the present method can be applied to the prediction and stabilization of the heel motion of cruise ships.

  • year in Europe and Asia. Therefore the introduction of new ships continues at a great rate. There is a definite trend toward either large ships or smaller, more luxurious vessels in cruise industry. The day to design and build the large cruise vessel is coming to Korean shipyards, sooner or later. The most important thing to design large cruise vessel is to have a correct comprehension about the feature of cruise vessel, especially of the passenger accommodation area in cruise vessel. This paper is on the spatial features of the passenger accommodation area in cruise vessel. General arrangement drawings, deck plans and technical data of the newest large cruise ships are analysed to understand the spatial features and induce the direction of space planning of passenger accommodation area for the large cruise ship of tomorrow.

  • This study introduces a new cruise ship design model with residence concept by carrying out a specific design procedure on the regionally and culturally characterized cruise model. Cruise ship design requires a combined approach with architectural design skills, shipbuilding techniques and even the knowledge of business management. Contrary to the traditional cargo ship design in which the design of residence area on the top of cruise ship is performed first and then the lower part of the ship structure is determined as a final step, a top-down procedure for the conceptual ship design is adopted.

  • According to a progress in the quality of life and economy, recent years have seen an increase in interest in the cruise travel. However, it is important to provide them the optimum embarkation environment since there are to be many and unspecified persons staying for a long period on the cruise ship. In the architectural design field, a wide range of efforts are being recently made to meet customer's requirements by considering the rapidly changing society, environment, and economic trend. The most representative one of such efforts is the inclusive design concept. This concept means to perform design satisfying all the function, convenience, aesthetic appreciation, and utility, regardless of sex, age, ability, nationality, cultural background or any kinds of disabilities. Regarding this trend, the convenience-oriented design of a cruise ship using the inclusive design concept was performed in this study. To do this, the composition of cabins and swimming pools, and the exterior of the cruise ship were classified into several groups through literature survey. Then, in the point of view of the inclusive design concept, inconvenience matters of passengers about the cabins, swimming pools, and exterior were also extracted from literature survey. Next, basis designs for them were selected among the classified groups in order to solve such inconvenience matters. Finally, the convenience-oriented design of the Emerald Princess Cruise considering the inclusive design concept was performed by applying the basis designs. As a result, we can see that the inclusive design concept can be applied to cruise ship design.
