The antioxidant activity of the extract of Erigeron annuus was assessed by means of two different in vitro tests: bleaching of the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH test) and the scavenging of authentic peroxynitrite in company with peroxynitrite generation from 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1). In both tests, the 85% aq. MeOH and n-BuOH soluble fractions of the crude extract showed a significant scavenging effect on peroxynitrite and DPPH radical in comparison to L-ascorbic acid. And bioassay-guided fractionation of the n-BuOH soluble fraction led to the isolation of three compounds: Apigenin (1), quercetin-3-O-glucoside (2), and caffeic acid (3). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic data and their antioxidant activities were measured by determining their capacity to scavenge peroxynitrite and the DPPH radical.
Hovenia dulcis Thunb fruits were successively extracted with hot water, water, methanol, ethyl acetate, and chloroform. The crude extracts were investigated for potential antioxidant by measuring scavenging against DPPH free radicals, reducing power, superoxide radicals, and protection of protein damage and cultured cells from a lethal dose of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$). In all chemical assays used, the hot water extract of H. dulcis fruits, which contained $61.14{\pm}2.57$ (Tannic acid mg/g extract, n=3) of total phenolic compounds contents exhibited highest activity in in vitro models of DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, superoxide radical scavenging activity and protection of protein damage. In addition, the hot water extract protected cultured RAW 264.7 macrophages from a lethal dose of $H_2O_2$ and reduced reactive oxygen species level in RAW 264.7 cells.
Red ginseng was extracted with water and analyzed for yield, saponin, pectin and other chemical composition. It was found that: (1) The total solid content in extract after 6 times of extraction was 46.8%,: including 13.6% of centrifugal residue; (2) 83.7% of total extractable solids and 86% total saponin was extracted after the initial three runs of extraction. (3) No significant changes were observed in HPLC pattern of extracted saponins over a range of extractions; (4) The ratio of centrifugal residue to total solids increased as the number of extractions increased; (5) The ratios of fat, protein, reducing sugar and pectin contents decreased with repeating extraction while those of crude fiber, total sugar and 35% alcohol insoluble residue increased when they were compared with total solids.
Attempts were made to investigate the pharmacological actions of Euonymus japonicae Cortex which is used as a substitute of Eucommiae Cortex. Practically the influence of the alcohol extract of the bark on the blood pressure response of rabbit, was examined, and the results are as follows. 1) The intravenous injections of the alcohol extracts of the bark decreased the blood pressure of rabbits to 4.6 11.1 and 34.2 mmHg respectively. 2) The intravenous injection of 10 mg/kg of the alcohol extract after intravenous injection of atropine 4 mg/kg or that of propranolol 2 mg/kg did not give any notable change to the blood pressure. 3) The intravenous injection of 10 mg/kg of the alcohol extract slightly decreased the raised blood pressure caused by the administration of acetylcholine $10^{-8}g/kg\;and\;10^{-7}g/kg$.
In the present study, acetone extract and sub-fractions of Albizia amara stem bark were evaluated for their free radical potential. The results showed that the crude extract and all the fractions exhibited antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities under different in vitro assays. Among the different fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited higher DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities than the standard quercetin. A. amara stem bark might be valuable source of natural antioxidants that could be used for medicinal and food applications.

Methanol extract of roots of Amblytropis pauciflora Kitagawa showed the antimicrobial activity to three test strains. Antimicrobial spectra of various extracts of Amblytropis pauciflora Kitagawa were tested against 24 strains of bacteria and fungi. The crude methanol extract inhibited the growth of 12 strains of bacteria and Asp. fumigatus with the exception of yeasts. The properties of the antimicrobial substance were very stable under heat(at 12$0^{\circ}C$), acid(pH 3.0) and alkali(pH 11.0) treatment. Only the root harvested in spring showed the antimicrobial activity. Among the components extracted by butanol, ginseng saponin Rg1 and various saponin-like materials were detected by TLC analysis using a plate of silica gel 60F254. The antimicrobial compound was purified by methanol extraction, activated charcoal column chromatography, Sep-pak(C18) pretreatment and reverse phase HPLC. The purified compound was detected at 13.520 min as a single peak(about 98% purity) through the HPLC analysis.
Phytoestrogenic S-equol production in human gut exclusively depends on the biotransformation of daidzein to dihydrodaidzein (DHD). With a growing demand for the DHD enriched biomaterials, the commercial soybean hypocotyl extract (SHE) was chosen as a substrate for the microbial DHD production by human gut bacterium MRG-1, anaerobic DHD producer. To optimize the production of DHD, anaerobic fermentation conditions, including sterilization time, growth stage of inoculum, and growth media, were investigated. Maximum DHD production (1.2 g/L) was achieved after 48 h incubation when 1% (w/v) of SHE in the 20-min-sterilized Gifu Anaeboic Medium media was inoculated with OD600 0.3-0.4 of MRG-1. This is the first report that crude soy biomaterial, instead of pure compounds, such as daidzin and daidzein, is utilized for the production of the DHD enriched biomaterial.
The present communication attempts to evaluate the physicochemical and preliminary phytochemical studies on the fruit of Terminalia chebula Retz. Combretaceae family. Haritaki is one of the most celebrated herbs in the Indian traditional medicine system, Ayurveda. Terminalia chebula is known to exhibit different properties like anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-protozoal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepato and renal protective activities, and in the management of metabolic syndrome. As there is no detailed standardisation work reported on fruit, the physicochemical parameters, preliminary phytochemical constants, heavy metals, analysis are carried out. The phytochemical screening indicated the presence Tannin, Alkaloid, Phenol, Carbohydrate, Steroids, Protein and Resin compounds in CO2 extract of Haritaki. The present investigation will helpful in assessing the quality and purity of a crude drug. Thus, the study provides facts that CO2 extract of Haritaki contains medicinally important bioactive phytochemical compounds which justifies the use of plant species as conventional medicine for treatment of many diseases.
In order to find a novel antioxidant source from nature, the comparison of antioxidative activity was carried out through the CDM(conductometric determination method) with various crude drugs on palm oil, lard and soybean oil. After the preliminary experiment, we concluded that the turmeric (Curcumae Rhizoma) ethanol extract has the strongest antioxidative activity among the ten crude drugs. In case of over 0.05% of concentration turmeric ethanol extract, it has more activity than others athough the turmeric ethanol extract has similar antioxidative activity to tocopherol and rosemary extract up to 0.05% of concentration. The turmeric ethanol extract of 0.01% was more effective in lard (AI=4.59) than in palm oil (AI=1.57) and ineffective in soybean oil. When turmeric ethanol extract was added to various kind of fatty acid methyl esters at 0.05% and 0.1% respectively, the antioxidative index(AI) on oleic acid methyl ester was greatly increased, whereas the antioxidative index on linoleic acid methyl ester was decreased.

Preparation of ginseng concentrate with high content of acidic polysaccharide from white tail ginseng marc that was obtained after preparation of white tail ginseng extract. As a result of extraction of white tail ginseng under various concentrations of ethanol (0∼90%), both amount of acidic polysaccharide and extraction yield decreased by increasing the ethanol concentration. However, acidic polysaccharide extracted by water from white tail ginseng marc was increased in accordance with the increase of ethanol concentration. The optimal condition for the extraction of acidic polysaccharide from the marc was treatment of $\alpha$-amylase in 390∼650 unit/g residue/15 mL of distilled water for 5 min at 4$0^{\circ}C$. The amount of acidic polysaccharide in water extract of the marc was increased from 8.3% to 10.5% by the treatment of $\alpha$-amylase. A new ginseng extract mixture was manufactured by mixing 50% ethanol extract of white tail ginseng and water extract of alcoholic residue in the ratio of 8:2 (w/w). Crude saponin content and acidic polysaccharide content were 10.5% and 17%, respectively. The mixture had a same crude saponin content and twice acidic polysaccharide content comparing to 50% ethanol extract of white tail ginseng. It suggests that preparation of new ginseng concentrate with high content of acidic polysaccharide from white tail ginseng marc has high potencies in the utilization of waste material.
