  • A 40-year-old male developed the swelling of the right leg one month after trauma on cycling. Conservative measures to relieve the swelling of the right leg for three months were failed. Venogram showed complete obstruction of the right common iliac vein. Crossover bypass [Palmas operation] with great saphenous vein graft for relief of venous stasis of the right leg was performed. Postoperatively, the swelling of the right leg was subsided and able to walk without edema of the right leg.

  • Several statistical procedures for assessment of bioequivalence of variabilities between two drug formulations in bioequivalence trials are reviewed and modified methods for assessing total variability are suggested. The problem of the current US FDA aggregate criterion for population bioequivalence and the necessity of disaggregate criterion are discussed with an illustrated example.

  • In the Internet Engineering Task Force(IETF), Next Step in Signaling(NSIS) working group, proposed a mechanism to discover the Crossover Node(CRN), when the route is changed by Mobile Node(MN) handover. The CRN is divergence or convergence node on old and new path for reserving resources. Trough the CRN discovery mechanism, it possible to reduce a signaling delay and avoid the redundant reservation on the common path between old and new path. However, the QoS(Quality of Service) can be guaranteed continuously while the MN is performing handover, it is needed to pre-reserve the resource on the new path before completion of the handover. When the nodes on the new path try to make a pre-resource reservation before the handover, it is difficult to pre-reserve the resource with the existing CRN discovery mechanism. Therefore, we proposed a Passive CRN(PCRN) discovery scheme and pre-resource reservation mechanism. The PCRN which means an initial common point between the current reserved and the new paths, where the handover can take place.

  • Relationship between the daily mortality and total suspended particulate(TSP) for the period of 1996-1997 was examined in Seoul, Korea. Generalized additive model was adapted for the analysis to allow the seasonality and long-term time effect in the air pollution and the nonlinear relationships with weather variables such as air temperature and relative humidity. An increase of 100 Ji9/m') TSP corresponds to 0.8-5.2 percent increase of the daily mortality Unidirectional (prospective and retrospective) case-crossover design results in large bias of the estimates. Bidirectional method gives relatively unbiased estimates but the standard errors are larger Case-crossover design should be used with caution in the situation where the data have seasonal trends like air pollution study.

  • Effect of temperature on membrane degradation in PEMFCs was studied. After cell operation at different temperatures($60{\sim}90^{\circ}C$) under accelerating degradation conditions(OCV, anode dry, cathode RH 65%) for 144 h, cell performance decreased from 12 to 35%. The results of FER in effluent water showed that this decrease in cell performance was caused by membrane degradation by the attack of $H_2O_2$ or oxygen radicals(${\cdot}OH$, $HO_2{\cdot}$) and that resulted in increase in gas crossover for radical formation. Radical formation on the electrode was confirmed by ESR. Activation energy of 66.2 kJ/mol was obtained by Arrhenius plot used to analyze the effect of temperature on membrane degradation. Increase of cell temperature enhanced gas crossover rate, radical formation rate and membrane degradation rate.

  • A Pt-layer was deposited on the anode side of a Nafion membrane via a sputtering method in order to reduce methanol crossover in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The methanol permeation and the proton conductivity through the modified membranes were investigated. The performances of the direct methanol fuel cell were also tested using single cells with a Nafion membrane and the modified membranes. The Pt-layers on the membrane blocked both methanol crossover and proton transport through the membranes. Methanol permeability and proton conductivity decreased with an increase of the platinum layer thickness. At methanol concentration of 2 M, the DMFC employing the modified membrane with a platinum layer of 66 nm-thickness showed similar performance to that of a DMFC with a bare Nafion membrane in spite of the lower proton conductivity of the former. The maximum power density of the cell using the modified membrane with a platinum layer of 66 nm-thickness increased slightly while that of the cell with the bare membrane decreased abruptly when a methanol solution of 6M was supplied.

  • Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD)-based hydrocarbon resins are widely used as tackifiers in many applications. In particular, hydrogenated DCPD-based hydrocarbon resins are widely used in premium hot-melt-type adhesives such as hot melt adhesives (HMAs) and/or hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesives (HMPSAs), because are water-white in color and possess excellent stability to light and heat. This article discusses the adhesive performance of various hydrogenated DCPD resins when they are used as tackifiers in styrene-block-copolymer (SBC)-based HMPSAs. This article shows the correlation between the characteristics of tackifiers and the adhesive performance of SBC-based HMPSAs. The higher the softening point of the tackifier, the higher is the $T_g$, softening point, and crossover temperature of the PSAs. High aromatic H wt% content reduces the high-temperature resistance of PSAs, as suggested by the decrease in the crossover temperature and softening point of the PSAs.

  • This paper presents an image contrast enhancement technique for improving the low contrast images using the improved IAFC(Integrated Adaptive Fuzzy Clustering) model. The low pictorial information of a low contrast image is due to the vagueness or fuzziness of the multivalued levels of brightness rather than randomness. Fuzzy image processing has three main stages, namely, image fuzzification, modification of membership values, and image defuzzification. Using a new model of automatic crossover point selection, optimal crossover point is selected automatically. The problem of crossover point selection can be considered as the two-category classification problem. The improved IAFC model is used to classify the image into two classes. The proposed method is applied to several experimental images with 256 gray levels and the results are compared with those of the histogram equalization technique. We utilized the index of fuzziness as a measure of image quality. The results show that the proposed method is better than the histogram equalization technique.

  • The membrane and electrode were degraded coincidentally at real PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells) operation condition. But the interaction membrane degradation between electrode degradation has not been studied. The effect of membrane degradation on electrode degradation was studied in this work. We compared electrode degradation after membrane degradation and electrode degradation without membrane degradation. I-V performance, hydrogen crossover current, impedance and TEM were measured after and before degradation of MEA. Membrane degradation enhanced hydrogen crossover, and then Pt particle growth rate was reduced. Increase of hydrogen crossover by membrane degradation reduced the electrode degradation rate.
