Biodegradable, pH-sensitive, glycol chitosan (GC) hydrogels were prepared using divinyl adipate (DVA) as a crosslinker and acetic acid as a catalyst. DVA has highly reactive double vinyl ester groups and GC contains a high density of hydroxyl groups, with two in every glucosamine unit. The transesterification reaction between vinyl esters and hydroxyl groups produced crosslinked GC hydrogels. The initial crosslinking reaction was monitored by measuring the viscosity of the reaction mixture. When DVA was added to the GC solution and heated to $50^{\circ}C$, the viscosity of the GC solution gradually increased, implying a crosslinking reaction and hydrogel formation. A new peak from the ester group was observed in the FTIR spectra of the GC hydrogels, confirming the crosslinking reaction. The synthesized GC hydrogel showed pH-dependent water absorbency, mainly due to the presence of amine groups ($-NH_2$) at the C-2 position of the glucosamine unit of GC. The water absorbency greatly increased at acidic pH and slightly decreased at alkaline pH. The GC hydrogel gradually degraded in $37^{\circ}C$ water due to hydrolysis of the ester bonds, which were intermolecular crosslinking sites. A red dye, 5-carboxyltetramethyl-rhodamine (CTMR), was entrapped in the GC hydrogels as a model compound. CTMR was released from GC hydrogels in two steps: an initial burst release mainly due to desorption and diffusion, and a second sustained release possibly due to gradual degradation.
In this study, 3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesulfonic acid (THS-PSA) was added to poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA_MA) to improve the separation characteristics toward water vapors in the air. The prepared membranes varying both PSSA_MA and THS-PSA amounts were also synthesized at different cross linking temperatures. Then, in order to investigate the separation characteristics of the resulting membranes, the dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) and vapor permeation experiments were carried out. The increase of cross-linking temperature showed longer time to reach the equilibrium sorption state from the dynamic vapor sorption experiments. PVA/PSSA_MA (3%)/THA-PSA(7%) prepared at $120^{\circ}C$ gave the highest permeability of 480 barrer at $35^{\circ}C$.
In this study, to improve the water flux of porous hydrophobic membranes, various water-soluble polymers including neutral, cationic and anionic polymers were adsorbed using 'salting-out' method. The adsorbed hydrophobic membrane surfaces were characterized mainly via the measurements of contact angles and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. To enhance the durability of the modified membranes, the water-soluble polymers such poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) and found to be resistant for more than 2 months in vigorously stirred water. The water flux was much more increased when the ionic polymers used as the coating materials rather than the neutral polymer and in this case, about 70% of $0.31L/m^2{\cdot}h$ (LMH) to 0.50 LMH was increased when 300 mg/L of polyacrylamide (PAAm) was used as the coating agents. Among the cationic coating polymers such as poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA_MA), poly(acrylic acid-comaleic acid) (PAM) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), PSSA_MA was found to be the best in terms of contact angle and water flux. In the case of PSSA_MA, the water flux was enhanced about 80%. The low concentration of the coating solution was better to hydrophilize while the high concentration inclined to block the pores on the membrane surfaces. The best coating condition was found: (1) coating concentration 150 to 300 mg/L, (2) ionic strength 0.15, (3) coating time 20 min.

A comb-like copolymer consisting of a poly(vinyl chloride) backbone and poly(hydroxy ethyl acrylate) side chains, i.e. PVC-g-PHEA, was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). This comb-like copolymer was crosslinked with 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid (IDA) via the esterification of the -OH groups of PHEA in the graft copolymer and the -COOH groups of IDA. Upon doping with phosphoric acid (PA, $H_3PO_4$) to form imidazole-PA complexes, the proton conductivity of the membranes continuously increased with increasing PA content. A maximum proton conductivity of 0.011 S/cm was achieved at $100^{\circ}C$ under anhydrous conditions. The PVC-g-PHEA/IDA/PA complex membranes exhibited good mechanical properties, i.e. 575 MPa of Young's modulus, as determined by a universal testing machine (UTM). Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the membranes were thermally stable up to $200^{\circ}C$.
This study illustrated the results of pervaporation separation using crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA-MA) for water-ethanol system at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$. The contents of the crosslinking agents were 7, 9, and ll wt% against PVA and the feed compositions of 50, 20, 10 and 4.4% in water were investigated. Typical trends of permeability and separation factor in pervaporation were observed for both the crosslinking agents and operating temperatures. For water : ethanol = 10 : 90, and at $45^{\circ}C$, PSSA-MA 11 wt% membrane showed the permeability $58.92g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factor 12003 respectively.

This study reports a synthesis of an amphiphilic linear block copolymer consisting of a hydrophobic poly (lactide) (PLA) block and a hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) block, PLA-b-hbPG. Simple chemical modification of the hbPG block with 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CA) led to a photo-crosslinkable block copolymer, PLA-b-hbPG-CA. Nanosized micelles of the block copolyemrs were used as drug carriers for sustainable release. The hbPG shell made of a small molecular weight hbPG block showed excellent hydrophilicity, which can minimize in vivo toxicity. The UV-crosslinked PLA-b-hbPG-CA micelles loaded with drugs colud be served as a drug delivery carrier for its biocompatibility and self-assembled structures.
Nylon 12 elastomer was slightly crosslinked in molten state by the addition of small amount of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a crosslink agent and triallycyanuate (TAC) as a co-agent during melt compounding at $160^{\circ}C$ in an internal mixer. The effect of the peroxide crosslinking on mechanical, dynamic mechanical and rheological properties of the nylon 12 elastomer was investigated by means of tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and small amplitude oscillating rheometer, respectively. With modification, there is an improvement in tensile modulus and Young's modulus with decease in elongation at break. DMA results for peroxide modified nylon 12 elastomers demonstrated that the glass transiaiton temperature of PTMG segment shifted to higher temperature and the storage modulus remained constant above the melting temperature of nylon 12 segments. Melt rheological studies revealed that the peroxide modified nylon 12 elastomer exhibited a more solid like behavior and stronger shear thinning behavior compared to neat nylon 12 elastomer, which was more prominent at higher TAC content in the polymer matrix. The peroxide modified nylon 12 elastomer exhibited good elastic recoverability and improved mechanical properties without sacrificing melt processibilty, and especially the service temperature range increased as compared to neat nylon 12 elastomer.
The hyaluronic acid (HA) with excellent biocompatibility can be combined with lactide, the ester dimer of polylactide, with good biodegradability to produce biocompatible materials applicable to drug delivery system. By freeze drying method, HA and lactide were crosslinked with crosslinking agent, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide. Degree of lactide and EDC reaction was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The degree of lactide and EDC reaction increased and swelling ratio decreased as the mole ratio of lactide to HA or crosslinking agent concentration increased or reaction temperature decreased. The drug release experiment result from membranes having different degree of lactide reaction showed that drug release rate reduced in proportion to the degree of lactide reaction. The drug release experiment result from drugs having different hyrodphobicity showed that the more hydrophobic drug was released more slowly.
Transition metal PSSA ionomers containing Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III), Ru(III), and Rh(III) are investigated by IR, Far-IR, UV-Vis and DSC. Reliable IR Spectroscopic criteria are established for assessing the degree of ion-exchange of PSSA ionomers and the local structures around metal cations in them. In the hydrated transition metal PSSA ionomers, the ionic groups are solvated by water molecules and there is no significant interactions between sulfonate group and metal cations. The visible spectra indicated that metal cations are present as [M$(H_2O)_6$]$^{n+}$ with Oh symmetry. Their $T_g$ values increase as the extent of ionic site concentration increases, but there is no direct dependence of $T_g$ on the nature of metal cations or their oxidation states. Thus, the water content in PSSA ionomer is found to have dominant influence on $T_g$ of hydrated transition metal PSSA ionomers. Dehydration of the hydrated transition metal PSSA ionomers results in direct interaction between ionic groups and significant color changes of the ionomers due to the changes of the local structures around metal cations. On the base of spectral data, their local structures are discussed. In case of dehydrated 12.8 and 15.8 mol % transition metal PSSA ionomers, no glass transition is observed in 25-$250^{\circ}C$ region and this is believed to arise from the formation of highly crosslinked structures caused by direct coordination of sulfonate groups of metal cations. In the 6.9 mol % transition metal PSSA ionomers, the glass transition is always observed whether they are hydrated or dehydrated and this is though to be caused by the sufficient segmental mobility of the polymer backbone.
Chitosan, natural organic polymer, has been applied in water treatment as adsorbent due to non-toxic for human being. The amino group as functional group, can interacts with cation and anion at the same time. The prepared chitosan bead (HCB) was crosslinked to increase chemical stability (HCB-G) and both HCB and HCB-G were prepared to increase physical strength by drying referred to DCB and DCB-G, respectively. The adsorption effect for crosslinking and drying for four types of chitosan bead was tested using pseudo fist order (PFO), pseudo second order (PSO), and intraparticle diffusion model (ID). Regardless of PFO and PSO, the order of K, rate constant, is as followed: HCB > HCB-G > DCB > DCB-G for Cu(II) and phosphate. Drying leading to contraction of bead significantly reduced adsorption rate due to reduce the porosity of chitosan. In addition, crosslingking also negatively effect on adsorption rate. When compared with Cu(II) using hydrogel bead, phosphate showed higher value than Cu(II) for PFO and PSO. The application of ID showed that both hydrogel beads (HCB and HCB-G) obtained a very low R2 ranging to 0.37 to 0.81, while R2 can be obtained to over 0.9 for DCB and DCB-G, indicting ID is appropriate for low adsorption rate.
