  • Silicon (Si) has attracted considerable attention due to its high theoretical capacity compared to conventional graphite anode materials. However, Si-based anode materials suffer from rapid capacity loss due to mechanical failure caused by large volume change during cycling. To alleviate this phenomenon, crosslinked polymeric binders with strong interactions are highly desirable to ensure the electrode integrity. In this study, thermally crosslinked polyimide binders were used for Si-alloy anodes in Li-ion batteries. The crosslinked polyimide binder was found to have high adhesion strength, resulting in enhanced electrode integrity during cycling. Therefore, the Si-alloy anodes with crosslinked polyimide binder provide enhanced electrochemical performance, such as Coulombic efficiency, capacity retention, and cycle stability.

  • In order to obtain crosslinked poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) foams with a closed-cell structure, a commercial-grade PBS was first modified in the melt using two different branching agents to increase the melt viscosity. The rheological properties of the branched and crosslinked PBS were examined by varying the amount of the branching agents. The complex viscosity of the crosslinked PBS increased with increasing amount of the branching agent. However, it decreased with increasing frequency. When 2 phr of the branching agent was added to PBS, the storage modulus (G') was higher than the loss modulus (G") throughout the entire frequency range, showing that the addition of a branching agent increases the melt viscosity and elasticity of PBS effectively. Closed-cell PBS foams were prepared by mixing the chemical blowing agent with the crosslinked PBS. The effect of the foaming conditions such as temperature and time, and the amount of the crosslinking agent on the structure of the expanded PBS foams were also investigated.

  • The photoisomerization of the crosslinked and uncrosslinked polymer-pair with azo linkages was studied by the photoinduced birefringence. The amount of photoinduced birefringence of crosslinked polymer system was much smaller than that of uncrosslinked polymer system, even when varying pumping laser power, so the photoisomerization of an azo chromophores could be controlled by crosslinking process. • Rheological and electrical properties of polystyrene (PS)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites via coagulated precipitation were investigated. Chemical modification and surfactant wrapping of CNT to improve the dispersion of CNTs may reduce the intrinsic properties of pristine CNT. To avoid this problem, PS and CNTs were dissolved and dispersed in dimethylformamide and then PS/CNT nanocomposites were prepared by the coagulated precipitation of CNT-dispersed PS solution in water. The coagulated precipitation method was highly effective enhancing the electrical conductivity of nanocomposites. Furthermore, the effect of adding poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) crosslinked particles to PS matrix on the rheological and electrical properties was investigated. With the addition of the crosslinked particles, the electrical percolation threshold of CNT reduced to 0.25 wt% and electrical conductivity increased further. It is speculated that CNTs in the volume occupied by crosslinked particles helped electrical pathway formation.

  • The characteristics of crosslinking and physical properties in partially crosslinked waste high density polyethylene (HDPE) were studied by introducing reactive melt processing with perbutyl peroxide (PBP). It was found that impurities in waste HDPE affected the crosslinking kinetics. Decrease in density and heat of fusion were observed in partially crosslinked HDPE while its melt viscosity increased. It was explained that impurities in waste HDPE enhanced the crosslinking compared to pure HDPE As a result, dramatic mechanical property improvement was achieved in the waste HDPE by crosslinking reaction.

  • To explore the potential of shell crosslinked micelle (SCM) as a drug carrier, the drug release behavior of poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PCL-b-PAA) SCMs was investigated. PCL-b-PAA was synthesized by ring opening polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone and atom transfer radical polymerization of tert-butyl acrylate, followed by selective hydrolysis of tert-butyl ester groups to acrylic acid groups. The resulting amphiphilic polymer was used to prepare SCMs by crosslinking of PAA corona via amidation chemistry. The drug release behavior of the SCMs was studied, using pyrene as a model drug, and was compared with that of non-crosslinked micelles, especially below the critical micelle concentration (CMC). When the shell layers were crosslinked, the drug release behavior of the SCMs was successfully modulated at a controlled rate compared with that of the non-crosslinked micelles, which showed a burst release of drug within a short time.

  • The ion-exchange membrane, Nafion, remains as the benchmark for a majority of research and development in IPMC technology. In this research, we employed a novel ionomer named by sulfonated poly(styrene-ran-ethylene) (SPSE) that is crosslinked by UV irradiation. The sulfonic acid groups were stable during the UV irradiation crosslinking process. Water uptake, ion exchange capacity, and proton conductivity are characterized for both pure SPSE and crosslinked SPSE membrane. The bending responses of SPSE actuators under both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) excitations were investigated. The voltage-current behaviors of the actuators under AC excitations are also measured. Results showed the crosslinked SPSE actuators have better electromechanical performance than that of pure SPSE actuator with regard to tip displacement as a novel smart material.

  • Two poly(4-vinylpyridines) having different degree of crosslinking were prepared by radical copolymerization of 4-vinylpyridine with N, N'-tetramethylenebis-acrylamide as a crosslinker. The abilities of these crosslinked polymers to bind acid dyes (methyl orange, ethyl orange, and propyl orange) were investigated at various temperatures in ethylene glycol as the binding medium. From the equilibrium amounts, the first binding constants and thermodynamic parameters for the bindings were evaluated. The first binding constants and thermodynamic parameters were not varied with these dyes. This result indicates that there is no hydrophobic interaction between the crosslinked polymers and the dyes in ethylene glycol. However, the first binding constants showed bell-shaped curves againtst the binding temperatures. This result could be explained in terms of the crosslinked hole size with temperature variation.

  • IPN (Interpenetrating Polymer Network) is a mixture of two or more crosslinked polymers with physically interlocked network structures between the component polymers. IPN can be classified as an alloy of thermosets and has the characteristics of thermosets such as the thermal resistance and chemical resistance and also has the characteristics of polymer alloys with enhanced impact resistance and amphoteric properties. The physical interlocking during the synthesis restricts the phase separation of the component polymer with chemical pinning process, thus the control of morphology is possible through variations of the reaction temperature and pressure, catalyst concentration and crosslinking agent concentration. Finely dispersed domain structure can be obtained through IPN synthesis of polymer components with gross immiscibility. In membrane applications, particularly for the separation of liquid mixtures, crosslinked polymer component with specific affinity to the permeate is needed. With the presence of the permeant-inert polymer component, the mechanical strength and the selectivity of the membranes are enhanced by restricting the swelling of the transporting polymer component networks.

  • The crosslinked films retaining cholesteric liquid-crystalline order were prepared by casting the liquid crystalline solutions of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) in methanol with the two kinds of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides (succinyl chloride and suberoyl chloride). The temperature dependence on the cholesteric pitch of the crosslinked films and the swelling behavior of the films in both water and methanol were investigated. The films displayed fingerprint patterns charateristic of cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase, and their pitches, as well as HPC itself, increased with temperature. However, the pitch of all crosslinked samples was much greater than that of HPC at the same temperature and increased with increasing concentration and chain length of the crosslinker. The crosslinked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling in both solvents. The degree of anisotropy slightly depended on the solvent and crosslinker species, but hardly on the crosslinker concentration investigated.
