Carboxymethyl cellulose/poly(ethylene glycol) (CMC/PEG) hydrogels crosslinked with citric acid (CA) are synthesized to evaluate the effect of CMC molecular weight (Mw), PEG and CA concentration on the optical property, swelling rate (SR), degradation rate (DR), and cytotoxicity and cell proliferation of hydrogels. For crosslinked CMC/PEG hydrogels, the FT-IR peak intensity associated with hydroxyl groups decreases due to PEG intercalation (esterification crosslinking) between CMC chains in a similar manner as the concentration of CA crosslinker increases. Crosslinked CMC (Mw = 90,000)/PEG hydrogels with 10 % CA dissolve regardless of PEG content. However, the SR of the CMC (Mw = 250,000)/PEG hydrogels decrease from 4923 % to 168 % with increasing PEG and CA concentrations from 0 to 20 % and from 0 to 25 %, respectively. As the Mw of CMC increases, the DR of the hydrogel is greatly improved. CMC (Mw = 250,000)/PEG10 hydrogels with 10 % CA exhibit the optimum properties of high absorbing capacity (3,200 %) with moderate DR (54 %), stiffness (1.39 ± 0.19 GPa), and cell viability (94.8 ± 1.3 %). CA-crosslinked CMC/PEG hydrogels are highly suitable for wound dressing or personal care applications due to their non-toxicity, good cell proliferation, SR, and mechanical properties.
Covalent-crosslinked sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) copolymers were synthesized copolymerization technique and additionally crosslinked with divinylbenzene (DVB). To optimize the reaction condition, a concentration of crosslinking agent and a reaction time were varied in the ranges of $30{\sim}90\;v/v%$ and $30{\sim}720\;min$. The properties of the crosslinked membranes were investigated by SEM, TGA and the measurement of proton conductivity. It was found that the proton conductivity of crosslinked membranes decreased depending on a degree of crosslinking while water uptake and methanol permeability reduced.
Various crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridines) having different degrees of crosslinking were prepared by radical copolymerizations of 4-vinylpyridine with N, N'-2, 6-pyridinebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The abilities of these crosslinked polymers to bind methyl orange and butyl orange were investigated at various temperatures in a buffer solution of pH 7. The first binding constants were evaluated from the equilibrium binding amounts. The first binding constants against the temperatures showed bell-shaped curves. Also, the first binding constants against the degree of crosslinking showed bell-shaped curves. When the temperature and the degree of crosslinking of maximum binding in the curves of these binding systems were compared with those of previous systems containing crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridines) prepared by using N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide, N, N'-tetramethy-lenebisacryamide and divinylbenzene as crosslinkers, respectively, they were varied with the crosslinked poly(4-vinyl pyridines) containing different crosslinkers. These results were discussed in terms of the properties of the crosslinkers.
The purpose of this study is to improve the defects of chitosan crosslinked viscose rayon by ECH and to describe the change of hand of chitosan crosslinked viscose rayon fabrics. The chitosan crosslinked viscose rayon were manufactured by crosslinking process using ECH as crosslinking agent, 2 wt% aqueous acetic acid as a solvent of chitosan and ECH, and 20 wt% aqueous sodium hydroxide as crosslinking catalyst. Viscose rayon were first immersed in the pad bath of the mixed solution of chitosan and ECH, padded up to 100 wt% wet pick-up on weight of fiber(owf), precured on pin frames at $130^{\circ}C$ for 2 minutes, immersed in NaOH solution and finally wash and dry. Antimicrobial properties of the viscose rayon treated with chitosan were measured by the shake flask C.T.M. 0923 test method with staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 6538) as the microorganism. When the concentration of chitosan was increased chitosan crosslinked viscose rayon's LT, WT, B, 2HB and MIU were increased and G, 2HG, SMD, T and $T_m$ were decreased. On the other hand, WT, EM were decreased and RT was increased at $1{\times}10^{-2}M$ ECH. The optimum condition for crosslinking was that ECH concentration was between $1{\times}10^{-2}M\;and\;5{\times}10^{-2}M$. Antimicrobial effects of rayon fabric treated with chitosan was excellent.
Crosslinking of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) anion exchange membranes, which can be used for capacitive deionization (CDI), was investigated. PPO Anion exchange polymer was prepared through bromination and amination reaction steps and crosslinked with bisphenol A diglycidylether (BADGE), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA), and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The gelation time by crosslinking was short in the order of HMDA > m-PDA > BADGE. The anion exchange membranes crosslinked at room temperature over a certain amount of crosslinking agent did not dissolve in an aprotic solvent such as 1-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and the chemical durability of their membranes to organic solvent increased. The ion exchange capacity and water uptake of anion exchange membranes crosslinked with different crosslinker (BADGE) contents were measured and compared. The CDI performance of the crosslinked PPO anion exchange membrane immersed in the HMDA solution was almost the same as that of the non - crosslinked membrane except for the initial stage of the adsorption step.
The effects of oxidative degradation on the performance of crosslinked polyethylene pipes were analyzed by the investigation of tensile properties and chemical structure change of the pipes during oxidative degradation. Annealing at high temperatures or UV irradiation method was used to induce the oxidative degradation of the crosslinked polyethylene pipes and the effects of the die temperature on the oxidative degradation of the pipes were also investigated. The tensile properties and chemical structure change of the pipes were investigated by universal testing machine and FT-IR, respectively. With the progress of thermo-oxidative degradation the tensile strength of the pipes slowly decreased but the elongation at break rapidly decreased, and the chemical structure of the pipes also changed considerably because of the introduced oxygen molecules. These results would be useful in estimating the performance deterioration of the crosslinked polyethylene pipes due to the oxidative degradation during production and storage.
Rheological and electrical properties of polystyrene (PS)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites via coagulated precipitation were investigated. Chemical modification and surfactant wrapping of CNT to improve the dispersion of CNTs may reduce the intrinsic properties of pristine CNT. To avoid this problem, PS and CNTs were dissolved and dispersed in dimethylformamide and then PS/CNT nanocomposites were prepared by the coagulated precipitation of CNT-dispersed PS solution in water. The coagulated precipitation method was highly effective enhancing the electrical conductivity of nanocomposites. Furthermore, the effect of adding poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) crosslinked particles to PS matrix on the rheological and electrical properties was investigated. With the addition of the crosslinked particles, the electrical percolation threshold of CNT reduced to 0.25 wt% and electrical conductivity increased further. It is speculated that CNTs in the volume occupied by crosslinked particles helped electrical pathway formation.
Purpose: The role of hard-type crosslinked hyaluronic acid (HA) with particulate bone substitutes in bone regeneration for combined inlay-onlay grafts has not been fully investigated. We aimed to evaluate the effect of hard-type crosslinked HA used with bone substitute in terms of new bone formation and space maintenance. Methods: A 15-mm-diameter round defect was formed in the calvaria of 30 New Zealand White rabbits. All animals were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups: the control group (spontaneous healing without material, n=10), the biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) graft group (BCP, n=10), and the BCP graft with HA group (BCP/HA, n=10). The animals were evaluated 4 and 12 weeks after surgery. Half of the animals from each group were sacrificed at 4 and 12 weeks after surgery. Samples were evaluated using micro-computed tomography, histology, and histomorphometry. Results: The BCP group showed higher bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV) values than the control and BCP/HA groups at both 4 and 12 weeks. The BCP and BCP/HA groups showed higher bone surface/tissue volume (BS/TV) values than the control group at both 4 and 12 weeks. The BCP group showed higher BS/TV values than the control and BCP/HA groups at both 4 and 12 weeks. No statistically significant difference in newly formed bone was found among the 3 groups at 4 weeks. The BCP group showed significantly higher new bone formation than the BCP/HA group at 12 weeks. Conclusions: Hard-type crosslinked HA did not show a positive effect on new bone formation and space maintenance. The negative effect of hard-type crosslinked HA may be due to the physical properties of HA that impede osteogenic potential.
The core/shell type structure of the highly crosslinked poly(glycidylmetharylate-co-divinylbenzene) microspheres prepared in the precipitation polymerization in acetonitrile was thoroughly verified by means of swelling, $^1H$ NMR, XPS, TEM and TGA measurements. In the XPS measurement, the higher the GMA content, the higher the oxygen content was observed, implying that the higher content of GMA is observed in the particle surface. The further verification of the core/shell structure of the poly(GMA-co-DVB) particles was carried out using $^1H$ NMR and TEM techniques, resulting in the poly(GMA-co-DVB) particles with the GMA rich-phase and DVB rich-phase. In overall, the poly(GMA-co-DVB) microspheres consist of a highly crosslinked DVB rich-phase in the core and slightly or non-crosslinked GMA rich-phase in the shell part due to the different reaction ratios between two monomers and self-crosslinking density of DVB.
Chitin is known as biodegradable natural polymer. In spite of various application of chitin derivatives from waste marine sources, commercial use of chitin has been limited due to high resistance to chemicals and the absense of proper solvents. We chitin prepared through the decalcification, bleaching and deproteination from Protunus trituberculatus shells by change of Hackman's method. Also, Microcrystalline chitin made by hydrolysis that was reduce made of resistance solvents used by dilute hydrochloric acid, ultrasonic and hydrogen peroxide. Crosslinked chitin derivatives were preparaed from chitin with crosslink agents(epichlorohydrin, 1,3-dichloropropanol) follwed by crosslinkage at 6C position. The effects of these parameters on chitin dervatives were invastigated by IR, DSC, XRD, BET, PSA and SEM. SEM analysis showed that both chitin and crosslinked chitin had a particle shaped morphology.
