  • Silica which is used for reinforcing filler in tire industry is widely known as eco-friendly material exerting $CO_2$ reduction effect through decrease of rolling resistance and improvement of wet grip. Generally silica is classified as a highly polar filler because it contains a large number of silanol (Si-OH) group on its surface. And also silica gives a lower reinforcing effect than carbon black due to its poorer rubber-filler interaction. Therefore silica is treated with silane coupling agent or activator, then following the conventional rubber blend method, vulcanized sheets were prepared using a hot press, and cure characteristics, mechanical properties and abrasion resistance of the test specimens were investigated. It was found that with an increase in the silane coupling agent content the tensile strength, 300% modulus and abrasion resistance increased while Mooney viscosity decreased and crosslink density slightly increased with an increase of activator.

  • The microstructures of NATM were examined by SEM, FT-IR spectra, tensile properties, mole % of [NCO/OH], and particle size analyzer. Growing concerns in the environment-friendly industries have led to the development of solvent-free formulations that can be cured. We had synthesized NATM(New Austria Tunnel Method) resin having the ability to protect stainless steel against corrosion. Comparing with general NATM resin and coatings, this resin that synthesized with polyurethane and epoxy was highly stronger in intensity and longer durability. Hybrid resin was composed of polyols, MDI, epoxy, silicone surfactant, catalyst and crosslink agent, and fillers. Moreover, fillers such as fume silica not only accelerated the curing rate but also improved the physical property as thermal barriers. The rigid segments of synthetic resin in mechanical properties were due to fume silica and the increase the mole% of [NCO/OH] for corrosion protection. In conclusion, the hybrid resin microstructure with crosslink agent and fume silica are good material for thermosetting coating of metal substrates such as stainless steel.

  • It has been tried to decrease the crosslink density of vulcanized EPDM (ethylone-propylene-diene terpolymer) rubber through a chemical devulcanization treatment. Phase transfer catalyst, alkali metal (i.e., sodium), and triphenylphosphine have been used as a chemical agent ul the devulcanization treatment. Also it has been estimated the effect of the devulcanization treatment in the case of utilization of 2-butanol as a devulcanization reaction solvent. In the devulcanization treatment using quaternary ammonium salt as a phase transfer catalyst. the devulcanization effect has been studied with the variation of catalyst molecular weight and the choice of bromide or chloride cation. In the devulcanization treatment using sodium, it has been estimated the devulcanization treatment effect depending upon the variation of reaction variables such as amount of sodium used, reaction temperature, pressure of hydrogen gas, which is used as a reaction environment. The $M_c$ value (number average molecular weight between two crosslink points) has been experimentally estimated by the equilibrium swelling method and it is quantitatively related to the crosslink density. The estimation of devulcanization effect for vulcanized EPDM rubber has been carried out by the comparison of the $M_c$ values between the untreated and the treated specimens.

  • The mechanical and dynamic properties according to the content of filler, plasticizer, and crosslinking agent of rubber composites for Lipseal were measured in this study. The mechanical properties of the composite including the silane coupling agent and silica were found to be superior to those of the composite containing carbon black. It was found that the rebound resilience characteristics were influenced by the crosslink density of sulfur rather than the filler or plasticizer. In the case of recovery, it was confirmed that the elastic restoring force improved in the compression deformation condition and recovery increased as the crosslinking density increased. The rubber composite for Lipseal of this study is expected to improve the manufacturing technology of the rubber composite which can implement the optimum function for recognizing the performance such as oil resistance, durability and compression set.

  • The ion exchange resins were synthesized from 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous material) divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslinks of 1%, 6%, and 15% by substitution reaction. These synthetic resins were confirmed by chlorine content, elementary analysis, surface area, and IR-spectrum. The object of this study was to seperate the metal ion absorbed in reinforcement water fire extinguishing agent. As the results of the effects of pH, equilibrium arrival time, and crosslink of synthetic resin on metal ion adsorption for resin adsorbent, the metal ions were showed high adsorption at pH 3 or over and adsorption equilibrium of metal ions was about 2 hours. In addition, adsorption selectivity for the resin in water was the order of Al (III) > Ni (II) > Sm (III) ions, adsorbability of the metal ions was in the crosslinks order of 1%, 6%, and 15%.

  • Influence of a silane coupling agent on the reatraction behaviors of NR vulcanizates reinforced with carbon black and c lay was studied. Bis-(3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl )-tetrasulfide (TESPT) was used as a silane coupling agent. The vulcanizates containing the silane coupling agent were, on the whole, recovered faster than those without the silane coupling agent. However, for the vulcanizate with the higher clay content at low temperature region (below $-12^{\circ}C$), the vulcanizate containing the silane coupling agent was recovered slower than that without the silane coupling agent. The recovery difference of the vulcanizates with and without silane coupling agent decreased with increase of clay content. The experimental results were explained with crosslink density, modulus, and bound rubber content.

  • In this study, the EPDM powder which was surface activated by high temperature and shear pulverization process was prepared and the mechanical properties and odor material analysis were investigated. Analysis for particle size and size distribution of waste of the EPDM powder has been performed. The waste EPDMs used in this study were 4 types of solid, sponge, solid+sponge, and solid+metal. According to the results, the solid type showed the smallest particle size among the 4 types of EPDM powder. Effective surface devulcanization of EPDM powder could be obtained by the addition of the reclaiming agent. The dicumyl peroxide was considered as the best crosslink agent for dynamic vulcanization when the surface activated EPDM powder was blended with polyolefin in order to make TPE. Also, the optimum amounts of DCP was 6 phr in terms of surface crosslink reaction and mechanical properties of EPDM powder. The processes of water adsorption and rose oil addition were employed to remove the odor of EPDM powder caused by reclaiming agent. The GC/MS was used to analyze the odor compounds.

  • Water swelling behaviors of SBR vulcanizates with different reinforcing systems of carbon black, silica without a coupling agent, and silica containing a coupling agent were studied. Distilled water and 3.5% NaCl solution were used as swelling media. The water swelling ratios in the distilled water were higher than those in the salt solution. The water swelling ratios of the carbon black-filled samples were lower than those of the silica-filled ones. For the silica-filled SBR vulcanizates, the specimens without the silane coupling agent had higher water swelling ratios than those containing it. Water swelling behaviors of SBR composites with different 1,2-unit contents were also compared. The water swelling ratios tended to decrease by increasing the 1,2-unit content.

  • Physical properties of foams depend on the density of foams, Physical properties of base polymers, open ceil contents, and cell structures including the size, size distribution, shape of ceil and the thickness of membrane and strut. The density of foam is affected by raw materials, concentration oi crosslinking agent and blowing agent and process parameters such as processing technique and condition. Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer(EVA) foam is a crosslinked cellular material. The foaming characteristics and physical properties of EVA foam are affected by decomposition rate of blowing agent. In this study, the decomposition rate of blowing agent and crosslinking rate, foaming characteristics and physical properties of foams were evaluated. The slow decomposition rate of blowing agent results in low density foam, good shock absorption property and uniform cell size distribution compared to the high decomposition rate of blowing agent.
