Control of the mechanical behavior of composite materials and structures under monotonic and dynamic loads for cracks and damage is a vast and complex area of research. The modeling of the different physical phenomena and behavior characteristics of a composite material during deformation play an important role in the structural design. Our study aims to analyze numerically the energy release rate parameter G of a composite laminated plate (glass or boron / epoxy) cross-ply [$+{\alpha}$, $-{\alpha}$] in the presence of a crack between two circular notches under the effect of several parameters such as fiber orientation ${\alpha}$, the crack orientation ${\beta}$, the orientation ${\gamma}$ of the two considered circular notches and the effect of mechanical properties. Our results show clearly that both notches orientation has more effect on G than the cracks and fibers orientations.
In this study, the bending analysis of composite laminates using the classical laminated theory is investigated. A piece-wise linear incremental approach is employed to describe the nonlinear mechanical behavior of the composite laminates, and a 2D strain-based interactive failure theory is employed to predict the ultimate flexural loads. The 3-point bending tests are performed for cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates. The analysis results with the failure theory are verified by comparing the analysis findings to the experimental outcome.

Externally bonding fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets with an epoxy resin is an effective technique for strengthening and repairing reinforced concrete (RC) beams under flexural loads. Their resistance to electro-chemical corrosion, high strength-to-weight ratio, larger creep strain, fatigue resistance, and nonmagnetic and nonmetallic properties make carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites a viable alternative to bonding of steel plates in repair and rehabilitation of RC structures. The objective of this investigation is to study the effectiveness of CFRP sheets on ductility and flexural strength of reinforced high strength concrete (HSC) beams. This objective is achieved by conducting the following tasks: (1) flexural four-point testing of reinforced HSC beams strengthened with different amounts of cross-ply of CFRP sheets with different amount of tensile reinforcement up to failure; (2) calculating the effect of different layouts of CFRP sheets on the flexural strength; (3) Evaluating the failure modes; (4) developing an analytical procedure based on compatibility of deformations and equilibrium of forces to calculate the flexural strength of reinforced HSC beams strengthened with CFRP composites; and (5) comparing the analytical calculations with experimental results.
Knowledge of thin films mechanical properties is strongly associated to the reliability and the performances of Nano Electro Mechanical Systems (NEMS). In the literature, there are several methods for micro materials characterization. Bulge test is an established nondestructive technique for studying the mechanical properties of thin films. This study improve the performances of NEMS by investigating the mechanical behavior of Nano rectangular thin film (NRTF) made of new material embedded in Nano Electro Mechanical Systems (NEMS) by developing the bulge test technique. The NRTF built from adhesively-bonded layers of basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) laminate composite materials in Nano size at room temperature and were used for plane-strain bulging. The NRTF is first pre-stressed to ensure that is no initial deflection before applied the loads on NRTF and then clamped between two plates. A differential pressure is applying to a deformation of the laminated composite NRTF. This makes the plane-strain bulge test idea for studying the mechanical behavior of laminated composite NRTF in both the elastic and plastic regimes. An exact solution of governing equations for symmetric cross-ply BFRP laminated composite NRTF was established with taking in-to account the effect of the residual strength from pre-stressed loading. The stress-strain relationship of the BFRP laminated composite NRTF was determined by hydraulic bulging test. The NRTF thickness gradation in different points of hemisphere formed in bulge test was analysed.

In the first part of this study, a numerical simulation model was developed using the mechanical APDL software to validate the results of the 3D-elastisity theory on the laminated sandwich plate developed by Panago. The numerical simulation model showed a good agreement to the results of Pagano's theory in terms of deflection, normal stresses, and shear stresses. In the second part of this study, the developed numerical simulation model was used to define different plates dimensions and fibers layup orientations to examine the load response in terms of deflection and stresses. Further analysis was implemented on the natural frequencies of laminated xxx plates of the plates. The layup configurations include Unidirectional (UD), Cross-Ply (CP), Quasi-Isotropic (QI), the linear bio-inspired known as Linear-Helicoidal (LH), and the nonlinear bio-inspired known as Fibonacci-Helicoidal (FH). The following numerical simulation model can be used for the design and study of novel, sophisticated bio-inspired composite structures in a variety of configurations subjected to sinusoidal or constant loads.

Even though the longitudinally stiffened laminated composite plates with closed section ribs should be an effective system for axially compressed members, the existing researches on the applications of closed-section ribs, especially for the laminated composite plates, are not sufficient. This study is aimed to examine the influence of the sectional stiffness of U-shaped ribs on the buckling modes and strengths of laminated composite plates. Applying the orthotropic plates with eight layers of the layup $[(0^{\circ})_4]_s$ and $[(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ})_2]_s$, 3-dimensional finite element models for the U-rib stiffened plates were setup by using ABAQUS and then a series of eigenvalue analyses were conducted. From the parametric studies, the minimum required ply thicknesses as well as the buckling strengths were presented for the analysis models. The buckling strengths were compared with the theoretical critical stress equation for simply supported plates based on the Classical laminated plate theory. This study will contribute to the future study for evaluating the minimum required stiffness and optimum design of U-rib stiffened plates.
The present study describes a method for analytical solution to elastic field in structural elements of general symmetric laminated composite materials. The two dimensional plane stress elasticity problems under mixed boundary conditions are reduced to the solution of a single fourth order partial differential equation, expressed in terms of a single unknown function, called displacement potential function. In addition, all the components of stress and displacement are expressed in terms of the same displacement potential function, which makes the method suitable for any boundary conditions. The method is applied to obtain analytical solutions to two particular problems of structural elements consisting of an angle-ply laminate and a cross-ply laminate, respectively. Some numerical results are presented for both the problems with reference to the glass/epoxy composite. The results are highly accurate and reliable as all the boundary conditions including those in the critical regions of supports and loads are satisfied exactly. This verifies the method as a simple and reliable one as well as capable to obtain exact analytical solution to elastic field in structural elements of composite materials under mixed and any other boundary conditions.

Foward-swept wings are known to possess superior aerodynamic performance compared to the conventional straight wings. However major concerns regarding forward-swept wings include divergence at lower airspeeds which require careful consideration at the design stage. As an endeavor to overcome such drawbacks, aeroelastic tailoring is attempted. In order to find an optimal ply sequence, recursive aeroelastic analyses is conducted and one-dimensional beam analysis coupled with simple aerodynamics is used for the improved computational efficiency and modelling convenience. The analysis used in this paper, DYMORE and analytic formula, both use one-dimensional beam model for the structure. Cross-sectional analysis for multi-cell NACA0015 airfoil section is conducted using VABS and oblique function is used for the sweep angle. Throughout the present aeroelastic tailoring, the maximum divergence speed of 290.2m/s is achieved which is increased by approximately 43% than that for the conventional ply configuration.
The purposes of this study were, first, to investigate retention levels of toxic elements and oxide individual plies for each panel and, second, to examine disproportioning of individual toxic elements Thirty five water gum plywood panels were treated with a copper-chromium-arsenic preservative (CCA) by the soaking process as the treament time were applied. Such individual plies at a distance of 2.5cm, 7.5cm from the edge were assayed for CuO, $CrO_3$, and $As_2O_5$ on the basis of copper, chromium and arsenic content by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. In these experiments, 12mm thickness plywood panels made of water gum, which were selling, were selected for the preservative treatment. Treating solutions were prepared for 10%, dilute solution of copper-chromium-arsenic preservative and then 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours soaking trements in CCA preservative were applied. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The retention of total oxide in the face and back plies (1+7) retained more than the retention of total oxide in the other plies. The total oxide retention for the individual plies except the face and back plies (1+7) was showed in the following orders; cross plies (3+5), cross plies (2+6), core ply (4). 2. The retentions of total oxide increased as the increase of treatment time. The CCA treated plywood retained high levels of total oxide retention in the face and back plies (1+7). 3. All the retentions in the face and back plies (1+7) is over 5Kg/$m^3$, New Zealand Timber Preservation Standards Specification, and after 6 hours, the retentions in the cross plies (3+5) is over 4. The relative penetration of copper, chromium, and arsenic were not affected by the treatment time. The proportion of arsenic decreased in relation to both copper and chromium and the proportion of copper increased in relation to both chromium and arsenic. 5. A disproportioning of copper, chromium occurred with longer distance from edge, and with longer distance from edge the leachability resistance of CCA treated specimens decreased. After 6 hours (soaking time), the proportion of active elements at a distance of 2.5cm from the edge was consistent. And after 24 hours-soaking, the proportion of active elements at a distance of 7.5cm from the edge was consistent.

This paper presents optimization of the main spar of Human-Powered Aircraft (HPA) wing. Mass minimization was attempted, while considering large torsional deformation of the beam. Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) method was adopted as a relevant tool to conduct structural optimization algorithm. An inner diameter and ply thicknesses of the main spar were selected as the design variables. The objective function includes factors such as mass minimization, constant tip bending displacement, and constant tip twist of the beam. For estimation of bending and torsional deformation, the geometrically exact beam model, which is appropriate for large deflection, was adopted. Properties of the cross sectional area which the geometrically exact beam model requires were obtained by Variational Asymptotic Beam Sectional Analysis (VABS), which is a cross sectional analysis program. As a result, maintaining tip bending displacement and tip twist within 1.45%, optimal design that accomplished 7.88% of the mass reduction was acquired. By the stress and strain recovery, structural integrity of the optimal design and validity of the present optimization procedure were authenticated.
