  • Given increasing concerns regarding environmental issues, environmentally responsible behavior during the construction of cross-sea bridge projects becomes critical. However, a systematic investigation of the topic remains absent. To bridge the knowledge gap, this study first defines environmentally responsible behavior from four perspectives: purposes, means, contents and influencing factors. Then, the study uses a grounded theory approach to code and analyze 101 documentations retrieved from 30 cross-sea bridge projects carried out by Chinese construction companies worldwide. Results show that environmentally responsible behaviors in cross-sea bridge projects are highly influenced by four factors, namely government policies, public opinions, goals of the projects, and construction companies'philosophy of environmental protection. Results also indicate that Chinese construction companies have used managerial, technical, and ecological means to ensure that the goals of environmentally responsible behaviors, namely minimization of damage to marine ecology; prevention of air, noise and visual pollution; and reduction of resource consumptions, are achieved. Lastly, suggestions for promoting and governing environmentally responsible behavior are proposed.

  • A new cell-cross bridge mechanics model is proposed to analyze the mechanics of heart muscle. Electrophysiology of a cardiac cell is numerically approximated using the previous model of human ventricular myocyte. Ion transports across cell membrane initiated by action potential induce excitation-contraction mechanism in the cell via cross bridge dynamics. Negroni and Lascano model (NL model) is employed to compute the tension of cross bridge closely related to ion dynamics in cytoplasm.

  • The presence of traffic on a slender long-span bridge deck will modify the cross-section profile of the bridge, which may influence the flutter derivatives and in turn, the critical flutter wind velocity of the bridge. Studies on the influence of vehicles on the flutter derivatives and the critical flutter wind velocity of bridges are rather rare as compared to the investigations on the coupled buffeting vibration of the wind-vehicle-bridge system. A typical streamlined cross-section for long-span bridges is adopted for both experimental and analytical studies. The scaled bridge section model with vehicle models distributed on the bridge deck considering different traffic flow scenarios has been tested in the wind tunnel. The flutter derivatives of the modified bridge cross section have been identified using forced vibration method and the results suggest that the influence of vehicles on the flutter derivatives of the typical streamlined cross-section cannot be ignored. Based on the identified flutter derivatives, the influence of vehicles on the flutter stability of the bridge is investigated. The results show that the effect of vehicles on the flutter wind velocity is obvious.

  • A post-tensioned steel plate girder bridge with cross-beams is analyzed by specially orthotropic laminate theory. The cross-sections of both girders and cross-beams are WF types. The result is compared with that of the beam theory. This bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical load, and axial loads and moment due to post-tension. In this paper, finite difference method for numerical analysis of simple supported bridge is developed. Relatively exact solution is obtained even with small number of meshes. Theory and analysis method of specially orthotropic laminate plates used in this paper can be used in design of new bridges, and maintenance and repair of old bridges.

  • It is on increasing trend to employ H-rolled beams as main flexural members of bridges and of temporary structures owing to their handiness for construction, maintenance, and management. But in the case of applying H-rolled beams to bridges, maximum length of bridge span is around 20m. Therefore, to develop simplified steel-concrete composite bridge having long span using H-rolled beam needs new cross girder system at internal supports, optimization of bridge system without cross beams between supports and steel-concrete composite bridge deck. This study performs mechanical analysis of cross girder system for H-rolled beam steel-concrete composite bridge with long span and verifies its usefulness.

  • Aiming at the wind-resistant design of a sea-crossing arch bridge, the static aerodynamic coefficients of its girder (composed of stretches of π-shaped cross-section and box cross-section) were studied by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation and wind tunnel test. Based on the comparison between numerical simulation, wind tunnel test and specification recommendation, a combined calculation method for the horizontal force coefficient of intermediate and small span bridges is proposed. The results show that the two-dimensional CFD numerical simulations of the individual cross sections are sufficient to meet the accuracy requirements of engineering practice.

  • Cross-beam in the existing temporary bridge system is usually installed to prevent the lateral-torsional buckling of girders and to promote the construction efficiency. However, most of this cross-beams are connected to the girder web by bolts, and therefore, gravitational load resisting capacity of the cross-beams are negligibly small. In recent years, new temporary bridge system, in which the cross-beams and girders are connected to resist the external loads as a unit, was developed. In this paper, we present the experimental and analytical study results pertaining to the structural behavior and load carrying capacity of new temporary bridge system. From the results of study, it was found that the continuous cross-beam increased the flexural rigidity and reduced the maximum flexural stress in the girder. In addition, it was also found that the new temporary bridge system developed is more appropriate for the application in the long-span temporary bridge.

  • This study was conducted for the torsional behavior of catwalk system which is a temporary structure on a suspension bridge. The torsional deformation of the catwalk structure has a significant effect on the workability and safety of workers during main cable erection. For this reason, the torsional deformation of catwalk is controlled to be acceptable levels below by adjusting the cross bridge interval in design stage. This study analyzed the effect of separation between cross bridge associated with twist safety of catwalk system. For the analytical approach, a detailed analysis model was created including cross bridge. Both wind load within the wind velocity range that allows the construction and eccentric load of Prefabricated Parallel Wire Strand were analyzed by analysis model. Result of study shows that separation between cross bridges has a significant effect on the torsional behavior of the catwalk.

  • A three-dimensional finite element dynamic analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of reducing cross beams from a simply supported straight P.S.C girder bridge. Two analyses were performed on the P.S.C girder bridge; one with 7 cross beams which is commonly used as current standard, and the other with 3 cross beams. A frequency analysis was conducted first in order to establish the dynamic characteristics of the bridge and determine an appropriate time step to use in the time history analyses. To assess the function and effectiveness of the cross beams, time history analysis was conducted for aforementioned two analysis cases. In the analysis, the complete model was subjected to a loading condition corresponding to the one passing truck loading. Several results of deflection, bending moment and shear forces were compared for two cases. From the analysis results, reduction of cross beams was found to have only a minimum effect on the response of the bridge. The maximum deck slab bending moment was found to decrease. This decrease should result in smaller flexural crack widths in the deck slab, which may lead to an improved deck performance.

  • Recently new construction and reconstruction of the bridge have been required to minimize traffic congestion, environmental disadvantage, to reduce the period of construction, and to improve the quality and workability during the construction. For this reason, the application of modular bridge system, which is assembly of the structural members, is necessary to prepare for near future. Fall of girders can occur at the moment to connect between precast girders during the construction, so appropriate cross beams should be installed to solve the mentioned problem. In this study, understanding the structural characteristics and domestic and international case of cross beam, alternative cross beam system for modular bridge was developed. To inspect the structural characteristics of the alternative system, specimens were built and static loading test was performed. Afterward, the behavior of cross beam interms of joints and load distribution was observed. Experimental results were analyzed and compared with each data. Therefore, the appropriate cross beam system for modular bridge will be chosen and proposed in this paper.
