  • Carbon fiber has excellent specific strength, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. And p-Aramid fiber has high toughness and heat resistance and high elasticity, and is used in various fields such as industrial protective materials, bulletproof helmets and vests, as well as industrial fields. However, carbon fiber is relatively expensive, and is susceptible to brittle fracture behavior due to its low fracture strain. On the other hand, the aramid fiber tends to decrease in elastic modulus and strength when applied to the epoxy matrix, but it is inexpensive and has higher elongation and fracture toughness than carbon fiber. Thus the twill hybrid carbonaramid fiber reinforced composite laminate composite was investigated for a delamination fracture toughness under Mode I loading by 2 kinds of MBT and MCC deduction. The specimen was fabricated with 20 hybrid fabric plies. The initial crack was made by inserting the teflon tape in the center plane with a0/W=0.5 length. The results show that SERR(Strain Energy Release Rate) as the critical and stable delamination fracture toughness were 0.09 kJ/㎡, 0.386 kJ/㎡ by MBT deduction, and 0.192 kJ/㎡, 0.67 kJ/㎡ by MCC deduction, respectively.

  • Short antimicrobial peptide, A4W, have been studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in an explicit dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelle. Peptide was aligned with DPC micelle and transferred new peptide-micelle coordinates within the same solvent box using specific micelle topology parameters. After initial energy minimization and equilibration, the conformation and orientation of the peptide were analyzed from trajectories obtained from the RMD (restrained molecular dynamics) or the subsequent free MD. Also, the information of solvation in the backbone and the side chain of the peptide, hydrogen bonding, and the properties of the dynamics were obtained. The results showed that the backbone residues of peptide are either solvated using water or in other case, they relate to hydrogen bonding. These properties could be a critical factor against the insertion mode of interaction. Most of the peptide-micelle interactions come from the hydrophobic interaction between the side chains of peptide and the structural interior of micelle system. The interaction of peptide-micelle, electrostatic potential and hydrogen bonding, between the terminal residues of peptide and the headgroups in micelle were observed. These interactions could be effect on the structure and flexibility of the peptide terminus.

  • Beam-column joints (BCJs) are recognized among the most crucial zones in reinforced concrete structures, as they are the critical elements subjected to a complex state of forces during a severe earthquake. Under such conditions, BCJs exhibit behaviors with impacts that extend to the whole structure and significantly influence its ductility and capability of dissipating energy. The focus of this paper is to investigate the effect of undamaged transverse beam (secondary beams) on the ductility of concrete BCJs reinforced with conventional steel and shape memory alloys bars using pushover analysis at tip of beam under different axial load levels at the column using a nonlinear finite element model in ABAQUS environment. A numerical model of a BCJ was constructed and the analysis outcomes were verified by comparing them to those obtained from previous experiments found in the literature. The comparison evidenced the capability of the calibrated model to predict the load capacity response of the joint. Results proved the ability of undamaged secondary beams to provide a noticeable improvement to the ductility of reinforced concrete joints, with a very negligible loss in load capacity. However, the effect of secondary beams can become less significant if the beams are damaged due to seismic effects. In addition, the axial load was found to significantly enhance the performance of BCJs, where the increase in axial load magnified the capacity of the joint. However, higher values of axial load resulted in greater initial stiffness of the BCJ.

  • It is important to understand thermal characteristic as a method to estimate the new materials, because spontaneous ignition characterized by causing combustion in the low temperature without ignition source. If can not find out the thermal characteristics of materials, it is frequent that causes of fires could not be found. The danger level of spontaneous ignition material should be estimated and by closely studying its thermal characteristic. However, RPF(Refuse Paper & Plastic Fuel) is a solid matter and getting increasesa year by year because it is an economy profit as alternative energy for limited fossil fuels. Some time RPF occur a fire in the cases of its production process and conservation. Therefore study for thermal stability and critical ignition temperature of RPF was so imperative that the experiment by means of Bombe Calorimeter, TG-DTA, MS80, SIT-II, and Wire Basket Test was implemented. As a result, RPF had a caloric value 26.4-28.3 MJ/kg, and its initial pyrolysis temperature was $192^{\circ}C$ at heating rate 2 K/min. With the result of analysis by MS 80 which is an instrument measuring microscopic calory, pure RPF not containing water has higher caloric value than RPF containing 20% water. Also, SIT-II which is an instrument of insulated auto-ignition was ignited by $118.5^{\circ}C$. This temperature is lower than that of Wire Basket Test. The critical ignition temperature was calculated by Frank-Kamenetskii equation can cause ignition at $80^{\circ}C$ when conserved in the height of 10 m by the standard of infinity slab.

  • In order to determine the moisture content level for safe storage of wild vegetables, drying characteristics and water vapor sorption characteristics of four vegetables, i.e., zucchini slice, sweet potato stem, taro stem, and platycodon, were investigated. The drying curves of these vegetables were consisted of three characteristic stages which were the initial settling down period, the constant drying rate period, and the falling drying rate period. And the falling rate period of the vegetables showed 2 or 3 parts of falling rate. All of the falling rate curves of the vegetables showed upwardly convex shape which is known as a characteristic pattern for the drying of fibrous food materials. The critical moisture contents of the vegetables were $8.29{\sim}9.75,\;10.40{\sim}15.08,\;9.51{\sim}14.52\;and\;3.29{\sim}3.56g\;H_2O/g$ dry solids for zucchini slice, sweet potato stem, taro stem, and platycodon, respectively. Activation energy values of drying rate during falling rate period were 2.30, 2.11, 4.97, and 2.80 kcal/mol for zucchini slice, sweet potato stem, taro stem, and platycodon respectively. The BET monolayer moisture contents of the vegetables were $10.05{\sim}13.59,\;9.49{\sim}12.69,\;9.50{\sim}16.48\;and\;5.01{\sim}5.44g\;H_2O/g$ dry solids for zucchini slice, sweet potato stem, taro stem, and platycodon, respectively. And these values were found to be very compatible with the values of the critical moisture content. Consequently, it was found that the moisture of these vegetables should be removed below the BET monolayer moisture content or below the critical moisture content for the long term storage.

  • Gelatinization properties of heat-moisture treated Olchal(japonica) and Hankangchalbyeo(j x indica) waxy rice starches were compared. The blue value, light transmittance of starch suspension and viscosity in sodium hydroxide solution were similar between two starches. Olchal starch showed lower water binding capacity, swelling power md peak viscosity by amylograph than Hankangchalbyeo starch. Upon heat-moisture treatments all above parameters were decreased. The critical sodium hydroxide concentration for gelatinization was increased by treatments. The initial pasting temperature of Olchal starch was higher than that of Hankarlgchalbyeo. All amylograph reference points increased by the treatments, except the maximum viscosity or 2l% moisture-treated Olchal starch. Starches treated at 18% moisture level showd the highest value of consistency index. The activation energy of consistency index for gelatinized Olchal starch was lower than that for Hankangchalbyeo starch. The heat-moisture treatments had no effect on activation energy.

  • The dielectric constants of fluorine-containing epoxy resins, 2-diglycidylether of benzotrifluoride(FER)/4,4'-diamino-diphenyl methane (DDM) and diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)/DDM systems were evaluated by dielectric spectrometer. Glass transition temperature and thermal stability factors, including initial decomposed temperature, temperatures of maximum rate of degradation, and decomposition activation energy of the cured specimens were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. For the mechanical properties of the casting specimens, the fracture toughness, flexural, and impact tests were performed, and their fractured surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscope. The dielectric constant of FER/DDM system was lower than that of commercial DGEBA/DDM system, and the mechanical properties of the cured specimens showed higher values than those of DGEBA/DDM system. This was probably due to the introduction of trifluoromethyl (CF$_3$) group into the side chain of the epoxy resins, resulting in improving the electric and mechanical properties of the epoxy cure system studied.

  • This paper focuses on the thermal deformation induced preload change in the tilting pad journal bearing, using a three-dimensional (3D) thermo-hydro-dynamic (THD) approach. Preload is considered as a critical factor in designing the tilting pad journal bearing. The initial preload measured under nil external load and nil thermal gradient is influenced by two factors, namely, the thermal deformation and elastic deformation. Thermal deformation is due to a temperature distribution in the bearing pads, whereas the elastic deformation is due to fluid forces acting on the pads. This study focuses on the changes induced in preload and film clearance due to thermal deformation. The generalized Reynolds equation is used to evaluate the force of the fluid and the 3D energy equation is used to calculate the temperature of the lubricant. The abovementioned equations are combined by establishing a relationship between viscosity and temperature. The heat transfer within the bearing pads, the lubricant, and the spinning journal is calculated using the heat flux boundary condition. The 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) is used in modeling the (1) heat conduction in the spinning journal and bearing pads, (2) thermal gradient induced thermal distortion of the spinning journal and pads, and (3) viscous shearing, and heat conduction and convection in a thin film. This evaluation method has an increased fidelity, and it can prove to be a cost-effective tool that can be used by designers to predict the dynamic behavior of a bearing.

  • US national research laboratories developed the first Vital Area Identification (VAI) method for the physical protection of nuclear power plants that is based on Event Tree Analysis (ETA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) techniques in 1970s. Then, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute proposed advanced VAI method that takes advantage of fire and flooding Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) results. In this study, in order to minimize the burden and difficulty of VAI, (1) a set of streamlined VAI rules were developed, and (2) this set of rules was applied to PSA fault tree and event tree at the initial stage of VAI process. This new rule-based VAI method is explained, and its efficiency and correctness are demonstrated throughout this paper. This new rule-based VAI method drastically reduces problem size by (1) performing PSA event tree simplification by applying VAI rules to the PSA event tree, (2) calculating preliminary prevention sets with event tree headings, (3) converting the shortest preliminary prevention set into a sabotage fault tree, and (4) performing usual VAI procedure. Since this new rule-based VAI method drastically reduces VAI problem size, it provides very quick and economical VAI procedure. In spite of an extremely reduced sabotage fault tree, this method generates identical vital areas to those by traditional VAI method. It is strongly recommended that this new rule-based VAI method be applied to the physical protection of nuclear power plants and other complex safety-critical systems such as chemical and military systems.

  • A nonlinear sloshing problem is numerically simulated. During excessive sloshing the sloshinginduced impact load can cause a critical damage on the tank structure. A three-dimensional free-surface flow in a tank is formulated in the scope of potential flow theory. The exact nonlinear free-surface condition is satisfied numerically. A finite-element method based on Hamiltons principle is employed as a numerical scheme. The problem is treated as an initial-value problem. The computations are made through an iterative method at each time step. The hydrodynamic loading on the pillar in the tank is computed.
