This paper focuses on techniques of improving refinery reliability, availability, and profitability. Our team developed a corrosion control document(CCD) for processing of the crude distillation unit(CDU). Recent study shows the loss due to corrosion in US is around $276 billion. It's a big concern for both managers and engineers of refinery industry. The CCD consists of numerous parts namely damage mechanism(DM), design data, critical reliability variable(CRV), guidelines, etc. The first step in the development of CCD is to build material selection diagram(MSD). Damage mechanisms affecting equipments and process need to be chosen carefully based on API 571. The selected nine DM from API 571 are (1) creep/stress rupture, (2) fuel ash corrosion, (3) oxidation, (4) high temperature sulfidation, (5) naphthenic acid corrosion, (6) hydrochloric acid(HCL) corrosion, (7) ammonium chloride(salt) corrosion, (8) wet $H_2S$ corrosion, and (9) ammonia stress corrosion cracking. Each DM related to corrosion of CDU process was selected by design data, P&ID, PFD, corrosion loop, flow of process, equipment's history, and experience. Operating variables affecting severity of DM are selected in initial stage of CRV. We propose the guidelines for reliability of equipments based on CRV. The CCD has been developed on the basis of the corrosion control in refinery industry. It also improves the safety of refinery process and reduces the cost of corrosion greatly.
Cavitation corrosion in many industrial plants has recently become a serious issue. Cavitation corrosion has generally been investigated using a vibratory method based on ASTM G32 standard, and the test can be divided into direct cavitation and indirect cavitation. Cavitation corrosion test uses the vibration frequency of the horn of 20 kHz with constant peak-to-peak displacement amplitude. In this work, the peak-to-peak amplitude was controlled from 15 ㎛ to 85 ㎛, and electrochemical measurements were obtained during indirect cavitation. The relationship between cavitation corrosion rate and electrochemical properties was discussed. Corrosion steps of carbon steel at the initial stage under cavitation condition in 3.5 % NaCl can be proposed. When the cavitation strength is relatively low, corrosion of the steel is more affected by the electrochemical process than by the mechanical process; but when the cavitation strength is relatively high, corrosion of the steel is affected more by the mechanical process than by the electrochemical process. This work confirmed that the critical ultrasonic amplitude of 0.42 %C carbon steel is 53.8 ㎛, and when the amplitude is less than 53.8 ㎛, the corrosion effect during the cavitation corrosion process is higher than the mechanical effect.

Experiments were carried out to measure variations in the oxidation potential and current density using the polarization curves of polycarbonate. The results were then examined to identify the influences affecting the oxidation potential related to various conditions, such as temperature, pH, and oxydase(citrate and lipase). The lines representing the active anodic and cathodic dissolution shifted only slightly in the potential direction relative to temperature, pH, and the effect of the enzyme. The Tafel slope for the anodic and cathodic dissolution was determined such that the reversibility polarization was indicated as being effected by various conditions. The slope of the polarization curves describing the active-to-passive transition region shifted noticeably in their direction. Also, by varying the conditions, the optimum conditions for the most ready transform were identified, including temperature, pH, oxidation rate, and resistance of oxidation potential. The critical oxidation sensitivity(I(sub)r/I(sub)f) of the anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density was also determined, which is used in measuring the critical corrosion sensitivity of a polycarbonate.

Although stainless steels have the excellent corrosion resistance by passive film, they are susceptible to pitting corrosion in the environment containing halogen elements such as chloride ions. The resistance to pitting corrosion can be evaluated by measuring the critical pitting temperature (CPT). CPT values can be obtained using immersion, potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization test methods. Results on duplex 2205 stainless steels showed that CPT values were measured as $50^{\circ}C,\;55^{\circ}C\;and\;61^{\circ}C$, respectively for immersion, potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization test methods, depending upon the different test methods, even though the difference between CPT values are not much.
Corrosion products of reinforcement in concrete induce pressure to the adjacent concrete due to the expansion of steel. This expansion causes tensile stresses around the reinforcing bar and eventually induces cracking through the concrete cover The cracking of concrete cover will adversely affect the safety as well as the service life of concrete structures. The purpose of the this study is to examine the critical corrosion amount which causes the cracking of concrete cover. To this end, a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study has been conducted. Major test variables include concrete strength and cover thickness. The strains at the surface of concrete cover have been measured according to the amount of steel corrosion. The corrosion products which penetrate into the pores and cracks around the steel bar have been considered in the calculation of expansive pressure due to steel corrosion. The present study indicates that the critical amount of corrosion, which causes the initiation of cracking, increases with an increase of compressive strength. A realistic relation between the expansive pressure and average strain of corrosion product layer in the corrosion region has been derived and the representative stiffness of corrosion layer was determined. A concept of pressure-free strain of corrosion product layer was introduced to explain the relation between the expansive pressure and corrosion strain. The proposed theory agrees well with experimental data and may be a good base for the realistic durability design of concrete structures.

The corrosion of steel reinforcements in concrete is of much concern in recent years. The mechanism of corrosion, however, is not clear yet. This study is focused on the corrosion of steel induced by internal chlorides in concrete at early ages. To examine the critical concentration of steel, half-cell potential, chemical composition of expressed pore solutions of mortars and rate of corrosion area were observed with respect to additions of chlorides, types of binders, water-binders ratio.
The typical corrosion prevention method inside the steel upper box girder in a suspension bridge involves the use of paints. However, in an effort to reduce environmental impact and cost, the suspension portion of the Yeongjong Bridge, Korea utilizes dehumidification systems to control humidity and prevent corrosion inside its box girder. Maintaining a uniform humidity distribution at the proper level inside the box girder is critical to the successful corrosion control. In this study, the humidity and the resultant atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder of the Yeongjong Bridge was monitored. The corrosion rate of the steel inside the box girder was obtained using thin-film electrical resistance (TFER) corrosion sensors. Time-of-wetness (TOW) measurements and the deposition rates of atmospheric pollutants such as $Cl^{-}$ and $SO_{x}$ were also obtained. Classification of the atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder was evaluated according to ISO 9223. As a result, no corrosion was found in the upper box girder, indicating that the dehumidification system used in the Yeongjong Bridge is an effective corrosion control method.
The resistance to corrosion of additive manufactured (3D printing) Ti-6Al-4V alloys was investigated using micro-electrochemical tests. In terms of corrosion resistance, the acicular martensitic ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase in such additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V was the focus of attention, and its behavior was distinct from that of conventional subtractive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V. To order to identify ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase, XRD tests were performed and micro Vickers hardness was measured for different grains (bright and dark grains) in the additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Micro-electrochemical tests were performed to measure corrosion resistance of bright and dark grains in the additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy with specially designed electrochemical micro-droplet cell. Critical pitting temperature (CPT) measurement was performed to evaluate the resistance to pitting corrosion of additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloys with different volumes of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase and subtractive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The dark grains of the laminated Ti-6Al-4V alloy distributed broader than the bright grains measured with low microhardness. The dark grains of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, which was rich in martensite ${\alpha}^{\prime}$, had lower general corrosion and pitting resistance than bright grains. As the fraction of martensite ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase increased, the resistance to the pitting corrosion decreased.
This paper reports the studies on the wear-corrosion behavior of ductile cast iron in the acidic environment. In atmosphere and variety of pH solution, specific wear rate and wear-corrosion characteristics of GCD 60 with various sliding speed and distance were investigated. And electrochemical polarization test of GCD 60 was examined in the environment of various pH values. The main results are as following : As the contact pressure increases, the critical velocity of specific wear rate becomes transient at low sliding speed. As pH value becomes low, wear-corrosion loss increases in the aqueous solution. As the corrosion environment is acidified, corrosion potential of GCD 60 becomes noble and corrosion current density increases.

Recently, due to the increasing of interest about the eco-friendly concrete, it is being increased to use concretes containing by-products of industry such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, and etc. Especially, these are well known for improving the resistance to reinforcement corrosion in concrete and decreasing chloride ion penetration. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance to corrosion of reinforcement and critical chloride content of high volume fly ash concrete(HVFAC) which is replaced with fly ash for approximately 50% cement content. For this purpose, corrosion monitoring of reinforcement by half cell potential method was carried out for the cylindrical test specimens that the upper of reinforcement in concrete was exposed to detect the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement. It was observed from the test result that the the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement of HVFAC by the accelerated corrosion tests increased 1.2~1.3 times than plain concrete and the critical chloride contents of plain concrete and HVFAC were found to range $0.80{\sim}1.20kg/m^3$, $0.89{\sim}1.60kg/m^3$, respectively.
