  • Fossil power plants operated in high temperature condition are composed of components such as turbine, boiler, and piping system. Among these components, turbine blades made with 12%Cr steel operate at a temperature above $500^{\circ}C$. Due to the long term service, turbine blades experience material degradation manifested by change in mechanical and microstructural properties. The need to make life assessment and to evaluate material degradation of turbine blade is strongly required but in reality, there is a lack of knowledge in defining failure mechanism and fundamental data for this component. Therefore, in making life assessment of turbine blade, evaluation of material degradation must be a priority. For this purpose, evaluation of toughness degradation is very important. The major cause of toughness degradation in 12Cr turbine blade is reported to be critical corrosion pitting induced by segregation of impurity elements(P etc.), coarsening of carbide, and corrosion, but the of materials for in-service application. In this study, the purpose of research is focused on evaluating toughness degradation with respect to operation time for 12%Cr steel turbine blade under high temperature steam environment and quantitatively detecting the degradation properties which is the cause of toughness degradation by means of non-destructive method, electrochemical polarization.

  • A failure analysis of holddown spring screw was performed using fracture mechanics approach. The spring screw was designed such that it was capable of sustaining the loads imposed by the initial tensile preload and operational loads. In order to investigate the cause of failure, a stress analysis of the top nozzle spring assembly was done using finite element analysis and a life prediction of the screw was made using a fracture mechanics approach. The elastic-plastic finite element analysis showed that the local stresses at the critical regions of head-shank fillet and thread root significantly exceeded than the yield strength of the screw material, resulting in local plastic deformation. Primary water stress corrosion cracking life of the Inconel 600 screw was predicted by using integration of the Scott model and resulted in 1.42 years, which was fairly close to the actual service life of the holddown spring screw.

  • CMP(chemical mechanical polishing) process has been attracted as an essential technology of multi-level interconnection. Also CMP process got into key process for global planarization in the chip manufacturing process. In this study, potentiodynamic polarization was carried out to investigate the influences of $H_2O_2$ concentration and metal oxide formation through the passivation on tungsten and titanium. Fortunately, the electrochemical behaviors of tungsten and titanium are similar, an one may expect. As an experimental result, electrochemical corrosion of the $5\;vol\%\;H_2O_2$ concentration of tungsten and titanium films was higher than the other concentrations. According to the analysis, the oxidation state and microstructure of surface layer were strongly influenced by different oxidizer concentration. Moreover, the oxidation kinetics and resulting chemical state of oxide layer played critical roles in determining the overall CMP performance. Therefore, we conclude that the CMP characteristics tungsten and titanium metal layer including surface roughness were strongly dependent on the amounts of hydrogen peroxide oxidizer.

자동차 강재의 수소취성 연구에 대한 고찰 (A Study on Hydrogen Embrittlement Research on Automotive Steel Sheets)

  • In order to suppress $CO_2$ emission and protect passengers in case of vehicle collision, continuous efforts are being made to increase the application ratio and tensile strength of advanced high strength steels used in the manufacturing of automotive body. Simultaneously, hydrogen embrittlement which was not a concern in the past has currently become a major issue due to microstructure that is sensitive to hydrogen uptake. The sensitivity increases with residual stress and hydrogen uptake content. Many automotive OEM companies and mill makers are setting specifications to control hydrogen embrittlement. The factors which lead to hydrogen embrittlement are material sensitivity, residual stress, and hydrogen concentration; researches are in progress to develop countermeasures. To reduce material sensitivity, mill makers add high energy trap elements or microstructure refinement elements. Automotive OEM companies design the car parts not to concentrate local stress. And they manage the levels to not to exceed critical hydrogen concentration. In this article, we have reviewed hydrogen embrittlement evaluation methods and corresponding solutions that are being studied in automobile manufacturing industries and mill makers.

가돌리늄 첨가에 따른 2205 듀플렉스 스테인레스 강의 기계적 및 부식 특성 변화 (Influence of Gadolinium Addition on Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel)

  • This study reports the influence of gadolinium (Gd) addition on mechanical and corrosion properties of 2205 duplex stainless steel. In all alloys produced, regardless of the initial Gd content, Gd-based inclusions were well distributed in the duplex stainless steel matrix. As the Gd content increased from 0 wt% to 0.19 wt%, the ultimate tensile strength and hardness of the alloy increased from 630 MPa to 977 MPa and from 57 to 61, respectively, while elastic modulus, tensile elongation and impact energy of the alloy decreased. The critical crevice temperatures of Alloy1, Alloy2 and Alloy3 were $20^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, respectively.

Challenges in the Production of Thin Coatings at High Line Speed

  • Cost reduction of products is and will always be a key objective of industrials. However, it is well identified that the wiping process reaches its limits at high line speed in general and especially thin coatings. If wiping models predict that it is possible to reach 32-37 g/$m^2$ of pure Zinc at 180 m/min provided the nozzle to strip distance can be reduced to 6mm, the possibility to reach that process window industrially with sufficient robustness is debated. 3 key problems are reviewed and analyzed: Zinc splashing and liquid drop emissions of various forms, the production of skimming and the noise generated by the nozzles. The available data and models are firstly used to predict phenomena. Secondly, videos and pictures from the lines showing what really happens on the edges especially in case of a strip width change are analyzed. Whereas the predicted level of skimming to remove from the pot is expected very high, it turns out that the target may be very close to the full splashing phenomena and that the most critical industrial situation is related to strip specification changes. It is then expected that the industrial feasibility of the 32-37 g/$m^2$ at 180 m/min will depend strongly on the amount of incoming strip with the same width that can be processed continuously.

Strength estimation for FRP wrapped reinforced concrete columns

  • Fiber-Reinforced Plastics (FRP) have received significant attention for use in civil infrastructure due to their unique properties, such as the high strength-to-weight ratio and stiffness-to-weight ratio, corrosion and fatigue resistance, and tailorability. It is well known that FRP wraps increase the load-carrying capacity and the ductility of reinforced concrete columns. A number of researchers have explored their use for seismic components. The application of concern in the present research is on the use of FRP for corrosion protection of reinforced concrete columns, which is very important in cold-weather and coastal regions. More specifically, this work is intended to give practicing engineers with a more practical procedure for estimating the strength of a deficient column rehabilitated using FRP wrapped columns than those currently available. To achieve this goal, a stress-strain model for FRP wrapped concrete is proposed, which is subsequently used in the development of the moment-curvature relations for FRP wrapped reinforced concrete column sections. A comparison of the proposed stress-strain model to the test results shows good agreement. It has also been found that based on the moment-curvature relations, the balanced moment is no longer a critical moment in the interaction diagram. Besides, the enhancement in the loading capacity in terms of the interaction diagram due to the confinement provided by FRP wraps is also confirmed in this work.

Estimation of residual stress in welding of dissimilar metals at nuclear power plants using cascaded support vector regression

  • Residual stress is a critical element in determining the integrity of parts and the lifetime of welded structures. It is necessary to estimate the residual stress of a welding zone because residual stress is a major reason for the generation of primary water stress corrosion cracking in nuclear power plants. That is, it is necessary to estimate the distribution of the residual stress in welding of dissimilar metals under manifold welding conditions. In this study, a cascaded support vector regression (CSVR) model was presented to estimate the residual stress of a welding zone. The CSVR model was serially and consecutively structured in terms of SVR modules. Using numerical data obtained from finite element analysis by a subtractive clustering method, learning data that explained the characteristic behavior of the residual stress of a welding zone were selected to optimize the proposed model. The results suggest that the CSVR model yielded a better estimation performance when compared with a classic SVR model.

회전코일 와전류신호를 이용한 증기발생기 곡관형 튜브의 축방향노치 신호의 특성 (Characteristics of Eddy Current Signals of Axial Notches in Steam Generator U-bend Tubes using Rotating Pancake Coils)

  • Steam generator tubes are critical boundary of the primary and secondary side in nuclear power plants. Eddy current testing is commonly used as the method of non-destructive testing for the safety and integrity of steam generator tubes in the nuclear power plants. Changes in the geometric shape act as a stress concentration factor likely to cause a defect during the steam generator operation. The mixed-signals with the geometric shape are distorted and attributes that are difficult to detect signals. An example is bending stress due to compression process at a U-bend occurring in the intrados region which has a small radius of curvature. The resulting change in the geometric shape may lead to a dent like occurrences. The dent can cause stress concentration and generates stress corrosion cracks. In this study, the steam generator tubes of nuclear power plant were selected to study for analysis of mixed-signal containing dent and stress corrosion cracks.

Simulation of oxygen mass transfer in fuel assemblies under flowing lead-bismuth eutectic

  • Corrosion of structural materials presents a critical challenge in the use of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as a nuclear coolant in an accelerator-driven system. By forming a protective layer on the steel surfaces, corrosion of steels in LBE cooled reactors can be mitigated. The amount of oxygen concentration required to create a continuous and stable oxide layer on steel surfaces is related to the oxidation process. So far, there is no oxidation experiment in fuel assemblies (FA), let alone specific oxidation detail information. This information can be, however, obtained by numerical simulation. In the present study, a new coupling method is developed to implement a coupling between the oxygen mass transfer model and the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. The coupling approach is verified. Using the coupling tool, we study the oxidation process of the FA and investigate the effects of different inlet parameters, such as temperature, flow rate on the mass transfer process.
