  • The purpose of this study is to examine the spatial characteristics of violent and burglary crimes in South Korea. Violent crimes and burglary crimes depend on a spatial setting with good conditions for their criminal purposes. This study defines population density, racial heterogeneity, types of houses, and density of commercial facilities as variables of place affecting crime in cities and counties. The study collects data from 229 cities in Korea to analyze the effect of spatial characteristics on crime. We conduct additional analyses to meet the statistical requisites of the spatial econometrics model using the open-source software R and GeoDa 1.12.1.129. From the analytical result, population density, racial heterogeneity, apartments, and commercial areas relate to crime occurrence. We suggest the implication of the theoretical and practical contributions to the relationship between place and crime.

  • This study tries to find the possibility to prevent crime by improving urban spatial environment through the analysis of spatial environment property that mutually coincides or differs by comparing the place where crime actually occurs and the place where citizen is afraid of crime. The method of study is as follows. First, the ontents scope and method of study was established by theoretic investigation of case study related to crime. Second, as crime cannot be prevented by police power only, CPSCP(Citizen Participation System for Crime Prevention) was developed so that all citizen can cooperatively participate in the crime prevention anytime and anywhere. Third, the data on the place where people feel fear in the region was collected by directly indicating the place where citizen is afraid of crime in the space by utilizing CPSCP. Fourth, the place where crime actually occurs and the place where citizen is afraid of crime are redundantly analyzed for comparative analysis of 2 places. The result shows that environmental design improving physical environment of urban space is necessary to prevent crime and to eliminate the fear of crime. The CPSCP developed by this study which will be advanced to U-crime prevention system will contribute to making citizen's own neighborhood a smart safety city autonomously.

  • This paper aims to analyze fear of crime which is considered socio-psychologically important in our daily lives from a geographical point of view. Especially, the spatial patterns of the fear of crime which were analyzed in the area of Youngtong in Suwon city. First, this paper takes a look at the correlation between the incidence of crime and the fear of crime. Most people feel fear in actual crime scenes, but they do not always coincide with place where people feel the high level of fear. Fear of crime is closely connected with physical environments as well as the incidence of crime. The level of fear is high in places where the light is dark, unfrequented paths, especially in parks and around mountains. Several factors which have effects on fear of crime operate differently upon place. Second, a survey which measures the fear of crime was quantitatively analyzed. Factor analysis was employed to find out whether questions are appropriate for measuring the fear of crime as well as to reduce the amount of data so that more exact result can be derived from the data. Through the factor analysis, seven factors were extracted and it is found that a factor of incivility accounts for 24.032% of variance. Other factors which affect fear of crime are community cohesion, warning, incidence of crime, victimization, morality and authority.

  • Social unrest from retaliatory crimes is increasingly becoming problematic. Recently, there was an accident involving a suspect who went to a hospital and committed acts of retaliatory violence 11 times. This person's reasoning was that he was imprisoned due to the hospital's reporting to the police. He was consequently arrested in Boeun Choongbook on December 27th 2014. Accidents like this one take place frequently around our surroundings. There are regulations and systems in place. Nevertheless, similar cases that continue to take place makes us wonder if criminal judicial systems work well. Lukewarm responses to retaliatory crimes is not only threatening social security, but also placing fears in the minds of ordinary citizens. If retaliatory crimes take place, most citizens become apprehensive about criminal judicial activities of the police and mistrust for criminal judicial system. This at times discourages people from reporting incidents and could eventually increase crime rate and cause various social problems. Even though there are legal and systemic control measures, retaliatory crime is an increasing trend. This study is going to examine tendencies of internal retaliatory crimes and discuss legal-systemical responses.

  • In modern society, there has been an increase in needs to protect the life and property of the people, because the number of various crimes is on the increase due to the sudden and complicated changes of the urban environment. For the needs, security persons in the urban area are expanding the role and skill of police for more effective crime prevention and surveillance, although the number of policeman/woman is insufficient and their tasks are hard. Recently, a system to observe and prevent crime in effective has been introduced by using such an artificial surveillance device as CCTV to monitor focusing on one area for 24 hours. However, the system brings such problems as the insufficiency of systematic criteria to install surveillance device and the invasion of privacy. Therefore, in this study, artificial surveillance zones to monitor crimes are selected by applying spatial features between artificial surveillance devices including CCTV and crime occurrence place, and using GIS spatial analysis techniques. As a result of selecting, it's found that the number of CCTV is absolutely insufficient and spatial distribution is not fully considered in the existing location of installed CCTV.
